Toledo Half-Day or Full-Day Trip from Madrid

Madrid, Spain

Spend a morning, afternoon or full day in Toledo, Spain's medieval capital and a treasure trove of El Greco artworks. You'll discover a glorious city filled with amazing medieval architecture, and take a walk into the past along its cobblestone alleyways.

A highlight of any visit to Toledo is seeing the famous paintings by the 16th-century master, El Greco. Toledo was the setting for many of El Greco's artworks, and a tour highlight is The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the church of St. Tome.

Toledo is a National Monument to Spain's art and history, combining Arabic, Mudejar Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Surrounded by the River Tajo, the atmospheric walled town is crammed with churches and museums.

Tour highlights include the amazing 13th-century cathedral, the medieval castle and Santa Maria La Blanca Synagogue. You'll also visit St. Tome Church, San Juan of the Kings and the Victorio Macho Museum. If you choose the full-day tour, your visit includes a panoramic tour of Toledo.

Toledo itself was amazing and I highly recommend visiting the city. The tour guide was not so great at making sure everyone knew where she was/where she was going, and in a busy city with several tour groups that can be kind of a stressful thing. The itinerary was pretty interesting, and Toledo was beautiful, but I'm not sure the price should be as high as it is...

The guide provided good information. Although we visited many sites, we spent very little time at any of them. Shopping was limited to two locations - the first a brief rest stop and the second at a prearranged store that included a short demonstration of the Toledo craftsmen. I ate lunch with the group; however in retrospect, I would have preferred to spend time wandering the streets and shops in Toledo.

Our tour to Toledo was very good. We enjoyed seeing the cathedral with El Greco's paintings displayed and the town itself. Our guide was excellent.

Great tour, but check with Julia travel to confirm the tour, The day we booked with Viator the tour did not run on. It did run on the following day and was terrific.

The tour left and returned on time. The tour guide was pleasant but not very enthusiastic and not very open to questions. It was difficult because she had to do the tour in two languages. I have had better Viator outings.

We went on the full-day trip without lunch. Trip was well organised and not rushed. Toledo is a 'must see' place in Spain; very photogenic and lovely cathedral. We were blessed with perfect warm weather in March. There were 2 drop-off points on the return in Madrid, either outside their office at Plaza de Espana or on Gran Via.

Save your money. The guide says everything in three languages so it is hurry up and wait. L ots of fast walking over uneven terrain. Little explanation of sights to hurry along. Next time I will hire a private guide. Saw little.

The potential of a great tour was there but the guide was going through the minimal motions to check off the museums. A good guide would have detailed more history and participants. The guide showed absolutely no passion for the subject matter or the tour in general. We would have been much better off using our Lonely Plant guidebook versus the very weak presentation. Count us as very disappointed with the guide but the itinerary had exceptional potential. With another guide this could be a good tour.

Excellent value for money as the trip included an expert guide entry fees and the coach. The short visit provided a good taster session and those that would want could go back on their own account. Liked the timing of the 8.00 return as it coincided with the opening of restaurants.

A trip to Toledo is recommended when travelling to Madrid. We did not have much time so we took the half day to Toledo plus 3 hours afternoon bus tour in Madrid. Both trips were up to our expectations and were happy with our choice. The only thing we would leave out (if were given the choice), was the stop at the souvenir shop in Toledo and the stop at Rock cafe in Madrid.

We were very disappointed with our tour guide. She was not very friendly, she was difficult to understand and spoke too softly. We wanted to do lunch on our own but there were no maps provided and it was very difficult to find the location of the bus after weaving through the narrow streets of Toledo. ( We took the full-day trip so we had to join the group for lunch .) The afternoon stops were not worth the extra time. I would have loved to have spent the afternoon seeing more of Toledo.

Comprehensive tour of Toledo for such a short visit. We wouldn't have seen so much had we gone on our own. We could have done without the factory visit. Originally we hadn't signed up for the lunch but found that we were not being left in the center of town but rather had walked over a bridge to the outskirts where the bus was taking the group to lunch. They said that they would pick us up in an hour. Since it was a nasty day we went with the group and the lunch took much more than an hour. Lunch turned out nice and the whole day was good.

Guide was disappointing - disengaged and seemed to be just going through the motions. A shame because with a good guide this would be a great tour, snapshot of Tolendo if you don't have time for a full day. More time to explore would be good.

We were rushed around Toledo, no free time, lots of time wasted in fairly boring souvenir place at end of trip where few people bought, stuff was gthe same as in Toledo and not very attractive anyway. This time could have been better used allowing us more time in Toledo. We could also have started before 9.45. Tour guide clear but impression that she had done it so many times that she was bored and had no interest in interacting with us. Those not taking lunch were marched all the way back to the coach whereas she could have sorted us out in Toledo and left us there giving us more time. But Toledo itself is magnificent!

The bus trip was okay (we got a chance to sleep and there wasn't much countryside to comment on.) The guide did a good job of moving us through the sites at Toledo even though the streets were narrow and hilly.

I would have been happier if Viator had been clear that this trip is TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for those who have any difficulty climbing hills, walking on damp or wet cobblestones, or climbing stairs. Toledo is not an accessible city-- it is very hilly, and the sites visited require climbing and descending many hills and steps, and walking over uneven cobblestones in between. My wife, who walks with a cane, decided to stay on the bus after the guide told her that it would be a bad idea to attempt the tour, but the driver required her to get off the bus and wait in a parking lot (nowhere near any sort of shelter or even a coffee shop) in near-freezing temperatures for three hours until the bus returned. Unbelievable, but definitely true.

It is a nice tour. The location to pick up the tour is not well explained on the info sheet. It is close to the location noted on the info sheet but not exactly there and if you are not familiar with the area, you may easily miss it. The bus and it driver were very nice and comfortable. Our tour guid was a nice lady but did not really speak English that well. Accordingly she did not provide us with a lot of info. Overall it is an okay tour, but it can be better organized.

I did the full day and I cannot see how you could do it in half a day as it felt quite rushed. We dashed round places at quite a rate, I would have liked longer in each place, except the sword/craft outlet, which no one I spoke to liked much, I'd rather have spent the time elsewhere. There was a bit of hanging around too which wasted time, i.e. we left Madrid later than expected. But apart from that, the guide was good, the price was reasonable and Toledo was wonderful. Many thanks.

Well worth a visit! Lovely half day trip to Toledo. You learn alot about Spanish history in this region. The rain dampened things but we still had a nice visit. It would be nice to have at least a break to be able to shop in some of the nice little Spanish shops within the area.

I had the full day trip and it was great. Don't know what you could see in half day. Let the tourist know of all the walking. You need radios for the tour guide and tourist, so you can listen to all the details when you aren't next to the guide.

This was a wonderful day trip. We took the 5 hour trip and it was ENOUGH because it is quite a bit of walking. We even got some shopping in but almost lost the group. The tour guide was courteous and spoke fluent English. Toleda was a beautiful old city...just breathtaking. I recommend this trip.

Toledo is a beautiful city and worth the time and money to tour it. However shopping time can be catchy because is only at the end in a pre-set place that the tour goes to. I took the shorter tour so maybe the 8 hour one give people yime to visit the little shops around the city. From what I saw there was much variety of items and prices seemed better. If I go back, I'll definitely need 2 hours to shop around. We saved money by using Viator. We saved around $400 for a group of 11.
