Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek Full-Day 4WD Adventure from Broome

Broome, Australia

Get a taste of the remote Kimberley region on this 4WD adventure from Broome.

See the Prison Boab Tree, once used to house convicts. Travel along the famous Gibb River Road, once a stock route, to Windjana Gorge and its spectacular landforms. Get your shoes wet as you walk through Tunnel Creek, a flooded tube tunnel. You are sure to agree that Mother Nature was remarkable when she created the Kimberley.

Set off on your journey heading north to Willare Bridge, cross the mighty Fitzroy River and make a morning tea break at one of the Kimberley's most famous landmarks the Prison Boab Tree, once used to house convicts. Whilst here we also view Malls Bore; a 120 meter long trough built in the early 1900's used to water up to 1,000 head of cattle at one time. You will leave the coast and travel inland along the famous Gibb River Road, once used as the main stock route for the region, before turning off to the pre-historic Windjana Gorge, regarded as one of the classic features of world geology and a great freshwater crocodile spotting site.

From here head to Tunnel Creek, an amazing 750 meter long flooded tube tunnel. Take an exciting walk through the tunnel wading through knee to thigh high water and hear the story of Jandamarra. Following afternoon tea, set off back to Broome with arrival approximately 10:30 pm after an en route dinner stop (own expense).

Important: Accessing Tunnel Creek walk involves 20 meters of clambering over boulders and 700 meters of wading through knee to thigh high water (shorts are ideal). Strap on sandals or old sand shoes must be worn through the water to protect from the rocky creek bed. To safely navigate the Tunnel you must be able to walk and balance yourself on uneven ground. Flashlights are provided.

Had a great time! Very long day but worthwhile to see so much of the real Australia. Gorge and walk through the underground creek were an experience like no other! Lunch was simple, but just right for the day. Dinner at the Willare Bridge cafe was better than expected, the barramundi is highly recommended! The quick tour of Fitzroy Crossing was most enlightening regarding the issues for remote Aboriginal Australians.

Really enjoyed this one. Weather was HOT HOT HOT and the scenery was spectacular. I was worried about this being too structured but in the end was the right mix of guided tour and time to explore. Great work.

Would have liked longer at Windjana Gorge, that seemed rushed and centered more around hurrying and having lunch rather than exploring. Tunnel Creek was a fabulous place but I was disappointed not taking my camera in because it was suggested by the guide it would be dark and we needed both hands for climbing in. Although that was true, there were places for spectacular shots and most other people took their cameras, my fault I guess. We crossed the Fitzroy River - very significant. It would have been good to stop somewhere and see this or at least slow down, that just rushed by. We had the latest greatest 4wd coach, which was well decked out and very comfy but the sound system was terrible. Half the time I couldn't hear what the driver was saying and there was constant annoying feedback and interference coming thru the system. The driver was a lovely man, great driving skills and excellent knowledge of the area, full of interesting history and stories, but at times it was too much information and personally I could do without the sing along. That's just me, other people obviously liked it. It was all just a bit too structured for me, I prefer it more laid back. Time to explore, rather than hurrying for morning tea etc. I felt the whole tour was pitched at an older age group, however, most of the people on the coach were younger couples and families. We were one of the 'older' forties!
