Mycenae and Epidaurus Day Trip from Athens

Athens, Greece

Explore the remains of the ancient city of Mycenae a major centre of Greek civilization from 1600BC to 1100BC and visit the small village of Epidaurus famous in ancient times for being a place of healing.

After taking a scenic drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf, you will come to the ancient city of Mycenae home to the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon. Visit the tomb of Agamemnon, the Palace and the Lionesses Gate.

Stop off at the picturesque town of Nauplia before arriving in Epidaurus. The world heritage listed city is reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo's son Asklepios, the healer and was the most celebrated healing center of the classical world. Epidaurus is probably most famous for its theatre, one of the best preserved classical Greek buildings and still used today due to its amazing acoustics.

Our group had an excellent guide who made our trip extremely enjoyable. The historic and archeological knowledge she shared with us added value to the entire trip. Look forward to another trip!

Our guide was very difficult to understand, which resulted in missing a lot of the (I'm sure) wonderful information he was sharing with us. Finally, about 1/2 way through, he began to ask us if we understood what he was saying. That was better, as he slowed down and spoke English more clearly. Shame to have lost the first half of the narration though.

Awesome side trip from Athens. My second time to Mycenae and absorbed even more. Epidaurus is miraculous. To think that that was buried for so long, and the acoustics are perfect. Loved it! Guide was terrific.

Well organized with a useful commentary. However, on all three tours the tour organisers reneged on the pickup at our hotel, Hotel Katerina, despite it being listed as one of the pickup points. They should be admonished for this failure to deliver.

Lucky we had a guide with some humour as this made the trip more enjoyable. Had to drop some passengers at Nauplio and think this would be a good place for a visit to be included,

The trip is rather expensive. It's better to go by train to Korinthus and rent a car there. Then there's also time to see the excavations of Epidaurus and the the town of Nafplion.

I am satisfied with the tour. It offers a balance between picturesque views of Peloponese and visit to the two historical sites. I strongly recommend it to all who would like to see something really ancient and beautiful. It felt like the real Greece.

Excellent door-to-door service, with a lovely greeter who addressed all questions with enthusiasm. The guide was wonderful and hearing Homer's stories with the correct greek pronunciations told in an entertaining way was a highlight too. The entire day was a fantastic memory. I do wish we had purchased an included lunch - it is a great deal for the price. Wonderful tour & program & guide!

The tour was a nice break from the throng of people in Athens. The tour guide was well informed about the sites and talked about them in three languages! And she gave us ample time to wander around. Lunch was a mixture of eating bad, cold, rubbery food in a nice, swanky hotel. No other option on where to eat lunch as it was the only place.

This was a wonderful experience. We would advise people to visit the National Archaeological Museum in Athens prior to taking this trip, to see the extraordinary grave finds from Mycenae. Our guide was both professional and very knowledgeable, entertaining us all day with her comments on the towns and the countryside we were seeing.

The itinerary is totally different than what Viator describes. I booked this toor because the Viator itinerary said we would stop in Nafplio for lunch, instead the operator did a drive of Nafplio and stoped the bus about 3 KM out of town. instead of having an hour in Nafplio we had 3 minutes from an old railroad yard outside of town. on a hazy day at 3KM away is not what I paid for. The whole reason I booked the tour was Nafplio. The tour guide totally blew me off when I asked her about why we weren't stopping. She tried to show me thet brochure and I told her that I've never seen the brochure and if I had, I would not have booked with them. Big disappointment!

Excellent tour. Lots of stops to important places in Greek history. We also got a bonus photo stop at the Corinth Canal which was not listed in the tour. Should visit the Athens Archeological Museum before or after the tour to get the full picture as the finds are displayed there.

A day well spent. The sites were impressive, the guide was informative, and the transportation was comfortable. The 'optional' lunch gave a choice between eating or not eating. The location was an isolated tour operator-owned or associated hotel on the road between Mycenae and Nauphlion.

I very much enjoyed the trip. The bus was clean and comfortable. The driver skilled and the guide very knowledgeable and interesting. Lots of walking, stairs and inclines. Worth the effort but could be hard on someone who has artificial joints and is not in at least moderate shape. If you are afraid of heights keep in mind the city is in the hills with narrow walkways and not always railings.

The tour guide tried to speak 3 different languages and it was very confusing. Because he was giving the tour in 3 languages it took him forever to explain anything and I think there was some information that was left out He had a very thick accent, which was difficult to understand. The trip was nice but if I was to book again I would have gone on the Cornith or Delphi trip instead. This was a very expensive trip and was my least favorite trip that I went on while I was in Europe. When I booked the trip it said that it was in English. It did not say any language of choice. I was disappointed in this trip and had better luck on other Viator tours.
