Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour

Berlin, Germany

For a walking tour with a difference, head north of Berlin for a tour into the past at Sachsenhausen, one of the main concentration camps in Nazi Germany. While you walk, you'll learn the story of the camp, providing an essential background to Germany's past and present. This is one tour you'll remember vividly for years to come.

While the Nazis were hosting the 1936 Olympic games, slave laborers were being forced to build a huge new concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold political 'enemies' of the Nazi regime political, racial and 'asocial'. Of the 200,000 people interned, over 50,000 lost their lives before the camp was liberated by the Soviets in 1945.

The camp was then used by the Soviets until 1950 to detain former Nazis, German soldiers and political opponents of the communists. Many thousands more died from malnutrition and disease.

The key to this walking tour is the informative and illuminating narrative provided by your expert tour guide. During your 3-hour visit to the camp you'll learn important background history of the site as you walk through the Appellplatz parade ground, the Jewish Barrack, punishment cells, execution grounds and crematorium, Station Z, the Pathology Laboratory and camp hospital.

This tour was researched by historian Gabriel Fawcett, who is publishing an important witness account of the camp. All tour guides have their own special insights into the history of Sachsenhausen, and are experienced in unraveling the complex history of the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Berlin. Our guide was an excellent and very knowledgeable guide and made it enjoyable as well as educational. I would highly recommend this trip!! It was thought provoking and the displays really brought home the way the camp was run as well as treatment and daily lives of the prisoners. I would say this is a "must see" when in the Berlin area.

It was a great experience, our guide Flynn was very knowledgeable and was able to not only tell us what we needed to know but also suited the tour to our interests and keep us engaged. It was not as confronting as I had imagined but would recommend taking the time to go there for the experience. It was also a competitive price with what the other tour groups in Berlin had to offer.

My tour guide was Carlos. He was deeply knowledgable of the camp and the entire history leading up to its use. What really stood out about Carlos was his ability to be with us and shed light on any facet of the camp we had questions about in a reflective, knowledgeable and honest manner. I was great full to take this tour under his direction.

Very moving, very emotional day, Finn our guide had so much knowledge and knew when to leave us with our own thoughts. Everyone should be educated on this despicable camp.

Worthwhile tour. I have also been to Dachau Concentration Camp, and this one is quite a different experience. Good guide. Spends majority of time looking at actual camp and buildings rather than the museum/s, which is good.

The tour was excellent in as much as the guide provided a lot of information and was always very interesting. However, I think a little more prior information of what the tour involves would be useful. I mean that there was a lot of walking and I had recently recovered from an accident so found it tough going at the end. We were also standing outside in the cold for a long time and I think everyone was tired and very hungry by the end so maybe the tour could end a little earlier (even with the guide still talking to us if necessary outside the gates as he did before we entered) so we can stop and eat and rest before the walk back to the station.

I think this is really worth doing if you're in Berlin for a few days. The tour company were brilliant and easy to find outside the Zoo Garten train station, they have an board setup with a rep there all day. Our guide Nicholai was very clued up and a nice guy. I don't recommend this for small kids or babies though. Someone on our tour brought their toddler and he just cried and was bored most of the day. When we arrived there the temperature dropped and there was strong howling winds which added to the sense of misery that the poor people imprisoned their must have felt. A very sobering experience.

It was good, and well run. We knew what we were signing up for when we booked this tour, after all it was a concentration camp. But it was very depressing and I pretty much came out of there hating society. although this had nothing to do with our tour leader!! My only thing would be we would have liked a bit more explanation, break things down a bit. We got a bit lost being we didnt really know all that much abotu WW2, and the subsequent break of Berlin/Germany etc. Oh and there is no where to buy food or drinks out there so make sure you prepared for that!

You're better off doing this on your own. The entry to this camp is free and there are some guided tours available or you could get the audio guide for a small fee. Our tour guide was too fast and we didn't have much time to take pictures or read the descriptions.

This way an amazing day for us. Our guide Joe was the very best. He gave us a life time long memory for our holiday. I would very highly recommend this trip to anyone I spoke to. It took nearly the hold day with getting there and seeing the lovely scenery on the way and now we have a wonderful insight of what has happened in history. Many thanks

We were very impressed with our guide for the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp tour. Torgen was extremely knowledgeable and provided a respectful and nuanced historical account of the camp and memorial. We learned a great deal--and congratulate Viator for a hiring a guide with such a rich background--and also the ability to share his knowledge and insights.

I was so impreessed with the quality of the tour. The tour guide was interested and obviously passionate about his subject. It was very well organised, which all helped to make the trip an all round excellent experience. However, I would suggest that the sign for the meeting point be bigger and clearer, as trying to spot a badge was quite difficult, and the meeting point sign was quite small.
