Auckland Discovery City Tour

Auckland, New Zealand

Take in all the highlights of Auckland on a half-day city tour. See the yachts bobbing in the harbor, heritage listed buildings and parkland that offer stunning panoramic views over the city. Enjoy morning tea at the quaint village of Parnell, travel through Auckland Domain and cross the Harbor Bridge to the north shore. The city tour starts in the morning, leaving the afternoon free to relax or to combine with a visit to Kelly Tartan's, Underwater World or a cruise on the harbor

The tour begins with a short trip over the Harbour Bridge to the North Shore before returning to the central city to visit Queen St and the Auckland Viaduct.

Next we travel through the city's oldest park, the Auckland Domain, which is situated on a year old volcano. Stop in the quaint village of Parnell for morning tea stop and wander around the historic buildings many of which have been transformed into fashionable boutiques, antique, craft and specialty shops.

End your tour by taking the scenic waterfront route of Tamaki Drive to the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, in Mission Bay. Here you will see a memorial to the first Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand and the founder of the welfare state. The park has panoramic views over Whenua Rangatira, Auckland city and Waitemata Harbour and is great for photo opportunities.

This mornings tour is also available with the following options:

  • Entry to the Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World
Experience King and Gentoo Penguins then travel through the Underwater World and come face-to-face with giant stingrays and ferocious sharks!
  • Entry to the Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World and Devonport
Step under the city and into the sea with a visit to Kelly Tarlton's, then venture across Auckland's beautiful harbour and immerse yourself in Devonport's unique heritage, wide range of restaurants, cafes, beaches, art galleries and shopping.
  • Entry to the Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World and Fullers Harbour Cruise
Escape the city and cruise the sparkling waters of Auckland's beautiful harbour. Harbour highlights include historic Devonport, the harbour bridge and the NZ Naval base.

Exactly what you would expect for a Discovery City Tour. A perfect experience to see important elements of the city with enough history and background to either get good overview or whet interest for more!

The tour was very good and I would recomend it to any visitors. Last year we complained about a tour we did in Miami USA and got no response.

I totally enjoyed listening to the driver/tour guide - Peter was fantastic! I wish the trip to the island would be much longer as the boat ride was longer than the island stay (was just there to have a quick pee). Over-all I enjoyed it and would confidently recommend a 4.5 rating. Cheers!

This is the second time we have used Viator on a vacation and we would recommend the company for their tour selection and their performance. We had just disembarked a cruise ship in Auckland. We were surprised that the disembarkation included a city tour, so the city tour the next day was a bit redundant. The good news, however, was that I didn't have a camera as we left the ship. The Viator tour fixed that nicely. The highlights of the tour were stops to view the Harbor Bridge and a visit to Mt. Eden, a volcanic cone that overlooks the city. Weather cooperated, allowing excellent views on both days. The tour gives one an overall sense of the city. We were signed up for an option to descend under the water in a viewing tube to see the natural sea life, but elected to miss that so we'd have more time for lunch before our afternoon harbor cruise.

This was a fun activity. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but our tour guide was fantastic having an incredible amount of knowledge and jokes which compensated for the rainy day. Kelly Tarlton's was the best especially the penguins, so cute. This is the best and quickest way to get to know Auckland city.

If you don't have long in Auckland, this is a good way of seeing the main sights and hearing some local stories and information. I didn't enjoy Kelly Tarlton's as much as I was hoping to but may have been because I was sharing it with lots of screaming kids during their school holidays.

Be sure to go to Kelly Tarlton's. It's well worth it to see the penguins and sea life. It is fantastic what they did with the old, sewage tanks.
