Siena and San Gimignano Day Trip from Florence

Florence, Italy

Discover Siena and San Gimignano, two of Tuscany's most popular attractions, on a day trip from Florence. With your museum fees and transport taken care of, you can sit back and enjoy your visit to these tucked-away Tuscan hill towns.

Your day trip takes you through the picturesque countryside of the Chianti region, a magical landscape of cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves you'll recognize from Renaissance paintings. On your guided tour of the medieval walled city of Siena, you'll visit the cathedral and its museum, and admire Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. There will be free time for you to enjoy lunch in Siena (not included).

After lunch, your tour continues to San Gimignano, a tiny city that has survived the centuries. Hilltop San Gimignano is famous for its numerous skyscraper-like towers, frescoes and other art treasures. You will have free time to explore this fascinating city.

On the way back, through the ample coach windows, you will be able to admire the ancient medieval village of Monteriggioni, enclosed by its famous still-intact walls.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. We loved our tour guide, and our local guide in Siena. We had ample time at each location. We had the option to eat lunch with our guide or go off on our own. We chose to have lunch with our guide and it was great! The food was typical Tuscan, and the servers were all dressed in the fashion of peasants in historic times. Everyone on the tour seemed to enjoy the day as much as we did.

We loved this! Roberta was our guide in Siena and was very informative. BEWARE: This is a lot of walking up and down so if you have difficulties this may not be for you.

Fantastic tour. I strongly recommend it. The guides are super friendly and very knowledgeable. They talked about the history of Florence while we were on the way to Siena. We were given plenty of free time to explore alone. Siena and San Gimignano are beautiful.

Once out of Milan, it was like a step back in time. I will be honest, i wasnt expecting much from this tour but i was pleasantly surprised. it was one of the best tours that i have been on. The local tour guide in Siena showed us the sights and explained the history and artworks etc. we had a typical Tuscan lunch in one of the restaurants in the town centre, and really enjoyed it.San Gimignano just capped off a great little day trip. Well worth the effort.

The day trip from Florence was the perfect way to see a slice of Tuscany and 2 wonderful towns. The bus guide (whose name I have, regretably forgotten) did a wonderful job of communicating (en route) in English, Spanish and French....wow! Our local guide in Siena, Nicoletta, did an awesome job making us feel welcome and well-informed about her hometown. She was friendly, responsive, knowledgeable and good-humored. Kudos to Nicki and to you, for hiring her!

These Tuscan towns are a "must see". We had good weather. The coach is comfortable. Wish there can be one more hour of free time given in Siena.

A full day climbing steps at Sienna and San Gimignano, but worth it. A must if you want to see the Tuscany region. Lunch in the Sienna town square was good and reasonably priced. The only downside to the Sienna tour is that you are not allowed to take pictures inside the bascilica.

IWorthwhile seeing sienna but in Winter the visit to San Gimignano is rushed and mostly in darkness. I'm sure it would be fabulous at other times of year.

Both Siena and San Gimignano were so beautiful and the guides helped us enjoy them even more. Siena has so much history to be shared with visitors and the guide was very able to explain stories of the city and made it so interesting to learn more about the people and the customs. San Gimignano was just so beautiful and we enjoyed the time to explore and shop!

Loved this tour. Only problem was not enough time in Sienna, if you decide to eat with the group. The restaurant suggested by the tour guide was excellent value and food was great. Coach was clean and comfortable and guide spoke good english. Would highly recommend this tour if you want to see the most beautiful Tuscan countryside.

The cities were wonderful and the local guides were very informative. It would have been nice if the buses would have dropped people off closer to the city center and then picked us up there. There was too much walking to and from the bus parking areas which made it difficult some of us with walking difficulites. The walking on the tour was fine but the buses could have dropped people off closer and then gone to park.

THIS TOUR IS A MUST! We loved our day exploring the countryside. Siena was wonderful with our LOCAL guide Paolo. He was very informative and had a cute sense of humor. We got a real feel for what life was life centuries ago. On to San GImignano....a magical village tucked in the beautiful countryside. As we wandered around independently, we could totally imagine what life (in Medieval times) was like within the walls surrounded by stunning towers.

Nice tour, good local guide in Siena. Felt there wasn't enough time in San Gimignano but at least it was enough to assess if one wants to return. Very professionally run by the local Florence tour company.

We could have used more free time. The tour guide made us a reservation for lunch, which we thought would be a good idea since we had never been to Siena. Sadly, the place took over an hour for pasta so we lost a lot of exploring time. We should have just grabbed a panini on our own. Plus, we had to sit with people that we didn't know from the tour bus. They were nice, but when you don't speak the same language, it's a little awkward to eat with strangers. Still, the towns are beautiful and we liked not having to drive. Bus was very clean and comfy.

Tour guide was helpful and attentive, local guide at Siena was excellent and provided a good history of the area. Whilst a group lunch was available, there was no pressure to participate. Ample free time in Siena to explore. Felt that 90 mins was not sufficient to explore San Gimignano, however realize there was a lot of distance to cover and already a full day tour. Very good value

Everything went really well and I loved the trip. My one criticism was that our Siena guide was required to narrate in 2 languages. This gave her little time to explain things a bit more fully and it all felt very rushed. We only had 10 minutes 'free' time in the cathedral which was far too short. Perhaps you should think about curtailing lunch time a little and shortening the time in San Gimignano. The Siena guide was good but constrained by these circumstances.

The directions for the meeting point for this trip were very vague - it was actually at a bus stop - which wasn't mentioned. Our guide was just so-so. she had no personality, spoke very quickly so quickly we didn't even work out what her name was despite asking her to repeat it, and she didn't understand questions asked of her in English. We headed off through the Tuscan countryside to San Gimignano - our first glimpses of it on a far hill were delightful. We walked uphill into the town and had a little over a half hour to look around. It would have been beneficial if we had been given a map of the town - we could have worked out where things were a little eaiser. We were lucky enough to see a little sign on the wall pointing to "Ponte Panoramico", so we ducked down there to be rewarded with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. On to Sienna, where we had a half hour walk from the bus to the Campo di Palio where we had lunch and two hours free time until our walking tour of the town. Again this would have been better had we been given a map of the town to get our bearings. Matteo, our guide, was great. He showed us through the Duomo, the Librarie Piccolominae, through hilly back streets to the church of St Catherine, explaining different aspects of life in Siena and answering our questions in detail. An excellent two hours. A word of warning - there is lots of walking up quite steep hills at times- you need a certain level of fitness and also need to wear proper walking shoes - not slip ons as some people had on our tour.

On time, helpful, top coach and excellent driver and guides - what else can be said Site guide at Siena excellent but maybe think of on-guide microphonetourist receivers as bits were difficult to hear in the 2 churches as we had the larger of the 2 parties. I must stress it was a great day out.
