Omaha Beach Half-Day Trip from Bayeux

If time is tight and you'd like to tour the Normandy beaches, this quick morning tour from Bayeux will show you all the poignant highlights of these important World War II battle sites. Your minivan holds a maximum of eight passengers, and a small group tour is the perfect way to get to out-of-the-way places in one day.

From Bayeux you'll drive to Pointe du Hoc, where the infamous German gun position threatened the Allied ships all the way to Utah and Omaha. The site was attacked by the elite 2nd U.S. Rangers, commanded by Lt. Col. James Rudder, who scaled the cliffs to get there. With its huge fortifications blown to pieces, the site remains as it was when the Rangers left it and looks like a lunar landscape.

Next, you'll drive along the coast to Omaha Beach, where soldiers of the 29th and 1st Divisions landed, fought and died. This operation was the bloodiest of the five beaches and almost failed, but the bravery of those young men turned this operation into a victory. Overlooking the bluff is the American Military Cemetery, where 9,387 service men rest in peace (keep in mind the movie Saving Private Ryan).

WOW! What a trip. My husband and I are very interested in WW2, especially being military. We ended up being the only people on the tour, so it was like a private tour. We had a 18m old child, and he was very patient, and supplied a car seat. The tour was very informative and allowed time for us to explore on our own. It was starting to snow when we went, but it only further made the view. I would go again, just to sit amongst the territory just knowing what took place in that very spot. Great Job. A+

We went with a toddler (4yrs old) and a teen (16yrs old) and Eva, our tour guide, was perfect! Knowledgeable, interesting, well read and fun! She made the trip better than we expected. Loved my tour guide - had a lot of knowledge and had past pictures to help envision the past events at the places we saw. The only thing I was disappointed with was our experience with Omaha beach. It didn't really seem to be the part of the beach where we hear the most stories about or where there was the hardest position to advance. The rest was great though

Although the tour was extremely quick, we were able to see enough to give us a good idea of what occurred in the American sector on D-Day. We really valued the guide's knowledge and if you only have a short amount of time to spend in Normandy, this is a good an rather inexpensive option.

Our guide did not talk during drive to beach, which driving was long. It could have been more interesting if he had talked about the country and towns we went through. We could have seen as much on our own. It was not worth the price.

The tour was extremely informative and meaningful. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, it was truly a joy to listen to her. An especially positive part about the trip was the fact that, at each stop, she gave us many facts, using maps and photos to help us visiualize what we were hearing, and then allowed us about 20 minutes to explore on our own. She was polite, respectful, and funny, with a wonderful command of the English language. She learned each of our names and made sure to use them often. She was also punctual, making an 800 a.m. start time more pleasant. At the end, not only did she recommend a restaurant for lunch, but she also took us there, told us how to order and informed us of the menu items she preferred. Our family would highly recommend using this tour service. A trip of a lifetime was made even more wonderful by this friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic service.

Most excellent guide. Charming and very well informed. We all learnt heaps. I would have enjoyed seeing part of the Allied, British Canadian action, but I guess that was too far away. I just felt it would have given a more balanced picture of what occurred and who was responsible for the landing. It wasn't only an American action.

The tour was excellent, except that we crammed too much into three hours. There was so much to see with so little time. There were really five hours of tour information done in three hours. The stop at the cemetery should have been longer.
