Castles Tour from Copenhagen: North Zealand and Hamlet Castle

Copenhagen, Denmark

If you love castles, Denmark has almost as many fairy tale castles as it does fairy tales! Visit the picturesque region of North Zealand just outside Copenhagen where you will see Kronborg Castle made famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet as well as the magnificent Fredensborg Palace and Frederiksborg Castle.

Leave Copenhagen behind as you head north through magnificent Danish countryside and coastline towards Elsinore and Kronborg Castle. Chosen as the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, this magnificent renaissance castle is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

After lunch (own expense), your tour continues towards Fredensborg, where the Queen's summer residence of Fredensborg Palace is attractively located in the middle of a lovely park, bordering the idyllic Esrum Lake.

The next highlight on your tour is Frederiksborg Castle, built by King Christian IV in 1601 - 1625. This pearl of history, built in magnificent Renaissance style with a touch of baroque, is now a national historical museum, containing treasures of painting, tapestry, porcelain, silver and furniture.

A most enjoyable tour with expert commentary from our guide. Castles were spectacular.

This was a really lovely trip, though I think I would have preferred to have the option NOT to be guided through the castles. For those who wanted to be guided, it was great, but I would have preferred to be able to simply wander on my own and spend time looking at those things that were of most interest to me. The countryside is really beautiful, as were the castles. The lunch was not to my liking--it would have been nice if we could have stopped somewhere that had multiple options so that we could choose to eat something we wanted at a price that was in our own individual ranges.

Was really nice and interesting. Was good that I did it on the internet as my husband stresses about everything. So it was nice to just turn up and hand in the voucher.

Scenery and Castles very interesting. Tour guide was very inflexible and insisted that we eat a $25.00 lunch in a restaurant of his choice. This was not part of the tour price or description. Having used Viator so often, I doubted if they knew of the guide's requirements for lunch.

I was left slightly disappointed by this tour having read all of the positive reviews on various sites. We were forty-five minutes late departing because the coach that they ordered was not be enough (57 seats for 64 people), which may have been caused by the on the day sale of tickets. We ended up leaving with something like 70 people on board which was too large a number for some of the castle rooms and adding to delays e.g. 30 minutes at the first castle for tickets and toilets. That said Mariella who worked as the tour guide did a fantastic job and was very knowledgeable and made time for everyone despite having such a large group. The castles themselves were also fantastic despite the weather and crowds. If I were to go again I would use the train and do it on my own though.

Wonderful sites but the size of the group was not practical and caused delays and restricted activity (a double decker bus needed to be called in once it became evident that not everyone would fit!)

Our guide was outstanding and this was the best part of our Copenhagen experience. She gave us so much information, not only about the castles and palace, but also current topics of Denmark. She always answered all questions carefully and patiently. When 2 passengers did't return to the bus, she went looking for them and didn't give up until she found them. This tour was outstanding.

You experience 3 castles and get a guided tour of 2. Both gded tour castles were fantastic, but were undergopiong renovation work at the timem which is typical of many older buildings in Europe. Well worth the trip!

We covered alot in one day. The drive up was great; who knew that there are such nice beach areas in Denmark! The castles were great and the lunch stop buffet had good food and seemed typically Danish. _br/_ My only critique was that we really had to run thru both castles in order to see everything. Perhaps you should leave out the stop at the "summer castle" that we could not go into anyhow.

A nice day in the Danish countryside. Very green landscapes, with nice towns. The castles were nice, the unquestioned favorite being the last one, Frederiksborg is an absolute gem! The lunch stop at Elsinore was so-so, but you had a couple of other choices, I suppose. The guide and driver were good.

The trip was excellent even thought we were delayed by a couple of passengers that dis not stick to the schedule. For this reason the tour guide had to rush through a counple of places. I recommend this tour to anyone.

This was the itinerary we wanted and enjoyed the tour, however, there were far too many people to go under one tour guide. There were over 60 people, so headphones should have been provided as we couldn't hear the guide most of the time. Also, so many people created delays. Lunch break should have been in town so those not wanting to dine could have toured the town.

The places visited were loverly. The tour guide was not the best. The group was large and he did not wait for everyone before he started talking and explaining things. Also, he was very monotone. Enjjoyed the places visited but not the tour guide.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Castles tour with our guide. She was fabulous and really made the tour, she was attentive, patient, a wealth of knowledge and so friendly and welcoming, she has a passion for her job and you can tell she has indepth experience on the Castles, Royalty, Copenhagen and surrounds. The tour was the right length and the information perfect. The only thing I did not like nor do I recommend is the restaurant by the ferry that we went to for lunch - it was awful. The service was bad, the atmosphere was bad, (an empty restaurant no matter what time of day speaks volumes) the food was not that good, not even for the price, I would of paid more for a better meal. That was definitely a low point for the day, but I won't hold it against the guide. The driver was very friendly too. Thank you, my sister and I enjoyed the tour.

Great guide, friendly with interesting facts along the drive. Wish we could have stopped a few more places to wander and shop. Only one suggested place for lunch. Bring your own food for on the bus - much cheaper - or walk about a block and there are a few more choices.

had a lovely time! got to see the inside of 2 castles and the grounds of a palace that included changing of the guards ceremony. the only down side for me was that i did not see the statue of holger the dane at kronborg castle as there was not enough time. inspite of this, i would still highly recommend this tour to everyone.

We spent 4 days in Copenhagen and although we loved it all, the sites we saw on this tour were the BEST of Denmark! There was a perfect amount of free time vs. guided tour...and a perfect amount of time overall at each site. The tour stopped for a lunch break at a YUMMY buffet (not included in price)...but the buffet didn't take US-issued credit cards, so bring cash for the buffet (or I'm sure there's probably an ATM close). The bus ride to the sites was full of beautiful scenery. There was a bathroom on the bus which I appreciated! If you only have two days in Copenhagen, make sure one of your days includes this tour!

The tour operator was very disorganized in getting this tour started. They filled one bus very quickly. They called a second bus and realized it wasn't big enough so they had to call a third larger bus. I suspect that they had many more walk-ups than anticipated and they may have called a guide at the last minute to handle the additional people. We started our tour about 1 hour after the first bus left. Even though it was a rainy day, the tour itself was good. This seemed to be an efficient way to get to see the 2 castles and some of the area outside of Copenhagen. The rating would be certainly be higher if not for the disorganized tour operator.

The tour provided a nice bus ride to the three castles instead of you having to go to each location independently. It was a good tour and we enjoyed the day. We opted not to join the group at a lunch, not provided by tour, in the recommended restaurant but instead walked around the local streets with shops and cafes.

Very nice trip. Guide was very nice and entertaining. The day was windy and rainy but we still enjoyed seeing the 3 castles we visited. We liked the lengh of time spent inside the castles as it was informative without a lot of unnecessary commentary that sometimes tends to drag out a tour. We would recommend this tour.
