Private Tour: Egyptian Museum

Cairo, Egypt

The second most frequently visited and certainly one of the most important attractions in Cairo is the Egyptian Museum. You will find the fabulous collection of King Tutankhamun and monuments from all periods of Egyptian history, from the pre historic era to the Greco-Roman period.

First built in Boulak, in 1891 it was moved to the Giza Palace of "Ismail Pasha" which housed the antiquities that were later moved to the present building.

Housing 165,000 Egyptian artifacts, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo attracts millions of visitors each year. The highlight for most are the rooms containing the priceless treasures of King Tutankhamun. His 6 gold gilded coffins, each one smaller and more intricately decorated than the last, dominate the main hall, while his magnificent death mask is the must-see item of the day.

The Royal Mummies Room (additional cost) is another highlight of the Egyptian Museum. Here you can see the mummies of many great Egyptian rulers, including Ramses II, the builder of the temples at Abu Simbel. Throughout the rest of the museum you will find countless Egyptian artifacts dating back thousands of years. Your guide will introduce you to the most important pieces before allowing you free time to explore at leisure.

This is a private tour allowing you to determine the amount of time spent at the museum. In addition you will have the chance to visit a Papyrus Institute to see how this famous artwork is made and have the chance to purchase genuine items if you wish. If you do not want to include this visit, just inform your guide on the day.

very interesting and the pieces in the museum are amazing. However, we were stuck in traffic for over an hour to get to the museum which was taken off the time we had inside. An hour extra would have been enough to get the benefit from this place.

Our guide was very good and very tolerent of my 3 children. He made sure it was safe for us to visit the museum before we left the hotel as he arrived at the museum very early to check out the activity. He was a very knowlegable guide and very helpful.

Nana, our guide, was great, again fantastic knowledge of the subject. Cairo Museum is so huge, it's hard to cover everything in 3 hrs but we saw the main artifacts and didn't at all feel rushed.

Our manager, Remon, from South Sinai Travel, was helpful as always, and our female guide, Hanan, was charming and informative. A great visit all round!

Best museum ever! Great guide too. The only downside was not long enough in the museum - you could quite easily spend a full day and more there.

Prompt pick up at hotel, and the Egyptologist was very good, she was wonderful at steering us through the museum in order to see the specific things we wanted to see, and in her excellent delivery of the relevent history, we would not have managed without her.

This is just the the same as the previous one I can't be more pleased. This was a fabulous tour. Our guide Hannan was so good nothing was too much trouble. I hope that you will tell her how pleased we were with ever thing she did. Please also tell other people that she is the best guide you have. thank you for the lovely day

The visit to the museum was very good with only a limited time I was shown the main exhibits. As I had decided to stay on in the afternoon and opting to see the King Tut exhibition later I could have been shown some other areas of interest which I found on my own. This is an areawhich should be considered for future tours. The guide and driver were both excellent

The museum was extremely interesting and our guide Reda, was fantastic. Perhaps in hindsight it may have been better to visit after our Nile cruise when we would have more understanding of what we were seeing.

This was the worst experience ever - the tour guide was totally disinterested in the museum and rushed through the main attractions spending only 45 minutes in the museum with us!! Afterwards saying we could spend as much time as we wanted in the museum by ourselves whilst he waited outside!!! He did not make the tour interesting at all. I've been to the museum with a qualified egyptologist before and was completely awe stricken but this time the guide left me with bad memories. He couldn't even speak properly. Sack the guide!!!

The museum was disappointing, did not do justice to the contents! We could have booked the same trip a lot cheaper there. A lot cheaper! A lesson for me to do more research. Also guide not great.

Very crowded but worth visiting. Not allowed to take pictures inside, which was only regret. However, advantage of going in a small group is you can hear your guide explain about the individual pieces. I recommend spending the extra money and visiting the mummies. We were able to see Ramses II.

A memorable experience - to be able to see artefacts that are so many thousands of years old is truly awsome and King Tut's exhibition is really fantastic! The extra ticket to see the mummy room is worth doing, but be careful at the ticket desk It was very busy when we were buying our tickets and we were shortchanged.

Excellent tour, great tour guide. We visited on a holiday. The museum was extremely crowded for a "slow" day. I wish we had a little more time in the Museum to just wander.

Tons of artifacts to see here. Again, our guide, was fantastic. She is extremely knowledgeable. The visit here may be a bit short though. But, I bet you could spent a full 8 hours here and not see EVERYTHING. The guide did a good job of making sure we saw all of the most important pieces from each era though.

Well, no complaints except that if you take the half a day tour it might be extremely short and you will have a millions questions left unanswered. The museum is very big and it is nice to have a private guide especially an Egyptologist is at your side!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. He took his time with all of the exhibits and gave us plenty of time to look on our own. He was very patient with all of our questions. He even helped us with our cameras and getting our included entrance fees. He took care of absolutely everything. Our driver was very safe and the vehicle was new.

Very good. The guide whisked us to the most popular exhibits in the museum and was very knowledgeable when we asked questions. We regret we did not see as much as we should but it was very warm and tiring in the museum.

Another "must see" if you're in Cairo. The museum is a perfect follow-up trip to the pyramids, showcasing the artifacts previously housed within and adorning the exterior of the pyramids we'd visited the previous day. The mummy room exhibit is well worth the additional charge. It is the ONLY opportunity in the museum or in Cairo that we had to view actual mummies. With SO many thousands of items, we'd have traveled around the world, and left disappointed, never having seen the most important highlights had we NOT booked a personal guide. Our Egyptologist guide, a Cairo native, was fabulous! He was not only a never-ending encyclopedia on EVERY aspect of Egyptian culture, past and present, he was one of the most personable individuals I've had the pleasure to meet! Few people who are THAT intellectual have a capacity to relate to PEOPLE, let alone a gift for it! It was with tremendous respect and a lump in our throat that we bid farewell to him. Our dream of experiencing Egypt had come true in a most enchanting manner. Our deepest thanks to him, and to Viator!

I do not recommend doing this with a paid tour. You can get to the museum easily by taxi by yourself. The tour guide was not necessary at all because if you know how to read English then you can take your time and look at everything just fine.

While the museum itself is a little dated, the King Tut exhibit is worth it on its own. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and tailored the tour to things we were interested in!

The museum definitely requires a guide, but ours looked somewhat bored, didn't really answer our questions very well, and gave us very little information. The van, however, was very comfortable.
