New Territories of Hong Kong 'The Land Between' Tour

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Discover Hong Kong's rural beauty away from the bustling streets, neon lights and the skyscrapers. 'The Land Between' tour will allow you to see another side of Hong Kong and it stands both as a gentle reminder of Hong Kong's past as well as a symbol of its hopes and dreams for the future. Lunch as well as coach transportation are included.

Your first stop is the Yuem Yuen Institute, which demonstrates the significance of contributions from Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist to the local society. Then it's out into the countryside, past banana plantations and up the tallest mountain in Hong Kong, Tai Mo Shan, for a panoramic view of Hong Kong Island and the industrial town of Tsuen Wan to the south. 'The Land Between' continues heading north through the lush, rural landscapes passing both Shek Kong and Lam Chuen Valley enroute to the traditional rural market at Luen Wo. Here you can browse among colorful stalls piled high with dried fish, herbs and vegetables, fresh fruit and flowers - a pungent combination.

Then it's time to head to the border of Hong Kong and China, stopping at Luk Keng. Close by is a Hakka Village and a bird sanctuary where Chinese pond herons and night herons nest. Next, it's a trip through the Plover Cove Country park, and on to the fishing village of Sam Mun Tsai to see how local fisherfolk breed fish in submerged cages.

Finally, your tour will return to Hong Kong via the new industrial town of Tai Po, the Chinese University and Sha Tin, once a sleepy village and now the site of an impressive new town. In Sha Tin, visit the state-of-the-art Sha Tin Racecourse (this stop will be omitted on race days). The tour concludes with a Chinese lunch at a popular restaurant in the New Territories.

Our guide was great and very informative. Enjoyed the temple stop but found the others disappointing. I was picturing a cute little fishing village, not a fish farm that we stopped to look at from the shore. There was no view from the stop on the mountain, which our guide told us was normal, and the waterfall was very, very small. If you have time to kill and want a day out of the city you might consider it, but go knowing the temple is the only really interesting stop.

The tour guide was very friendly. _br/_ I waited for the advertised Haka village visit, additional to the walled village visit. This did not happen and was the single reason I chose this particular tour. Why was this not included please? My sister had been on the tour before and recommended it because of the Haka village visit._br/_ Visiting the walled village was interesting but not as historical as an original Haka village.._br/_ The food was terrible and the setting was worse.(A 'popular' restaurant ...maybe in the 1950s?) There was no substantial food for the two vegetarians._br/_ Generally a good tour except the awful admission of the most interesting ADVERTISED village!I feel as if I should be given another ticket to redo that part of the tour.

Gigi was great, but the content of the tour could have been better. I had particularly chosen this tour as I wanted to see the fishing village. However this turned out to be just standing on the waters edge looking out to where a few boats were moored. Very disappointing. I found the tour to be very expensive and the lunch was bland.

This tour was quite disappointing and expensive for what it entailed. The guide was ok but the stops were brief and some of the features mentioned were viewed from the bus or only had very brief stops. The lunch was average and definately not worth it for the vegetarian selection - there was no option for plain fried rice as they added meat, even though they had adequate time to prepare.

This was another of the fine tours we have taken through Viator during the past two years, Not only was our guide, Susan, extremely knowledgeable about the sites we visited, but she had, in addition, a wonderfully engaging personality. Her interspersed tales of personal travel experiences had all of us glued to her every word. This is the sort of experience that brings me back to Viator when I plan my vacations--exceptionally interesting sites and equally exceptional guides.

We weren't leaving until the evening so decided on this half day tour. I must admit it wasn't really what was advertised. It consisted of stopping at the scheduled "places of interest" usually for only a few mins as this is all they warranted, then get back on the bus and driving to the next one. There were no "colourful stalls" to look or shop at, the bird sanctuary consists of an island with some local birds that you can barely see and the fishing village is just a walk down a pier. You can't even see the submerged fish breeding cages as they're submerged! We were the only ones of a group of 9 that opted for lunch, we were dropped off at a restaurant more like a senior citizens club and collected about an hour later, the food was nice though. If you want to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city, this is a decent enough option but for interesting sites I would say no. We have booked several Viator tours over several countries and this is the first one that I would not recommend.

The Land Between tour showed a completely different aspect of Hong Kong to that you get from the main island and Kowloon. Our guide was knowledgeable and provided a lot of interesting details that you can't get from the guide books. We would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the "other" Hong Kong.

If you want to see a less urban side of Hong Kong this is really a good choice! I also enjoyed the historical information that our tour guide told us about! I think the highlights of the day were the "Bride's Pool" and the waterfall in Tai Po, and the Yuen Yuen Institute.

We saw an entirely different side to Hong Kong. The institute we visited was interesting and spectacular. Seeing waterfalls and wetlands was fascinating. The guide was very informative, and the lunch was great as it was at a restaurant not used by tourists.

It was a great chance to see the other side of Hong Kong, the green, lush and "older" ways, although they aren't so old if they still live like that. Our tour guide was fabulous! Spoke English, was very personable and knowledgeable of the area. She had amazing stories. She catered to the group's diversity of interests. It was well worth it, and I would highly recommend it!

We really enjoyed this tour. Our guide was so friendly and informative. He even took photos of me in front of landmarks on my camera. New territories are beautiful; the trip is well worth the money. One tip: don't bother with the lunch if you don't want to mingle with the other tourists. Some of ours were quite rude.
