2-Day Tour to Meteora from Athens

Athens, Greece

Don't miss the chance to see the amazing cliff-top monasteries of Meteora. This two-day tour takes you across the scenic Plain of Thessaly to Kalambaka and one of the most important groups of Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece. The monasteries are perched on top of towers of sandstone, which for centuries provided totally inaccessible retreats for the monks.

Your overnight tour to Meteora takes you through Levadia and Arachova to Delphi, where you have a 1.5-hour stop. After a drive through the central towns of Amphissa, Lamia and Trikala, crossing the Thessalian plain, you'll spend the night in Kalambaka.

Next morning you'll take a tour of the cliff-top monasteries, built on top of rock towers and providing fantastic views over the plain. Meteora is considered one of the most beautiful area of mainland Greece, and its monasteries are one of the country's most unique attractions.

Meteora is majestic! The trip back into Athens was miserable though because of the traffic jam.

i was disappointed that we could visit only 2 of the monasteries. Was hoping that we could at least visit 3 out of the 6. If due to time constraint, we should be visiting the Great Meteora instead.

Delphi just fantastic but be aware you need to pack some lunch as there is no time for it before the travel to Meteora. Great hotel with good meals. Our guide was very informative. BUT.....the bus was a nightmare. Airconditioning broke down first day. It was supposedly fixed. Our return trip to Athens took over 8 hours as the bus lost power and could only do 50km/h on the freeway. An extremely long trip back. Perhaps an alternative bus could have been sent ?? Other than that an amazing 2 days.

The first day to Delphi was very disappointing. Spent more time making 3 bus and guide changes, too much time at break stops en route. Guide was very average and not much guided through Delphi site. Then, we found out that the Museum, one of best in world for Greek architecture wasn't even included! Hadn't thought to ask specifically when booking. However, Meteora portion, with excellent different guide and hotel the 2nd day were very good. Apparently the 3-day trip with Mycenae and the Meteora guide also for Delphi would have been fine.

A long bus ride to and from Athens but that is to be expected. Good guides for both the Delphi and Meteora parts of the tour. Considering that the hotel and dinner and breakfast are included it's good value for money. Nice pool at the hotel. Food was decent.

The trip was good but we were very rushed at Delphi as we only got the tour of the ruins no museum tour or look at the town so we could have kunch . we were rushed off onto another bus and straight on the meteroa. that part was very disappointing. So if this is how rushed the two day two is then i recommend the 3 day. The meteroa part was fabulous would recommmend this . good day out. the guide was very knowledable.

This tour is a great way to see both Meteora and Delphi. Initially, my husband and I were wondering if it was worth all of the driving (you spend a lot of time on the bus) but once we got to Meteora, we agreed it was. There were two disappointing aspects:

We really enjoyed the trip which also included a stop at Delphi, the Temple of Apollo. We had 2 tour guides. The first took us through the Delphi site, and then we continued with a second guide to Meteora. Both were very informative, and we especially enjoyed Janus who took the group to Meteora. He had a great sense of humor, as well as a lot of great detail on the monasteries. The logistics of transferring between these 2 groups were handled very well. Our overnight accommodation and meals were also nice. We chose the 1st class hotel which was comparably priced with the 2nd class accommodations with other tour companies. This included a nice pool and 2 great meals._br/_ We went with our teenage daughter and we had some initial doubts as to whether the overall tour group would work for her. But, there were quite a few families, also with teenagers, and we found the group to be a lot of fun. Also, by contacting Viator directly, you can get a triple room, which is less costly.

This is one of the highlights of my trip!!! Until you actually see the monasteries, it's hard to imagine how they were built. Our guide was wonderful and offered a succinct explanation of the things we saw in the monastery. One should definitely take this trip.

Both Delphi and Meteora was amazing although little bit upset with the tour guide for Delphi. I'm really glad I did Delphi twice since the second time we spent more time there. We didnt get to see the bottom part of Delphi and only were given an hour to see site with the guide. Again comparing the two tours, I think it was just that the tour guide for my other tour was better. Still this tour had great accommodation and the guide for meteora was really good aswell.

Expected more time in Delphi and Meteora. We only saw two monasteries...at least 3 or 4.... Since its a two day tour, it should be explained about the limitations. The stay in the hotel was nice. The dinner was very good.

