Normandy Beaches Half-Day Trip from Bayeux

Bayeux, France

Pay tribute to the soldiers who fought at Omaha Beach on this afternoon tour of the Normandy beaches from Bayeux. You'll visit the famous battlefield sites of World War II and gain invaluable insights into the wartime experience of the soldiers who fought and died there. Your minivan holds a maximum of eight passengers, and a small group tour is the perfect way to get to out-of-the-way places in one day.

From Bayeux you'll drive to Pointe du Hoc, where the infamous German gun position threatened the Allied ships all the way to Utah and Omaha. The site was attacked by the elite 2nd U.S. Rangers, commanded by Lt. Col. James Rudder, who scaled the cliffs to get there. With its huge fortifications blown to pieces, the important site remains as it was when the Rangers left it and looks like a lunar landscape.

You'll then drive along the coast to Omaha Beach, where soldiers of the 29th and 1st Divisions landed, fought and died. This operation was the bloodiest of the five beaches and almost failed, but the bravery of those young men turned this operation into a victory. Overlooking the eastern end of Omaha Beach, the American cemetery holds the bodies of 9387 soldiers who came from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to liberate Western Europe from the Germans. You can see the graves of some of the 307 unknown soldiers or visit the resting places of the more famous, such as the family who inspired the film "Saving Private Ryan" or General Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

Your last stop for the day is the battery at Longues-sur-Mer. It was composed of four guns of 152 mm calibre, capable of firing shells to a maximum range of 15 miles, allowing them to reach not only Omaha Beach, 8 miles to the west, but also the British landing zone of Gold Beach, 5 miles to the east. The Allies had tried to knock out this battery with aerial bombardment leading up to the landings, but it was not until D-Day itself that the guns were finally silenced by the off-shore Allied Navies. The damage inflicted on the guns themselves can still clearly be seen today.

I am normally too cheap to pay for a guided tour, but this one was totally worth it. Our guide was a local who is studying history in university. He was extremely knowledgeable, and obviously interested in and passionate about Normandy. I am a history teacher, so I might have thought that I knew enough already, but our guide's insights made everything we saw much more meaningful. The van was comfortable, our group was full of interesting people, and the tour was great. We took a train from Paris - the two-hour trip was very comfortable and pleasant, and we made it up to Normandy and back in one day without ending up exhausted. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour.

Wonderful tour with a great guide. If you only have one day I highly recommend this trip. I left Paris on the 7am train and spent time in Medieval Bayeux, had lunch and pastries and picked up the tour at 1pm. Then took the 6:41pm train back to Paris.

This half day tour was one of the most moving days of my life. Our guide, Elise, was thoughtful, knowledgeable, and friendly. By the end of the day we felt like we were old friends. She helped us to understand the complexities of the invasion and guided us to a greater appreciation of the courage and sacrifices that were made for us.

Excellent , knowledgeable guide. TIme to experience and take it all in without being rushed.. Reality sunk in with a great sadness. So many young lives taken to "end all wars". I recommend this highly.

the outing was great, viator originally had us booked for Wednesday, when we showed up for the trip we found out it was overbooked and bumped us to the next day. Not too happy with viator but liked the trip fine.

The guide was exceptionally well versed in the aspects and difficulties of the Allied invasion and was very cognizant and respectful of the significance to Americans. It was good to see that the local inhabitants of all ages were continuing to honor the fallen with deep respect and acknowledgment for the price that was paid.

I had a terrific time during my half-day tour of the Normandy Beaches. Lucille was my tour guide and she was very knowledgeable, and very personable, and she made the tour very, very enjoyable for me and the rest of our little group. I visited London, Paris, Vienna, and Kiev during my vacation, but the favorite part of my trip was my tour of the Normandy Beaches. My father and 5 of my uncles were in WW2, so I wanted to see the famous D-Day invasion site. I took over 100 pictures during the tour. Lucille made the tour a success for me and I will remember it for the rest of my life. Please give my warmest regards to Lucille. Signed, Bruce Fritz (Denver, CO)

This was a fabulous tour - the tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and provided so much information about the landings that I never even knew about. I would recommend this tour to anyone - war buff or not. It's an amazing experience to be there and to imagine what it was like during the war.

