Chiang Rai and Golden Triangle Day Tour from Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand

A chance to visit the famous Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet! An early morning drive through beautiful scenery, with a stop at the Hot Springs at Maekajan, culminates in the chance to explore this world -famous spot, notorious for its opium trade!

From a viewpoint set high on the hillside, there are magnificent views over the Mae Khong River to the physical triangle made by Burma, Laos and Thailand at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong River. For a small fee, you can also enjoy the boat ride to view the splendor of mighty Mae Khong River.

Continue on to Mae Sai, the farther-most northern trading border between Thailand and Burma, where local lunch is provided. On the return journey stops are made at Akha and Yao hilltribe villages.

We were blessed that we were the only two on the tour, so we could tweak for what we preferred - ie we added the boat to Laos at Mekong River rather than the village tribes, as had done that before on a hike during previous visit. Excellent day ... very full but not "too long". The drive was full of great views and commentary when required, quiet time when needed. The whole itinerary was superb and rewarding.

Trip very well organized, just as advertised._br/_ For those who have more time, I would consider sleeping in Chiang Rai as it is a long trip.

Very cool tour...opted to go into Myanmar (another passport stamp) and I know that stretched the day a bit more, but our guide Meow was more than happy to accomodate us.

Fantastic tour, the guide and driver were first rate. Got to see all the fun sites (including a visit to Laos) with fantastic scenery along the way and did not feel hurried at any time during the tour. Highly recommended!

A long day and a lot of driving. A few interesting stops along the way but a very long day. Worth doing, however. Some extras available such as a boat trip across to Laos. The buffet lunch was good. We would've appreciated more information from the tour guide about the areas driven through, the crops being grown, how the locals cultivate the crops, etc. This would've broken up the long drive. A few crops were pointed out but no other information given. Would've been good to get more facts in general about the hill tribe villages, how they get on with the Thai locals, what dialect they speak, etc. All in all, it was worthwhile.

This was a good day; we had a nice tour guide. I would have liked to go across the border to Burma and to take a boat trip to Laos. I could have skipped the hill tribe, which did not seem genuine.

This is a very interesting way to visit the Golden Triangle and enjoy the scenery along the way from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.

The tour waas good and gave good information. It's a bit too far to travel in one day - perhaps a stop over would be better or do a couple of days in Chiang Rai.

The place was definitely worth seeing, especially if you want to have a taste of Thailand (not just Bangkok). But it would have been much better if the tour guide knew more historical information, and if their English was better. During the trip to the place there were a lot of 'lull' moments wherein she could have given some background of towns, sites, etc.

Considering the fullness of the day and the amount of time it took to get there, I would have enjoyed spending more than just 15 minutes in Mae Sai. Our guide seemed to want to rush us through in as quick a time as possible. I would have liked to cross the bridge into Myanmar, even for only a border stamp and 15 minutes at the market on the other side. The hot springs could have been skipped entirely.
