Godollo was the summer residence of Sissi, the beloved queen of the Hungarians, whose formal name was Elizabeth of Bavaria. Formerly the 18th-century central estate of the Grassalkovich counts, the castle is an outstanding example of Central European Baroque architecture. The estate was transferred to the ownership of the Hapsburg kings in 1867.

After your guided tour of the castle, you might like to take a stroll through the grounds to the Royal Stables and equestrian Riding School, or take a break and enjoy coffee and cake at the Palace Cafe.

The tour guide was excellent. Simple tour but very informative and of historical interest. Maybe too detailed for some, but I loved it. We didn't get our coffee and cake though, and could have used it given the time period. Great hotel pick up service.

If your time in Budapest is limited, this is a great way to see a little of the countryside. It's a pleasant half-day jaunt to a lovely and interesting castle with a knowledgeable guide. The castle itself is beautifully restored, although the outbuildings are in pretty sad shape (interesting to see the contrast). The main drawback to the trip is that there's a lot more to see at Godollo than the time allows -- gardens, theater, outbuildings, etc.

The visit of the Palace was great, but no pictures were allowed. And there is no tour of the palace grounds, too. Lastly, the free cakes served were stale cakes, not edible!