Our tour was excellent. There were 6 of us in the van. This was a perfect number for a very personal tour and learning experience. The young man assigned to our tour (Gwen), was very informative. His commentary was spot-on... very educational and personal. He told us things we didn't think to ask, he answered all our questions, and showed us vintage 1940's pictures of the beaches and the landings. Thank you. Toula Oberlies, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

The tour guide was highly knowledgable and interesting and whent out of her way to get us on the tour. I wish I could remember her name. The tour was great, however when we arrived our name was not on the list and the guide had one more pickup to make. Said she would return for us if someone did not show up at that pickup. There was a no show and she returned for us. We had traveled from Paris that day for that tour.

I definitely recommend this tour. Our guide was Matthieu and he was very knowledgeable. As history enthusiasts, my husband and I both know quite a bit about WWII and D-Day. However Matthieu had really good supplemental info that enhance our understanding of the events and made the surroundings come alive. Even with the best guidebook, you're not going to get the insight. A half day is the right duration for the key sights for Americans. As a fun ending to our tour, based on the group's desire, Matthieu took us to a cider tasting at a local joint near the cemetery. It was fun and offered us an opportunity (but no obligation) to purchase the local brew. Overall, a winner.

Our tour guide very very sweet, but somewhat difficult to understand. Her job should be to really paint a picture of what went on during the invasion and she was just ok at doing that. The sites we saw for the half day tour were adequate.

Excellent tour. The guide was knowledgeable and fun and we had a great day. Only minor disappointment was that we could easily have spent more time at each of the stops. But on the other hand we did pack a lot of different stops in on the day.

Good way to see alot in a half day. Saw several beach landing areas, US cemetery and German gun placements. Small group made getting around very efficient. Many US visitors know alot about D-Day, but we still learned plenty of new info and saw sites you wouldn't stop to see on your own.

We were pleased with our trip and our guide. who was well informed and tried to make the trip "teenager friendly" for our two young teenagers. We even had a bit of flexibility offered because the other scheduled participants in our tour missed their train to Bayeux and therefore our trip was almost like a "private" tour. Thank you for offering a half day option. We wish we had had more time to do a full day.

THE TOUR WAS VERY ENJOYABLE AND THE GUIDE WAS BOTH PLEASANT AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. THE ONLY CRITIQUE, WAS THAT IN THE VAN IT WAS DIFFICULT AT TIMES TO TOTALLY COMPREHEND WHAT THE TOUR GUIDE WAS DESCRIBING. WE WERE SITTING IN THE LAST ROW, AND WHILE, SHE ATTEMPTED TO MOVE US UP CLOSER, THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS DID NOT SEEM EAGER TO SWITCH SEATS. SOME FORM OF AMPLIFICATION IN A THREE ROW VAN WOULD BE HELPFUL.

As a military historian living in Sydney, Australia, i've been wanting to go to Normandy for decades. The experience of visiting was absolutely amazing and we had the best tour guide, Naomi. She knew her history backwards and went out of her way to explain and show me details i was interested in. Despite a very loud and anoying young American brat of a girl in our small party, Naomi continued on with patience and understanding. This was the best tour of my 5 week European holiday. I would like to return with five friends from Australia next year and would very much like to book Naomi to be our tour guide on a full day tour. Many thanks, Tim Elderton eldertonbigpond.net.au

My tour was very small due to the train strike. Which was great! Lucie, our tour guide was adorable and very knowledgeable. This is a really fantastic tour--the history, the power of the place, and the different locations make it one of the highlights of my trip to the Normandy Area. Thank you!

Frederick was a wonderful guide. He has lived in Bayeux his entire life and was very familiar with all of the history. We did a lot in the one half day and Frederick made it all happen. I know that everyone has said that one half day is not enough and that is true. We could have stayed a few more hours in the American Cemetery Visitor's Center. But our decision and schedule only allowed us one half day and Frederick did an amazing job. Thank you for all of your efforts that day "Fred" to allow us to see as much as we did. Merci!
