Newgrange and Monasterboice Day Trip from Dublin

Dublin, Ireland

Don't miss the chance to take this popular tour of the Boyne Valley, one of Ireland's most important historic locations. You'll get a sense of the ghosts of Ireland's past at the tombs of Newgrange and see some of the country's most famous Celtic crosses at Monasterboice.

To help you experience the history of this ancient land, your guide will lead you into the actual tombs of Newgrange (dating from 3000 B.C.), one of the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chambers in Europe. They even predate the Egyptian pyramids!

Afterwards, you'll enjoy a relaxed drive through the Boyne Valley to visit Monasterboice, a spellbinding place which is home to some of Ireland's most famous Celtic crosses.

This tour is seasonal, operating from April to October only.

This tour was pretty good. It would not have been my first tour choice, but my nephew wanted to go on this one, so we did. Tour guide was excellent. Beautiful sites and countryside.

We loved this trip. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, the bus was comfortable and the locations were absolutely breathtaking. These were some of the oldest sites I've ever experienced.

Our tour guide was a nice old man, full of information and stories. However, this tour is not worth it. Newgrange is extremely boring; and if you are claustrophobic, this tour is not for you. You go inside a TINY room, they turn out the lights to do a presentation, and only 20 people fit in the room at a time. _br/_ Monasterboice: tour guide gave us interesting facts about the crosses and what the carvings on the crosses mean.
Review: 2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

Newgrange was fantastic but we would have prefered to spend more time there and seeing Knowth instead of Monasterboice. The tour guide was obviously enamoured with Monasterboice but less time there and more time at the other sites would have been great.

Great tour with Brian as our guide. He sprinkled in Gaelic phases and little poems during the commentary. Newgrange was astounding and shouldn' t be missed. Very interesting to learn symbolism of carvings on ancient Celtic crosses at Monasterboice. Lunch lines at Newgrange cafeteria were long and slow resulting in a rushed, unfinished lunch. Perhaps the tour could get some kind of timed voucher to allow for better access to the lunch line. Overall a great day especially for those who love history and archeology.

Very nice tour and the guide and driver were courteous and professional. Upon arrival at Newgrange they quickly gathered us together and explained how the stop would run, instructed as to where we needed to be and at what time so we could take the buses to Newgrange. The trip to Monasterboice was equally ejoyable.

We definitely enjoyed this day tour, especially the Newgrange portion, which was full of interesting history. I felt the time at Monasterboice was very rushed though, as we didn't have any of our own time to walk around and take pictures. The tour guide was very knowledgable, but a bit boring. Overall a very good experience!

Newgrange was a little on the boring side, it was nice but I learned more from the Natural History Museum, Monasterboice was very nice and our tour guide was very good with this. Wish there was more to learn about that place

Brian was a fantastic tour guide -- he was incredibly knowledgeable but very spontaneous in imparting his knowledge (as opposed to many tour guides, who rattle off a memorised spiel). I found his commentary delightful!

Really great tour, great guide, and an excellent combination. There were only 7 people in our group (this was in April, so I don't know if there would be more during a different time of year), so it was a great size. The tour guide (Colin) even sang an Irish ditty on the bus ride! All around great!

These sites were fantastic and a must see, considering their proximity to Dublin. Though we had rain at Monasterboice, it did not last long and it was well worth getting wet to experience the site. The tour guide was very informative and entertaining. I thought the tomb at Newgrange was a little cramped with the number of people let in at the same time, but feel lucky to have seen it at all. Overall, a unique experience rich with history.

Newgrange was a facinating place. Well worth the trip. The guide was great and covered a lot of information in an interesting way. If you do this trip be aware that there is absolutely no cover from the weather on site and if it rains you will get very wet. Monasterboice we felt was just a fill in at the end of the day.

Newgrange site and visitor center is great. However, be warned that the food there is expensive and that the line was very long. It's hard to just get a little bite of food. Guide was good but talked a lot

Family trip with 2 adults and 4 children ages 6-11. We had a great time. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and filled us in with fun filled facts along the way to New Grange and onwards later to the cemetery, that were rich with history and heritage in reference to the Boyne valley, river region, and the people who live along it. Lovely way to spend a day and reach back to a much earlier stage in Ireland.

An excellent trip, with a very lively guide with strong opinions on the history, politics, and religion of Ireland. At the megalith, the guides were very helpful and well-informed. HOWEVER, the instructions on how to catch the bus were very poor. The bus does not say Viator or Newgrange, the waiting place is INSIDE the tourist centre, not outside as the instructions imply, the announcement that the trip is leaving is only made inside, and refers to the Tour Operator not Viator, and as a result we waited for half an hour in the wrong place looking for the wrong bus, and missed the trip. They did reschedule us, and many days later.we did enjoy the trip. Recommendation to Viator: tell people that they have to REGISTER, INSIDE the tourist office, and make an announcement OUTSIDE.

This was well worth the cost, and I higly recommend as a chance to get out of Dublin and into the history of Ireland. Tour Guide was terrific ande very knowedgeable. Only negative is that you do not see both tombs at New Grange. I would recommend that they make the tour a few hours longer start a little earlier go later so that you can see both. Monasterboice was splendid as well.
