Highland Lochs, Glens and Whisky Small-Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Fancy sampling a wee dram o' whisky and exploring the rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands? Combine the two on a small-group day trip from Edinburgh, and discover the real taste of Scotland! You'll see the area's beautiful scenery, full of lochs and glens, and sample Scotland's favorite beverage. With a maximum group size of 16 passengers, this special full-day tour allows you to have a memorable and personal experience.

Your day trip from Edinburgh to the Scottish Highlands takes you across the famous Forth Road Bridge , giving you a great view of the spectacular nearby Forth Rail Bridge, one of the longest cantilever bridges in the world.

After you cross the Highland boundary faultline, the scenery changes from the rolling farmland of the Lowlands to the forested hills and mountains of the Scottish Highlands. This thick forest is the very same mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth as "Birnam Wood." One part of the wood is especially beautiful -the Hermitage - and this is where you will take a walk. Here, surrounded by thick forest, the River Braan crashes over spectacular waterfalls . This is a migratory route for salmon, and they can often be seen trying to leap the falls.

Follow the wide valley of the River Tay , the longest river in Scotland with the greatest flow of water of any river in Britain. Stop in Pitlochry for lunch (own expense), and take the opportunity to visit a whisky distillery or the dam where salmon leap in summer.

Continue to Killiecrankie and the Queen's View, where on a clear day the view stretches from Loch Tummel to Schiehallion and beyond to the hills of Glencoe. Drive over the hills to Fortingal, where the Fortingal Yew tree is the oldest living organism in Europe. The village is the legendary birthplace of Pontius Pilate. Next you'll head along the shores of Loch Tay, in the shadow of Ben Lawers. At the head of the loch is Killin, with the wonderful falls of Dochart in the heart of the town.

After a short stop, continue over the Braes of Balquhidder, the final resting place of Highland outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor.

The Scottish Highlands are Europe's last great wilderness! Traveling in a small group means you can take lots of stops and reach out-of-the-way places, giving you more time out the van to discover the real Scotland.

We really loved this trip. Our guide was fantastic and seem to have a world of knowledge. He was friendly and we enjoyed the local Scottish music that filled in the rare moments when he wasn’t educating us on Scottish history!! Would do this trip again!!!

We took this tour on a somewhat rainy September day and it was fabulous. Our guide, Dave, has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Scottish. He shared many stories during our drives to each stop which made the day whiz by! First stop, Dunkeld, included time for tea and scones or just exploring the quaint village; next stop at Hermitage Park and hike to the waterfall was a great diversion. Dave was able to answer every question my tree-loving husband had about the forest; the distillery stop was fun and educational, quickly followed by a lunch stop in Pitlochry - we dined at the Old Mill Inn - good burgers. Next stops included fabulous overlook of Loch Tummel and Glencoe Mtns and a stop in a village with time for more tea and scones! This trip was the highlight of our 9-day Scottish vacation. Our 21-year old son was with us and he loved it! We highly recommend!

This tour was a bit disappointing as we had thought this trip included a tour of the inside workings of a whiskey distillery. Unfortunately, the Dewar's Distillery that we visited will be closed down from August to October 2011 for maintenance repairs. We were able to only tour their inside exhibit and do a whiskey tasting. However, the rest of the tour was beautiful and included a tour of several towns along our way through the Highlands. Our tour guide "David" recounted the history of each area we visited and kept us entertained along the way!

This was the high point of my 12-day vacation in Scotland, without a doubt. Ian, the driver, was a truly talented storyteller, both for Scottish history in general and the specific sights we visited. The walk in the Hermitage was simply breathtaking and a perfect balance to the time spent riding. Being at the Queen's View is like standing inside a postcard. The whisky tour is a fascinating insight into the business. I took four separate tours with Rabbies and thought this one was by far the best.

The tour was very good. It set off on time, with few breaks which was welcome. We covered a lot. Whisky tour was good. Our guide-driver,Shelby, was excellent and was very informative, full of enthusiasm. We saw everything leisurely, still keeping up to the time. I will recommend to my friends.

Great tour. We were with Kevin, who told us a lot about the Scottish people. We saw beautiful lochs, rivers, a nice small Scottish village and a Whisky Destillery. The latter was a little disapointing (if one insists to critizise anything at all), because the were only parts of the whole procedure left at that very distillery. The malt is being delivered and the Whisky doesn`t age there either. Nonetheless we had a great day and especially loved Kevin.

Great tour and lovely views. Disappointed again though as the Whisky Distillery we went to on the day of the tour was not opened to show us around and we sat with a slightly boring tv screen and a lady from the distillery talking about the history only. The Highlands and Glens were brilliant and our Tour Guide Ian is really great!!!! Good day all in all.

Our tour guide was great. Most of the stops were worthwhile, but the itinerary got a bit tedious, especially the part after the Dewar's tour. All in all, it was worth it. I would definitely try other Viator tours in the future.

Scotland is so beautiful. Our guide was very nice and told us everything we wanted to know about both past and present. The trip to the whisky distillery was very interesting. And the guide here was also very good. All in all, we had a great day and will remember it for a long time.

Great day out with beautiful scenery. We had a great driver and guide. I would definitely book another trip with the company. The pace was good and I liked the fact that 16 was the maximum number. I did think that some of their joining instructions - reconfirming and bringing photo ID were a bit over the top. In the event I was not asked for photo ID, although I had brought my passport with me.

We found the tour to be worthwhile; however, we had done the Loch Ness tour a couple of days before this one, and they cover almost identical routes, so this was a little boring for us.
