Bangkok Temples Tour including reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country with around 95% of Thai's practicing the Theravada discipline of Buddhism. On this half-day guided tour you will visit three of the most famous wat's (the local name for temple) in Bangkok - Wat Traimit, Wat Pho and Wat Benchamabophit.

A Wat is a Buddhist building where both men and women can be ordained as monks or nuns.As you wander the streets of Bangkok it is not unusual to see monks walking along the road and it should come as no surprise as Thailand has over 26,000 Wat's.

Wat Traimit is also known as the temple of the Golden Buddha. The 3 meter tall statue is made from solid gold and weighs 5.5 tons and is a fine example of Sukhothai style art. You will then pass through Chinatown on your way to Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. At 46 meters in length and 15 meters high the Buddha is the largest in Bangkok and illustrates the passing of the Buddha into nirvana. Your last stop is at Wat Benchamabophit, or the marble temple. This magnificent monastery was built out of white Italian marble from Carrara in the late 19th century.

This was our first outing in Bangkok and gave us a bit of a feel for the city and it's energy. The Temples were great although we had to have one changed due the the protests that were occurring in Bangkok at the time. Well worth it.

Lovely morning spent visiting temples. Seeing the reclining Buddha was certainly the highlight for myself it is much bigger than expected. Only downside was i was back at my hotel by 10.30am would have liked to have spent longer looking around.

Really if you have a very short amount of time then I'd say do this. Otherwise take taxis and get to the locations yourself, it's easy enough to do just make sure to use metered taxis, tuk tuks will negotiate prices and almost always be much more expensive then a taxi. I traveled around Bangkok myself for 5 days. We got rushed through the temples and didn't have enough time at each location. We even got stuck in traffic for an hour and a half and by the time we got to the Marble Temple it was closed! I should have just stayed with the reclining Buddha instead of sitting in the bus in traffic.

Tour visited the main sites as described. However actual tour lasted only 2 hours due to logistics in getting tour members to meeting point. As a result tour was extremely rushed, with the seeming objective to get everyone to the Jewelery workshop as quickly as possible. Guide was knowledgeable but tour felt very rushed.
Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better
