Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach Tour from Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Take an action-packed day trip from Paihia to the tip of New Zealand's North Island on a guided tour of Cape Reinga! The Waverider coach, built to traverse sand, will drive you down the rugged coastline of Ninety Mile Beach. You'll also see the mystical kauri trees, go sandboarding and dig for shellfish.

Explore one of the most amazing stretches of coastline in Oceana on a custom-built Waverider coach that keeps you comfortable as it moves effortlessly over sandy beaches, rugged roads and quicksand streams.

Start your New Zealand North Island adventure day trip with a stop at the Puketi Forest, home to 1,000-year-old kauri trees, some of the most ancient trees in the world. Walk along a ground-level boardwalk that meanders around the trunks of the trees and learn more about the area from the information panels located throughout the walk.

After you leave the Puketi Forest, you'll head to Houhora Harbour, where you can enjoy a tea break and an authentic Kiwi barbecue lunch at Houhora Game Fishing Club (tea and lunch not included). Later you will go to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand. You'll feel as though you're standing on the edge of the world as you watch the Pacific Ocean collide with the Tasman Sea.

Maori legend says that Cape Reinga is the departure point for spirits on their way to the Maori homeland in Hawaiki. There are no shops on Cape Reinga, and eating and drinking is frowned upon in order to show respect for this sacred Maori site. For an additional cost, you can aid New Zealand's conservation program by planting a native tree.

From Cape Reinga, your tour continues down the North Island's coast. Your first stop is the giant sand dunes at the Te Paki Quicksand Stream, where you can try your hand at sandboarding. Experience an exhilarating ride down the face of a dune on a boogie board!

Finally, get back on the Waverider coach and head south on Ninety Mile Beach. This strikingly beautiful stretch of unpopulated beach, is a marked contrast to the bustle of the island's East Coast, and you will have plenty of opportunities to stick your toes in the sand and help your guide dig for shellfish.

Your New Zealand North Island adventure ends with your return drive to Paihia.

All in all a good tour, but I would train drivers to provide more historical and environmental information instead of many personal stories and serve more local produce (different types of fish) and real coffee for lunch instead of fish in lots of batter with many cold salads and instant coffee.

A really enjoyable day out, with a friendly, informative guide. Loved Cape Reinga. And digging for shellfish on the beach (though the Tasman Sea is as cold as the North Sea!)

The trip itself was great. It would be good to know exactly what bus is picking you up though. I waited at the bus station for nearly an hour while various buses came and went - none of which were my bus.

An absolutely fantastic day trip. Whilst it is quite a long day and relatively early start, well worth it. The guide was extremely informative but not in an over-bearing way. The rainforest and beach were amazing. It was stunning to see the seas meet up by Cape Reinga and learn about Moari tradition. I would highly recommend the sand surfing, it's not as scary as it looks. The frequent convenience stops were good as was the food at those locations. Overall, a really varied and wonderful day, just be prepared for Sandfly (especially during summer months) - repellent at the ready!

This was o.k. More for older people, and the kauri forest we visited wasn't that impressive (though we heard of far more impressive ones from other travelers we met). The place we stop at for brekky and afternoon tea was also pretty average.

We found this an excellent, well organised trip. 11 hours sounded a long time but it never felt that long with regular stops. The Coach Driver was brilliant - gave so much useful information and was really friendly and helpful - and as for the drive down 90 mile beach - that was one of the many highlights of our holiday! The BBQ lunch we found very good.._br/_ Would definately recommend this as a great day out.

A very enjoyable day and a MUST DO if visiting Bay of Islands. The trip up the beach was absolutely stunning with wild horses running alongside the bus. We stopped on the beach then sand boarded down the dunes, which was amazing. Our tour guide Wally was very experienced and knowledgeable and his singing was exceptional and very memorable. One tiny disappointment was our barbeque lunch which was not really a meat feast or a barbeque, but was cooked in a kitchen.

The trip was excellent the only thing that mared it slights was the lunch (too early and poor quality food, supposed to be barbequed) and fact that I had to rearrange some passengers so that I could sit next to my wife. Sand boarding was a highlight, make sure you have plenty of water!

Our guide for the day was Craig he was awesome. Kept us well informed of events and the areas history throughout. We were picked up promptly from the hotel. We participated in the optional bbq and were not disappointed. I have no hestitation in recommending your company and should I visit the area in the future will be in touch.

Absolutely enjoyed the trip. Got some amazing photos and would recommend as a must do for both tourists and NZer's. Remember that song- "We Don't Know How Lucky We Are" That's what came to mind as we travelled.

Excellent tour guide and driver Barry - full of enthusiasm for the job he knew such a lot about the area and was able to elaborate on so much of Maori Culture and life. Barry even sang Maori greetings and farewells. A must do trip!

We had a really enjoyable trip. The only problem was lunch, which when booking we asked that 1 meal be non beef. When we arrived for lunch they had run out of fish meals and had to cook the fish up. It was no big deal as lunch was taken with all enjoying it.

A wonderful trip. Could have cut down the time by reducing the time at the stop on the way back to the same restaurant shop that we had been to in the morning. Overall, worth doing.

We were last pick up and sat in back of bus. Bus NOT designed for rear seat use. Driver could have rotated the seating to share the bad and the good. Or the folks at front should have paid MORE than those in the back.

It was with some trepidation that I booked this 11 hour bus trip as my husband is not a great lover of this type of trip, but we couldn't have been more pleased. Our driver made it very interesting and enjoyable for all, the stops were frequent enough to enable people to have a walk around, comfort stop etc., and the stops of interest were great, even if it was the busiest day of the year. I would, and have certainly recommended this trip to anyone interested in a holiday at the Bay of Islands.

Trip was excellent. Our driver was first class. We would have liked to stop at Doubtless Bay for our morning coffee instead of the large centre.
