Montenegro Day Trip from Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Montenegro, with its vast, awe-inspiring landscapes, is one of Europe's best-kept secrets, but the word is gradually getting out, so see it relatively crowd-free while you can! Only a one-hour drive from Dubrovnik, Montenegro offers an unforgettable experience, with a combination of exceptional natural beauty and a rich history and culture. Enjoy the unique geography, where mountains meet the sea.

On this day trip from Dubrovnik to Montenegro, cross international borders and spend the day in one of Europe's lesser-visited gems. Enjoy a scenic drive around Kotor Bay with its numerous small settlements, including Risan, once the seat of the Illyrian queen Teuta, and picturesque Perast. Take a break in the medieval town of Kotor, encircled by walls and fortresses and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't miss its popular attraction, the Cathedral of St Tryphon.

Then continue your tour along the steep slopes to Cetinje (only April-October), stopping briefly along the way in the village of Njeguši. You will drive through Cetinje, once the seat of the Montenegrin rulers.

Continue towards Budva with a panoramic view over Sveti Stefan, an exclusive island hotel. In Budva, a charming ancient town that is today a lively tourist resort, you'll have more free time to explore. Return to Dubrovnik with a ferry ride across the bay.

A really nice trip to see Budva and Kotor. Spectacular scenery and very knowlegeable and helpful guide.

Very intersting trip-varied lakeside and mountain scenery-some very dramatic. Comfortable coach friendly guide. One disadvantage of taking in so much in one day is that one does not have enough time to fully 'savour' the delightful towns we called at.

In general, I would say that we had a good trip to Montnegro. The driver was excellent and we felt very safe. The guide was very good and friendly in the bus. But we were disappointed that we had no guide and explanations in the cities. Especially that there were a lot of other tours with guides giving interesting explanations .Maybe I did not read properly the description of the tour but I had the impression that we had guided tour even in the cities. I was glad to have my Michelin guide with me to have some information.

The tour shows a great part of Montenegro which is great, however the time in Kotor have to be longer, at least 2 h instead of 1 h, the break in the royal town could be easily skipped as there is nohing there to see. Also the tour could have given more time in the lake area (may be instead of spending a long time on the beach town)

Terrific trip! Special salute to the bus driver who handled every turn of events with aplomb, including rounding hairpin curve #22 (approximately) in the mountains above Kotor, which as it happens is a one lane road, and meeting another oncoming tour bus; more than just an awkward situation. Inasmuch as it was before noon, we had the right of way, or so our guide informed us. In any case the opposing tour bus backed up...as did an RV behind him...and we squeezed past. Some of our passengers enjoyed this little automotive joust less than I did.

Great way to see quite a bit of the country in one day. The only regret I have is that we did not have more time in Budva, which seemed like it had more to explore. The guide was excellent and the tour was scheduled and coordinated very well.

Very scenic trip. Guide was excellent, but driver arrogant and surly, with very poor driving manners, although a competent driver. The lunch break was at a fairly remote restaurant with the only option being a doorstep sandwich of home-made cheese and proscuttio. Recommend the tour but not the driver.

Excellent border clearance times but only 20 min in Cetinje and no further addition time offered a any point during the trip. Not worth the cost for the very limited stops.

Great trip if you like sitting on a bus all day. I enjoyed the scenery and the bay but the ratio of time off bus vs on bus was too disproportionate for my liking. Also watch out for getting stuck at the border crossing- we were held up 3 hrs on the way back making the trip 15hrs!

It was fantastic to see the places which we visited, some of the scenery was breath-taking. But sadly both myself and my friend were very disappointed with the day-trip. Far too much time was spent on the bus with a very disproportionate amount of time actually spent in the places where we stopped. This was not made clear prior to booking and if we had had this information prior, it is very unlikely that we would have booked to go on the trip.

We loved the places we saw but it was a bit fast-paced. However, our guide was knowledgeable and we enjoyed the day- we just wanted fewer stops and more time in each location.

Great day trip. Kotor enchanting medieval town. Spectacular scenery and views from twisting winding road to Budva even when interupted by low cloud/mist. More time in Kotor would have made trip better.

