Underground Berlin - Subways, Bunkers and the Cold War Walking Tour

Berlin, Germany

This Berlin walking tour will lead you into two active civil shelters from the days of the Cold War. The first one is beneath the Blochplatz and is part of the Underground station Gesundbrunnen. Originally an Air Raid Shelter from the days of the Second World War, it was renovated completely in 1983. Theatre Performances by the "Berlin documentary theater" take place in the shelter and insights into the backstage of the production will be given.

The tour details the history of this construction, especially after the Construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. The "Wall in the Underground" is discussed including plans by the authorities of the GDR to separate the Berlin Sewer System beneath the border. Hear about the so-called "Ghost stations", underground stations beneath the streets of East-Berlin which were closed to the public but used by the transit lines on their way from the West through the East and back again to the West. Also, your tour guide will discuss the question of how safe such anti-nuclear bunkers in a case of a serious blast atomic stroke really would be.

From the Civil Shelter beneath Blochplatz you will walk through a dark passage, directly into a transformation station of the Berlin Transport Authorities. Here, some information is given of how the electricity supply for the Underground network functions. The last part of the tour will lead you to another shelter, just one underground station away at Pankstrasse. This modern air raid shelter was opened in 1977 and more than 3,400 people can be protected in the fourth biggest installation of this kind in Berlin. In case of a potential nuclear disaster, the whole underground station Pankstrasse could be closed and converted into a shelter. Pass the big steel gas locks and get an idea of what it means to be isolated from the outside world.

This tour is really interesting, and you get to check out parts of the U-bahn system that you aren't allowed to visit normally. Totally worth it!

The tour was interesting. The guide could use some more work with telling stories._br/_ There was a point where she was inside the bunker, while most of us were in the underground station and she was trying to tell us something, but it was just too noisy to hear her._br/_ Also some signs to the office around the underground would be helpful.

Super-fantastic and excellent time in the bunker. Definitely something worth seeing. I wish we had more time to do more of their tours

Tour guide was great and the tour was very interesting. Our daughter who wasn't happy to be spending time on a "dumb tourist tour" with her parents, ended up actually enjoying herself!

Very interesting tour. Our guide John was very knowledgeable. It was really fascinating to see the what life in the underground bunkers would have been like - it's hard to imagine that this lies underneath the city.

My wife and I would highly recommend this tour. Our guide was very informative and well educated on the subject. _br/_ Our only problem was finding the meeting point, the directions given were probably fine for a local but rather insufficient for an Australian in Berlin for the first time, consequently we were 10mins late._br/_ After 2 phone calls to the tour operators we were finally hand delivered to our group. _br/_ Will definitely explore more of these Berlin tours next time we visit. The tour was great. Making reservation was user friendly. Robin William and the lady who was working with him are knowledgable and very helpful in suggesting other attractions to visit._br/_ The only improvement you may want to consider is to direct vistors which station to get off and also making vistors aware that the confirmation letter must be traded to a voucher.

We missed that tour because the directions were not too clear. We ended up on another bunker tour. It was in German. The guide tried to explain a little to us.

Excellent trip._br/_ If coming by U or S-bahn, take care when exiting the station at Gesundbrunnen - it's very big and also very easy to exit the wrong way! If approaching Gesundbrunnen via Westhafen and the S-bahn, take even greater care because the S-bahn isn't sign-posted as you exit from the U-bahn at Westhafen and you could end up getting very lost as I did! It was only thanks to the excellent staff at the company who run this tour that I managed to join the group at Gesundbrunnen. They guided me on my way by phone and reassured me that someone would wait for me to join the main group at Gesundbrunnen station._br/_ The tour itself is very informative. It is also a bit chilling, when you realise what was supposed to be in place as a refuge against nuclear war in the late 20th century. Well worth the trip though and extremely good value. Also, the tour does not drag on and on - 90 minutes and it passes really quickly - you're left wanting more, which is the sign of a good tour. I especially congratulate our Welsh tour guide - he was brilliant. Professional but also great fun._br/_ Thanks for a superb, unusual insight into this great city.

The museum is a fantastic place. The guide was sick, so I did the Heritage of World War II tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and there is a wealth of material. It was very instructive - and the temperature was cool underground, which made it the ideal activity in the Berlin heat - I would definitely have loved to do more tours offered by this association if I had had more time.

Very interesting tour. The only negative was the fact that the guide was a little hard to understand due to a heavy accent and a large tour group. Otherwise, I would recommend this tour for anyone interested in the history of the Berlin underground set up for the warwars.

The Cold War is a mystery to me, as is most of modern history. I was a little worried that the Berlin Underground tour would be more for the boffins and military enthusiasts than someone like myself. However, the guide has a wonderfully theatrical delivery and warm manner, she makes all the dates and figures come alive with a sense of the personal experience and effects on everyday life for the people of Berlin.

What an excellent tour. I had studied a lot about Berlin, its Cold War history and the Soviet era, but this tour did a good job of getting into a lot of detail I was unaware of. Highly recommend this if you're at all interested in German history or the history of Berlin.
