3-Day Freycinet Walking Expedition from Launceston

Launceston, Australia

Secluded bays, white sand beaches and sheer granite cliffs. This is the picturesque Freycinet National Park. Spend three days exploring this scenic part of Tasmania. Overnight in cabins on the edge of the park. This is what the Tasmanian experience is all about.

On this three day walk, you explore the Freycinet National Park on the East Coast of Tasmania and the Douglas Apsley National Park nearby. Carrying only a day pack, you will explore these spectacular National Parks. In season there are many wildflowers and wildlife abounds. Each night will be spent at simple but comfortable cabins in the village of Coles Bay, on the edge of the Freycinet National Park.

3-Day Freycinet Trek includes 2 nights accommodation in cabins, Goretex rain jacket and waterproof overpants, sleeping bag with inner sheet, National Park fees, all meals, bus transfers and secure storage for excess luggage.

Day 1: Launceston / Douglas Apsley National Park / Coles Bay (L, D)

Meet at 8:30am for gear check and briefing. A scenic drive east from Launceston takes you to the Douglas Apsley National Park, where you walk the Apsley Gorge circuit, a picturesque walk featuring Oyster Bay Pines, sheer cliffs and a tranquil rock pool fed by miniature waterfalls. This park is the largest area of undisturbed dry sclerophyll forest remaining in Tasmania. You overnight in cabins in the village of Coles Bay.

Overnight Accommodation: Cabins

Day 2: Coles Bay / Freycinet National Park / Coles Bay (B, L, D)

Visit Freycinet National Park for a full day walk, discovering the secluded bays, white sand beaches and sheer granite cliffs on your walk to Wineglass Bay. You have the opportunity to see many bird and mammal species, such as the Bennetts wallaby, Tasmanian Pademelon, wombat, black cockatoo, swift parrot and green rosella. After lunch you continue your circuit walk via the Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach and Lemana Lookout, a small rocky headland with great southerly views of the Peninsula and Schouten Island. Tonight you overnight again at Coles Bay.

Overnight Accommodation: Cabins

Day 3: Coles Bay / Launceston (B, L)

Today you have the opportunity to walk toward the summit of Mt Amos for panoramic views of mountain and coast. This is a rugged walk and most of the ascent route is on bare rock. An alternative walk is to explore the remote and often deserted Friendly Beaches, including a visit to Saltwater Lagoon where large numbers of black swans and other waterfowl can be seen. After lunch, you return to Launceston via Campbelltown, arriving at approximately 5:00pm.