Meteora is AMAZING! This is a MUST DO! the bus trip is lengthy however it is definitely worth the trip. The tour guide was very friendly and informative. The accomodation overnight was suitable. The visit to Delphi along the way was brilliant. It was really good that the bus did stop regularly to break up the length of the trip.

Meteora was amazing and beautiful. Tour was great, and our guide was wonderful too._br/_ The hotel we stayed at in Kalambaka was very nice and had a wonderful dinner buffet included. It was nice to see the Greek country side on our trip from Athens. Enjoyed this trip very much. This was the first time I used Viator and was very pleased with the ease of booking on line and the service provided. Will use Viator again.

This was a great tour. We got a solid visit at Delphi. I did not stick with the guide, but explored the site on my own, though, or I would have only seen half of it. The museum is not included for folks going to Meteora, so in that sense the visit was rushed, but that was expected. We also stopped at Thermopolis, famous for the Spartan 300 battle vs the Persians.

wonderful tour of what I feel are the the two most incredible sites in mainlnd Greece. Very interesting commentary by our extremely knowledgeable guides. I would recommend people bring a snack for the ride from Delphi, as the lunch stop is around 2pm. Also, if you want to visit more than 2 monastaries, you will want tp pick a different tour,

The tour was well arranged by Chat tours who are very reliable and keep to their commitments. Remembered pick up although booking was done online some time ago. The guides were very knowledgable and informative and the drivers are good driving up the mountainous terrain. Also good buses, time management and hotels. Enjoyed the Trip and would recommend it to other tourists.

The sites of Delphi and Meteora were really great but guide at Delphi didn't leave any free time for us to explore the site on our own. We were also transferred to another tour after Delphi and when we came to join the tour, we were told that there was no time to have lunch and it was nearly 2pm with another 4 hour bus journey ahead of us. In the end, we were able to grab a snack but the tour nearly left without us and the bus was starting up as we left. Didn't help that we couldn't recognise the others on the tour at the time. Time needs to be better planned in future. Would have preferred some free time to explore the site at Delphi cause I don't feel like I've seen it properly.

Overall, a very good trip. Hotel was great. The guides were very informative. The one drawback was that there was no stop-over for lunch on the first day. To give the guide due credit, she did warn us about this. Most of the time is spent on the bus but that is expected in such trips. Even though you may have paid for the trip earlier, plan to confirm with the tour agency at least 2 days prior to your trip (It is written in fine print in the ticket). The first day we visited Delphi (no museum included), Thermopyles. The second day we went to Meteora - beautiful views.

Overall this was a spectacular trip. As others have mentioned, the Delphi portion is too short and ours was made even shorter because we ran into a truck strike on the highway which delayed us by about 45 minutes. Definitely carry snacks! The only complaint about the Delphi portion of the trip was the guide, almost the entire bus trip she chatted with the driver and was annoyed and reluctant to answer questions outside her script. For instance, one of the passengers asked her what fruits Greece grew. She curtly responded she did not know and then mentioned 'maybe oranges'. However, later she mentioned that Greece grows watermelons, apples, oranges, cotton, tobacco and olives (of course). Why she did not mention this when asked earlier is a mystery. There were several such examples (and this is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5). The ruins at Delphi were amazing as was the view from there. The Amalia Hotel at Kalambaka was fine. Beautiful setting & nice balcony. (In month of September Viator offered first class hotel for tourist class price).Meteora was simply astounding. The guide (Dimitra - not the same as the Delphi guide) was a wealth of knowledge and more than willing to answer questions - answering questions even on obscure historical points! We visited one of the monastaries and a nunnery. The monastary had a lot of steps to climb but even the mobility challenged individual with us (knee problems) was able to climb to the top as there is a hand railing. She was so glad she did not miss out! The nunnery was easily accessible. Lunch on the way back at another Amalia Hotel was just ok and was served family style (not buffet). This trip is well worth it!

