Private Tour: Bangkok Temples including reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country with around 95% of Thai's practicing the Theravada discipline of Buddhism. As you wander the streets of Bangkok it is not unusual to see monks adorned in their maroon and yellow colors walking along the road and it should come as no surprise as Thailand has over 26,000 Wat's (the local name for temple).

On this privately guided half-day tour you will visit three of the most famous wat's in Bangkok - Wat Traimit, Wat Pho and Wat Benchamabophit. A Wat is a Buddhist building where both men and women can be ordained as monks or nuns.

Wat Traimit is also known as the temple of the Golden Buddha. The 3 meter tall statue is made from solid gold and weighs 5.5 tons and is a fine example of Sukhothai style art.

You will then pass through Chinatown on your way to Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. At 46 meters in length and 15 meters high the Buddha is the largest in Bangkok and illustrates the passing of the Buddha into nirvana.

Your last stop is at Wat Benchamabophit, or the marble temple. This magnificent monastery was built out of white Italian marble from Carrara in the late 19th century.

Once again, wonderful guide and very informative. Loved having the private tour so we could have time to wander around. I would always do a private tour as it can cater to our interests and if we wanted to spend more time in an area, we could.

The tour operator in Asia sent their best tour guide! I went on both Bangkok tours with him. The tour in general was very complete. The Reclining Buddha is a must see! I've been to mostly all Asia. The temples in Thailand are just special architecture-wise, and the people are kind.

This was a great tour because we got to set the pace, and it was not so rushed that we missed spending time at sites, but we were not held up by slow pokes, either. Our tour guide was marvelous!

The tour was well organised and informative. The guide was knowledgeable but needed prompting. We could not understand why, but she wouldn't come with us into the temples, except the last one, so once in we were left without much commentary. The wats were worth seeing. We didn't feel rushed, and the guide allowed sufficient time for photos.

We had a very good guide who allowed us enough time to really take in all the sights. We were never rushed, which makes it so much more enjoyable. Private tours are worth the little bit of difference in price.

A tour either private or public is a must in order to fully appreciate the temples, in this case 3 were visited. Guide was good. At the end we were dropped at a gem factory store not on the tour - shown a movie of gem making in Thailand. A bit of a tourist trap in a way and dropped back to our hotel with another group, instead of the private tour return. The tour is however, worth doing. Since the weather is so hot and humid do two separate tours. One of just the Grand Palace and the other of 2-3 other temples. You'll be glad you did!
