Cu Chi Tunnels Small Group Adventure Tour from Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Experience the world of the Cu Chi freedom fighters with a visit to their famous tunnel system. This network of over 200 km of tunnels became legendary during the 1960's when they played a vital part in the American War, allowing the Viet Cong to control a large rural area close to Ho Chi Minh City. In their heyday, the tunnels were functioning underground cities.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City behind, take a 2.5-hour journey west towards the Cambodian border bound for the Cu Chi Tunnels. The Cu Chi tunnels were built by local fighters during the Indochina conflict as a base from which the Viet Cong could operate from close to the Southern Vietnamese capital. Initial construction started in 1948 when the Viet Minh required somewhere to hide from French air attacks and by 1965, the Cu Chi tunnel complex was estimated to consist of 200km's of tunnels. It included, hospitals, schools, meeting rooms, kitchens and sleeping quarters. Life was difficult for the inhabitants and to protect against outside intruders bobby traps were laid throughout the complex.

Your local guide will take you on a fascinating tour around the Cu Chi Tunnels where you'll learn more about the conditions the Vietnamese people lived in, the hardships they faced and the amazing ingenuity employed to maintain life in the tunnels.

Very good tour guide, only 5 of us on the trip which was a good number. Would recommend this, good value for money, very interesting and a chance to go into the tunnels. Also stopped in a village on the way which added to the experience.

Amazing place to visit and know the ground realities of how and what the guerillas went through. An extra word for the tour guide who did not restrict himself to the tour destination but kept us informed of the places we were passing. He shared his country's history and progress with us too.

Excellent half day trip - great value - everyone should see these tunnels (even if the '70's anti-American propaganda film shown is rather over the top!)

A very interesting tour. I was amazing to not only see different tunnels but also get to walk through some of them. Presentations and reproduction were well done, how they lived and survived. Our guide was a wealth of information, and this made the tour even more interesting.

Our tour guide was amazingly knowledgable as well as adding a personal touch to each of the stories. The history of the area is staggering and well worth taking a look at. If you're given the chance to visit the Handicap Handicraft factory then do so! Amazing craftsmanship and all goes to a good cause.

We were fortunate to have an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly guide. He made to tour for us. The tour was eyeopening as showed us that the Viet Cong were ingenious in setting up the tunnel system to defeat the Americans and all their technology.

We had an excellent guide - his English skills were very good and he was very caring and pleasant. We had an interesting small group on the tour. An eye-opening coverage of the guerilla tactics used during the American War.

A great tour tainted slightly by the propaganda DVD you watch at the beginning. The additional 'real' sound effects of AK47 rounds being shot off at the nearby shooting range make the tour somewhat strange. You have the opportunity half way through the tour. My girls, aged 7 and 9, also enjoyed the stop off at the rubber plantation and local resident's house.

Huong I think her name was, was an amazing tour guide. The experience is one I will never forget. We were able to choose how far along the tunnel we went as well as shoot some guns. It was an amazing trip, and very insightful. I will never forget it.

The tunnel experience was as I expected. The opportunity to go underground, and fire rifles are available for those wanting to try. The refreshment stop with green tea and boiled yam may not be to everyone's liking. The rifle shooting area is quite loud, but lets you imagine what the sounds of was were like.

We booked in for this trip the night before and were picked up from our hotel in an airconditioned bus (big tick) and were welcomed aboard by our Tour Guide, the lively and hilarious Sunny. A couple of hours out to the site went quickly with lots of information being passed on and places of interest pointed out. The tunnels themselves were amazing - the resiliance, determination and creativity of the Vietnamese people was a real eye opener. Loved the Vietnamese Nike trick, that really got us talking, absolute brilliance! Well worth your time, we accidently dropped in on a wedding ceremony on the way there (they had set up the wedding reception on the road). The locals were so excited to share a beer with us, it was a fantastic half day of past and present Vietnam.

The arrangements went smoothly. The guide was very clear and he presented the information very well. Personally, I felt I had a good impression of what life was like for both sides of the conflict but felt I should have read up more on the background as the guide of course can only give the official version of events.

Once again it was good to get out of the city and see some of the countryside. This is a very important part of Vietnamese history that we have all heard about, it was fantastic to actually see it for ourselves and experience how small the tunnels actually are. We got to shoot a weapon from a variety they have on display. This was great fun but make sure you have plenty of money with you as it is a little expensive.

I enjoyed this experience but we were there in May and it was very hot, as we come from Darwin we are used to this heat someone from a colder climate might struggle. Like other review I read the guns shooting is next to the cafe and is very loud but that is all part of the experience if you want piece and quiet then take a trip down the Mekong. My husband and I found 20 metres of a crouch walk through the Cu Chi Tunnels was enough even though our son would of happily went further. I was at the back of our group and I was in complete darkness which was no good for me but maybe if you took a torch with you then it wouldn't be so bad.

Visiting Cu Chi Tunnels is an experience not to be missed where one wishes to learn about the Vietnam war and the Vietnam people's skillful survival strategies. Our guide is knowledgeable however may explain the events with more detail. She has a good sense of humor and manages to keep our tour group members comfortable during the drive to and fro Cu Chi.
