Berlin Dark Worlds Underground Walking Tour

Embark on the Dark Worlds walking tour and be transported to a fascinating time in Berlin's history. Hundreds of people a day walk past a green door in the Berlin subway station Gesundbrunnen without knowing that behind it, rooms entrenched in history exist. How uncomfortable it must have been to have been crammed inside these small rooms, with the constant whirr of the ventilation machine and the terrible thundering of the bomber aircraft overhead. The atmosphere can still be sensed today.

The main themes of this tour are the bombing campaign and civilian shelters, the bunker complexes as well as a selection of objects from below central Berlin, remnants from World War II. The complicated subject of the protection of wartime constructions as monuments is also discussed. Enjoy an exhibition of the finds that the Berliner Underworld Association have retrieved during their work below ground.

The Underworld Museum displays finds from the long history of subterranean Berlin, for example Berlin's late 19th Century pneumatic pipe post system, the cathedral like brewery cellars and the hundreds of kilometers of Berlin's drainage systems.

Excellent tour,guide knew her history very well and my son really enjoyed it. Worth booking in advance as tour was sold out when I arrived so if not had a booking, it would have been a wasted journey.

This tour was well worth it. There was lots to see and we were guided by a very knowledgeable person who explained everything very well, with the emphasis being on the bunker itself, with only background info about the war being given out. Much better than the flak tower tour!

Our Guide made some unexpected almost pro-Hitler comments which both shocked and humiliated my accompanying German friend _br/_ (those comments are very damaging considering he's the sole German representative for us tourists) but if you can ignore that then the actual tour was extremely interesting. I don't think I'll recommend it to others though. Screen your staff better.

really awesome tour. our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the history relating to the underground bunkers without being dry or stuffy. not only was it incredibly informative, but it was really fun, and probably one of the best things that we did in berlin, and best tour of the whole trip (which included stops in 3 different countries!)

Amazing things to see on this tour; guide Robin Williams was knowledgeable. I recommend it. However, 1) I wish the tour had gone more slowly through the site so we could spend more time examining the wealth of items on display; 2) I'd have preferred a group 2/3 the actual size (i.e. it was a little too large for my tastes); 3) Nowhere on our prepaid voucher did it say we needed to queue up at the Kasse to swap the voucher for tickets. I would have been happy to do this upon arrival - we arrived early - and I was frustrated to learn I had to queue up only once tour guide arrived. IOW, the need to swap your voucher for tickets should be clearly indicated on the voucher itself. Also, there should be a sign at the street entrance with an arrow pointing to the Kasse, saying 'exchange prepaid tour vouchers at the Kasse'. 4) More signs and explanations in English would be an improvement.

I considered the guide a good person, intelligent and very competent. Yes it was a good tour and gave me a good look at what the Berlin underground environment from WW2. Cannot really find any faults apart from that the underground infrastructure was not as grand as made out on the advert - or maybe I misinterpreted it!

All I can say is WOW! This tour was amazing. We arrived early at the Gesundbrunnen underground station and when you walk inside there is a tour office where you exchange your voucher prior to the tour. The tour was incredible and many of the facilities and artifacts we saw were memorable. They do not allow you to take pictures which was a shame, my husband was so anxious to do so! Among the most memorable parts was the room with the glowing walls. This is a definite must for anyone truly interested in the history of the average German citizen and the challenges faced when taking refuge in these underground shelters. My only complaint about this tour has more to do with the neighborhood. We tried to get a taxi back to our hotel in Potsdamer Platz afterwards because we were running behind and didn't have enough time to change trains. In retrospect, we should have just taken the train because it was extremely difficult to locate a taxi in the area. As an aside, there is a remaining German bunker located in the park across the street from this train station and it is worth a visit - if you can find it. We had some trouble, but a local pointed us up the hill in the right direction. We would recommend this tour to others.

This is a thoroughly absorbing hour-and-a-half tour of Berlin's underground, including a World War 2 air rid shelter. The tour guide was excellent and very informative. The tour party was encouraged to take part in questions and answers and made to feel included. We were sorry when it came to an end.

The meeting place was very hard to find, but the tour was good and very interesting. The only negative thing I can say is that the lady in the check in point was rude, and not just a little rude. She made me very angry, and I don't get made at things like that, I just smile and go on. Other than that, our group liked it very much.

The meeting point was hard to find. If coming from the west side of Berlin, you need to make sure you have at least one hour to get there by train. The lady we checked in with when we finally found the right point was very rude and made us feel like we were intruding on her time. The tour was good and interesting, and I think we all should know how things were and how people had to live during a horrible time in history.

I didn't know what to expect when I saw the busy train station but once the guide takes you behind the locked door - I could hardly believe there were bunkers there. It's such a strange feeling to imagine people actually lived here during WW II. The guide made the exhibits come to life - LITERALLY! The luminous paint was the strangest and coolest thing that I have seen in a while. It's definitely worth going on this tour and great value for money. I love Berlin!

This Berlin tour was amazing. The English guide was very informative and passionate about the bunkers and their history. It made you realise that the German people suffered just as much as we did. The whole experience was very thought provoking. There are other tours by the same guide and I will definitely do them on my next visit.
