Nara Afternoon Tour of Todaiji Temple, Deer Park and Kasuga Shrine from Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

Venture to Nara from Kyoto for the afternoon. Due to its past as the first permanent capital of Japan, Nara remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples. Accompanied by your local guide, you'll visit the Todaiji Temple to see Japan's largest Buddha, Deer Park - home to hundreds of freely roaming deer, and Kasuga Shrine - Nara's most celebrated shrine.

Japan's first permanent capital was established in the year 710 at Heijo, the city now known as Nara. As the influence and political ambitions of the city's powerful Buddhist monasteries grew to become a serious threat to the government, the capital was moved to Nagaoka in 784.

Nara is located in the Kinai plain, less than one hour from Kyoto. Due to its past as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples.

Visit the Todaiji Temple, constructed in the 8th century, is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples. In it's huge precincts are various national treasures of Japan. The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) is one of the world's largest wooden buildings. One of Japan's best-known temples, it enshrines a gigantic bronze statue of Buddha. A wonder of religious architecture.

See over 1,000 tame deer roam freely in the verdant 1,250 acres peaceful park. If you wish to feed the deer, they will gladly eat from your hand. Special deer food is available for sale in the park grounds.

Tour concludes with a visit to Kasuga Shrine, the most famous and beautiful Shinto shrine in Nara, it features some 3,000 antique stone and bronze lanterns.

Travel by return coach to Kyoto.

We sow some very nice places. Unfortunately the tour guide was very hard to understand.

This was an enjoyable afternoon in spite of continuous heavy rain. The guide was knowledgeable, humorous and spoke good English. Nara is a lovely City and the tour gave us a view of some of it's treasures.

Excellent guide, she had much information, answered many questions and allowed you to also enjoy. She was quiet and strong and informative--did not talk to hear herself talk

We had another excellent guide. She was super sweet and throughout the ride to Nara she talked about Kyoto and all the towns we were passing by. I thought it was cool that she didn't just leave the talking for when we actually got to each sites, she was really enthusiastic and passionate about what she told us. It was extremely cold that day and it snowed a little but she made sure to get us through all the spots and everything she talked about was really fascinating. She gave us time to play with the deer and she gave some recommendations on the bus ride back of places to eat and entertainment.

this was a perfect way to spend the afternoon--short but sweet. our guide was very well-informed, giving us enough information on the way to nara to keep us occupied, and then giving us a lot of very useful tips about where to spend the rest of our day in kyoto on the way back. all 3 stops wer4e well worth the visit. i wish we had had an opportunity to do some souvenir shopping in nara.

It was convenient with the bus as that day was raining. However, the tour guide could have been more approachable and interactive with us. She didn't stand up and look at us when she introduced us the places while on the bus.

A good tour. I would have preferred to go by ourselves if not for a 1.5 year old. The train connectivity is pretty good and you don't have to spend half the time in the bus. I would recommend to do this on your own. Parents with kids - not all locations are Pram Friendly.

This is a good way to visit the Todaiji Temple from Kyoto. Our visit to the Kasuga Shrine was rushed however, and it would have been nice to have at least half an hour in Nara itself!

The bus had a compromised air conditioning system on a day where it hit the high 90sF with humidity in the high 90s. We enjoyed Todaiji and Kasuga and personally, the paths around Deer Park had way too many deer droppings for us to pleasantly enjoy the animals on an extremely hot and humid day. The content of the tour was OK, we couldn't hear her half the time. It would have been nice to receive some of the cultural background on each of the sights inside the bus where we could hear better. Overall, it was OK. Very rushed but the sites were beautiful.

Our tour to Nara was very good, and the the visit to the Kasuga Shrine was a highlight despite the many thousands of school children who were visiting. Our tour guide was very informative and took time to make sure we could all hear his commentary. We especially liked the deer wandering around the park in the Todaiji Park. What a beautiful spot!

The trip was awesome. The deer are so polite, they bowed when you fed them deer cookies cost 150 yen each. When you signaled them to bow, they did. Wherever I went in Japan, there were 0 beggars. Tokyo has 12 million people, but I found no beggars. It's amazing. The trip was well worth it.

Nara was a fun side trip. The deer are very friendly but a few are aggressive when they know you have food. If you are spending a few days in Kyoto, I would definitely recommend an afternoon to Nara.

Words can't sum up the almost eerie beauty of Kasuga Shrine and how amazing Todaiji temple and its statues and buddha all are! Our guide went at a good pace not too slow but not too fast either and ..well... Nara is beautiful. Both of my travel companions and I agreed that Nara was the best part of our trip beautiful forests, deer.

The Todaiji and Kasuga Shrine were interesting, and the tour guides comments helped us understand the background and meaning of some features. But it's difficult to avoid the fact that a significant proportion of the total tour time was sitting on the bus, despite the interesting information being passed on by the guide.