The is definitely a tour I would recommend to anyone wishing to fill a couple of days in Greece. Wonderful scenery both to and from Kalambaka, and we had a very informative and knowledgeable tour guide (for the monastery leg of the trip). I think from memory her name was Joy. The monasteries were a spectacular sight. Perched on the edge of cliffs which over Kalambaka. We visited 2 monasteries, only entering the chapels, you cannot wander through the actual monastery. One of these is now a Nunnery. I do need to add though that the experience did not start well for us, and we felt very annoyed by what occurred on the morning of our pick up from our Athens hotel. Our Viator paperwork advised we would be picked up at 8.30am from our hotel. At 7.40am we were sitting in the hotel restaurant having our breakfast when a local representative for the tour entered the room calling our name. She then proceeded to tell us we were late, we had to leave immediately. We told her this wasn’t the time on our paperwork and she blamed our hotel, we also told her we still had to check out of the hotel (they were storing our main luggage) and this would take a bit of time as we had to collect our bags from our room. She told us she had to leave and couldn’t wait for us! When we stood our ground she finally decided she could return but would only pick us up from a street corner up the road. When we were finally picked up, the bus then proceeded to collect other passengers from other hotels even going around the block 3 times at another hotel because someone else wasn’t ready. We left Athens at 9.30am! Very disappointing start. The second issue we had concerned lunch on the first day. After a 15min morning tea break at a roadside petrol station we headed to Delphi. From Delphi we were transferred to another bus which takes guests on to Meteora. We were not given any time to have lunch anywhere or even pick something up. We were told by our new tour guide Joy that unfortunately we would have to wait until they make their scheduled stop which would be around 4.30pm! This is far too long and something we should have been advised about at our morning tea stop so that we could purchase food to take for later, including water. It is a very long drive to Kalambaka. From Kalambaka back to Athens it took 6hrs and we didn’t have any traffic problems. If we didn’t have these 2 incidents I would definitely rate this experience higher.

The monasteries at Meteoria were amazing, but it was a long bus trip to and from Athens. The monasteries are so unique and the history of creaing these on top of rock columns makes for a very nice tour.

Great tour with beautiful views! Although many of the monasteries have cable cars going to them, you only go to two monasteries. The first you access by a bridge, but the second is accessed by 150 stairs which doesn't sound like a lot until you are walking up all of them. Even though we were told that men wearing shorts will not be allowed access to the monasteries there were still a dozen or so who were allowed inside while wearing shorts. However, women MUST wear a dressskirt, but they also provide them there is you don't have one or forgot. Also, the trek to the top of Delphi is a steep and slippery one. You should definitely wear sneakers!

I loved Meteora and our guide to that area did a marvelous job. I believe her name was Eva and she was gracious and knowledgeable. However, the first guide who was in charge of the Delphi part, was not so good. Her command of English was pretty bad and she didn't touch on basic things like if we could leave our things on the bus, etc. She got all of us pretty confused over who should go where at what time, as we had people on a one-day tour as well as our own, two-day tour. She failed to summarize the days activities well. All in all though, I would recommend your tour company.

The sights themselves were beautiful and really worth seeing. I recommend traveling to Meteora and Delphi, but I would suggest renting a car to do so at your own pace. The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and multilingual. The hotel in Meteora was adequate, if not a bit loud and busy due to large numbers of school kids. Dinner and breakfast were very nice, with a large variety of food. Be aware that if you have some of the wine that is offered with dinner, it will cost you 8 Euros. The tour, however, was poorly organized and there was very little information provided to guests regarding bus transfers and meals. We stopped at 1030am for a quick snack/bathroom break on day 1, went to Delphi, and then were taken to a hotel to await pickup by another bus. Because that tour had already stopped for lunch, we didn't stop again until after 4pm, which was our first opportunity to eat lunch. Had we not grabbed some snacks in the morning before we left, we would have been even more hungry than we were. Overall, if you enjoy bus tours, this one is worth doing. Just come prepared with snacks and drinks.

I would highly recommend seeing Meteora; however, the trip including Delphi has some problems. The time spent in Delphi is far too short and does not allow time to visit the museum and requires long hours on the bus. Also, after a morning tea stop at 1030am there were no stops for food or drink until a quarter to four in the afternoon - far too late for a lunch stop, and like myself fellow travellers by then were starving and thirsty, and many had headaches. The dinner and accommodation at Meteora were good but too far out of town. I think these two destinations, Delphi and Meteora, need to be split into two separate tours, or three days should be allowed to cover the journey

A fantastic 2 day tour which included comprehensive visits to both Delphi and Meteora 3 monasteries and nunneries. The guides were informative and interesting and the accommodation and meals excellent. Just an aside, if you can, make sure to bring your own lunch on Day 1 as there is a limited selection of sandwiches available at the rest stop.
