Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Tour and Exhibition

London, United Kingdom

Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition is the world's largest exhibition devoted to Shakespeare and the London in which he lived and worked. Housed beneath the reconstructed Globe Theatre on London's Bankside, the exhibition explores the remarkable story of the Globe, and brings Shakespeare's world to life using a range of interactive displays and live demonstrations.

Visit the exciting and often dangerous world of Elizabethan London where in 1599, Bankside was the entertainment center of the capital packed with gambling dens, brothels, bear-baiting pits and theaters. Ordinary people flocked to see Shakespeare's plays and they laughed, cried, shouted abuse at the actors, ate and drank during the performances.

As a visitor to the Exhibition you'll discover how shows were produced in the theaters of Shakespeare's time, from writing and rehearsals to music, dance and performance. Learn about the traditional crafts and techniques used during the process of rebuilding the Globe and find out how special effects were produced in Shakespeare's time - from thunder and lightning to flying on stage and realistic blood and gore.

Listen to recordings from some of the most Shakespearean performances ever or join the cast and add your own voice to a scene recorded by Globe actors. Create your own Shakespearean phrases in the word jungle, watch a sword-fighting display and browse the costume collection, where you can find out about the extraordinary methods used in creating clothes 400 years ago.

A visit to the Exhibition includes a guided tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre where storytellers take you on a fascinating half-hour tour of the auditorium. Journey through time to Elizabethan London with their colourful tales of the 1599 theater experience as well as the reconstruction process of the 1990's and how the wooden 'o' works today as an imaginative and experimental theatrical space.

Afternoon Tea Upgrade Option

Before or after your visit why not indulge yourself with a quintessentially British Afternoon Tea served at the Swan Brasserie or Bar at the Globe Theatre? Here you can enjoy stunning views of the River Thames while savouring a delicious Afternoon Tea, complete with a choice of teas, sandwiches and cakes (see sample menu in itinerary section below).

Firstly, the exhibition is a great way to see the context around London theater during the time of Shakespeare. You get a great sense of what life was like back then, and why people loved the theatre. And then the tour of the actual theater is amazing with a interesting tour guide. It is really fascinating to see how the theater would have looked when Shakespeare's plays were originally being performed there. A real London experience!

We went in the morning on this tour and had a great time! Our tour guide was really animated and gave us a bunch of information about the history of the theater. She seemed to really love acting and what she did. We got to watch an acting class on stage and just enjoy this magnificent theater. A definite must-see!

The Globe was one of our (my 25-year-old daughter) favorite tours. Very interesting, wonderful/humorous/informative guide. We wish we had stayed for the play that afternoon. We missed our assigned day by 5 minutes but they let us come back a few days later.

Amazing building with fascinating history - well worth a visit. Tour guide good and entertaining - would question some of his 'facts' though: Shakespeare invented the words 'gossip', 'monument' and 'zany'. Not so sure. Threw the rest of his commentary into doubt somewhat. Our tour included afternoon tea at the Swan next door - would not recommend it for the money. Again, amazing building with amazing views; perfect situation. Tea somewhat pretentious and not particularly nice - egg mayonnaise in very sweet brioche roll, open ham on horseradish and some unknown mush on bread. Didn't complain; just left most of savouries. Very attentive, professional young lady serving us almost made up for it.

An excellent guide who gave us a very entertaining talk; unfortunately it was pouring with rain which rather spoiled things. The museum was very interesting.

We are a middle aged couple. We have been to London several times but had never visited the theatre. We can say we really enjoyed the visit. Our guide was very passionate about the theatre and delivered the commentary in an enjoyable way. The reconstructed theatre is great to see and helped us envisage what theatre going must have been like back in the days when the theatre flourished. It is wonderful to see that so many people are committed to keeping the legacy going. We would recommend the tour.

We were very impressed with the theatre and exhibition. The guide we had was informative without being boring. It is impressive how the early English were able to accomplish so much with so little.

As a former English major, seeing Shakespeare's Globe Theater was at the top of my "to do" list while visiting London! The theater is beautiful, and the tour guide was very informative. I think I took nearly 100 photos of the theater alone! lol I was also extremely grateful that they let me use my ticket two days later than I'd originally booked it for. I highly recommend this excursion and will be using Viator for my future excursions.

Our daughter's school teacher told her to go - as penance for missing school! So the whole family had to go along under sufferance. As it turned out, we all felt it was interesting and worth the time and effort. The tour guides are very informative and full of intersting information.

Came well before the last tour but were rushed through. Our tour guide did provide an admirable amount of information on the Globe, and my family appreciated her thoroughness. One suggestion for this tour is to offer an opportunity to purchase tickets to a production in conjunction with the tour.

Worth doing. There was a rehearsal going on when I was there, so it was a bit of a constraint. If I had more time, I would have gone back to see a play there. That would be fun! This tour will give you the information you need should you decide to do that. Interesting, of course, in its own right.

Wow what a neat looking open air theatre. Dress warm during winter months viewing. You are outside when touring the actual theatre. Great guides too. The shop was fun! Bought a mask. The hot mull wine was a nice welcome drink coming in from the cold. Very friendly people. The extra exhibits although few, were good. Stay long enough to watch them show what it takes for a women to get dressed. All the different elements are demonstrated. You can walk from the London Eye to numerous museums sites, and to the Globe theatre and back. Nice long walk along river bank. Entertainment along the way and food stops.

The theatre is located on the south bank of the Thames, adjacent to the new Tate Modern art museum. Access it by crossing the Millennium Bridge from Blackfriars. It's a beautiful beginning to a very interesting tour. The exhibition is excellent, with a good combination of displays that cater to visitors of all ages. The tour of the theatre is equally good just make sure that a play isn't starting soon or else the tour might be cut short.