Like everyone else who has reviewed, this is a good tour; however there are a few items that could be changed to make this a great tour. You visit a small restaurant for lunch whereby you pay $3.5 euro for a beer and a cheese/ham sandwich. This is ok as you need to eat, however the fact that it is obvious that you are only brought here so that the tour operator and the restaurant can make money off the unsuspecting tourist makes you feel like a number. Yes, you are a tourist and they need to make money, but if you are going on this tour, make sure you eat at the first town, you have a better selection and it is more pleasant. However, the local guide mentions that you don’t have time for a sit down lunch at this town because of the limited time scales of the tour. This is infuriating, as they obviously give you less time and tell you not to have a sit down lunch so that they can take you to this restaurant which does not have anything to offer other than a cheap meal. If the tour operators read this review, please take this stop of the tour and provide more time at Kotor. They take you to the capital of Montenegro which is Podgorica. Once again, this is time wasted that could be spent at the next stop which is Budva. There is nothing to see here, a small main street and a museum, no charm compared to Budva or Kotor. Once again, the bus parks conveniently at a souvenir stand of shops whereby only the local shops or tour operator benefits. Because I have a French last name, the local tour operator put my wife and I on a French speaking tour. However, as bad as this was, there were actually more English speaking people on this tour then French. The local tour guide was more occupied on telling the French what was involved in the tour and provided little or no guidance to the English speaking tourists.Yes there are few things that could be changed on the tour, but don’t let this stop you from seeing Montenegro.

What a great tour guide - she made it interesting and gave a good historical overview of the various towns we visited. Our driver was very experienced in maneuvering the very narrow road along steep cliffs. A very enjoyable day!

The guide was lovely and very helpful. The driver was incredibly skillful and did a wonderful job manouvering the hairpin bends. The trip itself was long and it would have been better I think if we had spent more time in Kotor and Budva as these were the two places that were the most interesting. Overall a lovely trip great guide and a genius driver!

GOOD - This tour was one of the highlights of my visit to Dubrovnik. It gives you a chance to see a beautiful unspoilt area which isn't easily accessible to tourists. The tour visits several key places in the north of Montenegro both around the coast and a little further inland. Kotor Bay is truly stunning and worth the cost of the trip on it's own. I raved about it to all my friends and I would like to go back myself to see it properly._br/_ BAD - Not enough time in Kotor or Budva. We were given less than an hour in Kotor which is totally inadequate for such a unique and interesting place. Budva could have been scheduled as a meal stop if we had been given more time there. I feel we could have missed out the visit to the smoke house where there was nothing to do except buy their basic food and souvenirs. I imagine the tour gets a commission for this part of the trip as there was no other reason to stop there. The visit to Cetinje was okay but a guided tour of the historic area would have been better than allowing us to wander aimlessly. We were advised to visit the museum but not given long enough the make paying the entrance fee worthwhile. The modern town itself is a bit seedy and so isn't an attractive prospect for a meal or drink. Overall the tour is good and I'm very glad I took it. However, I think it would have been better if it focused solely on Kotor and Budva allowing you to explore these lovely places and have time for a relaxed meal or a spot of shopping instead of racing round in a panic.

Our tour guide Ida was very cute and was very helpful and informative. The tour was VERY long. We're talking seriously a FULL day excursion but totally worth it. Breath taking vistas of Montenegro's landscapes. A little challenging at times for people afraid of heights...

A most enchanting journey by bus, and skilfully handled by our able and informative guides! Were it not for this trip, my wife and I would never have savoured the joys and wonders of Crna Gora. We would have liked more than an hour in Kotor however, for it was a most beautiful, fortified town and the outer battlements would have been a trek in itself! Citenje - one could almost skip in spite of its historicism. Budva - a mini Dubrovnik in its own right. And the hair bends were an experience in themselves!

Excellent, professionally run from beginning to end. Montenegro scenery and tour route was excellent. Prior to booking this trip I noted other reviews indicated how more time in Budva would have been preferable and I could not agree more. Viator should listen to the consistency in the critique. 50 to 60 min in Budva is too little and too rushed. The tour would be perfect if given time to both stroll the old town of Budva and soak up the atmosphere of the coastal town with a swim or relaxing in a cafe or beach bar.

Montenegro is beautiful. We loved Kotor. We could have spent a lot more time there than the 1 hour alotted. The trip up the mountain yielded some great scenery. The stop for lunch was okay, basically a ham and cheese sandwich but the price was right and it helped you avoid having to bring anything with you. The museum stop was not bad (better than other reviewers indicated), but we would have preferred more time in Kotor. The visit to Budva was nice as well. Our guide was also quite good.

Fantastic trip even though I was the youngest by about 25yrs, the guide was lovely and full of information. Make sure you take your Euros & if you have a week stomach for winding roads - maybe try another trip as the 25 hairpin corners might set you over the edge.
