Berber Trails 4WD Day Trip from Marrakech

Marrakech, Morocco

Follow ancient Berber Trails across the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech into the Moroccan past. From the valleys to the mountain summits, you will discover the faces, smiles and traditional lifestyle of Morocco, away from the busy cities.

The Moroccan landscape is not only majestic, it dictates the lives of the men and women who live in this region. Traveling by 4WD lets you get where the large tour buses can't go. Depending on the season, you may discover lush slopes covered with sheep or snow-covered summits.

Your journey to the secrets of Morrocco will take you over the Atlas mountains by the trails with an opportunity to take pictures. Arriving in the Berber village of Tahanaout you will have a guided visit of the mills and be served the traditional mint tea by the locals. In the village of Imlil located in the famous Ourika Valley you will be served lunch and enjoy a photo stop.

Really enjoyed the day. Transport excellent with careful driver but would've helped a lot had he been able to speak some English. Disappointed with this, the English speaking guide was in another vehicle. Could've done without the pottery stop but these always seem inevitable. Berber house and restaurant great. Scenery amazing.

Had a fantastic day out - sun, snow, scenery (yes, snow!) what more could you ask for? Our guide was great although the real hero of the day was the driver who negotiated the winding mountain roads without battling an eye. Definitely recommend this trip as a break from the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh and a way of seeing another side of Morocco.

The trip began with short stop at a pottery workshop, followed by a beautiful drive in the mountains with spectacular scenery. _br/_ The next stop was at a Berber home which was fascinating with mint tea and delicious fresh home made bread. We strongly recommend you take a very good handful of small denomination Dirham for the many local children you will meet on the way or at the very least plenty of sweets. _br/_ We were then driven to our lunch destination in the next valley which was rather disorganised and of average quality unfortunately. _br/_ The afternoon concluded with an interesting visit to an Argan oil producer.._br/_ The only downside to this tour was that we had booked an English speaking tour but much of it was not spoken in English during the afternoon and little explanation or translation was offered._br/_ However, overall we would recommend this tour.

We stayed a week in Marrakech with this trip was one of the day trips we had booked. The Atlas mountain region is certainly very different to Marrakech and it is worth the trip to go and see the differences for yourself. I would recommend this trip, however, with us travelling at the end of October we did not have the best of weather and it did impact on the whole experience. It was cloudy and raining most of the day. A real shame as we did not really see much so my review is most likely not as positv as it should be. The visit to a Berber house in the mountains was the highlight of the day for me. Sure, they probably have tourists stopping over on a daily basis (good on them for making a little bit of money off us!) but it is still their house and they let us Western tourists march in and take a look around. They served us mint tea and homemade bread (super yummy btw). It was pretty eye-opening with how little people live there and they still have a smile on their face. How different to our world. The guide was very nice and he answered any questions we had. Most of the trip involved being stuck in a 4x4 with the occasional photo stops. If you are staying in Marrakech for more than a couple of days I would recommend this trip.

A nice tour spoiled by a fellow passenger who wouldn't shut up and let us enjoy the views. Also our driver didnt speak a word of English which was a shame as it was an 'english' tour; the driver did his best, telling us about what we were seeing on route in French but we could only understand a bit of it. There were about 6 cars of people on this tour, and when we stopped at view points and for the meal with the whole group there was an english speaking guide. However we found that some of the other cars had the english speaking guide or english speaking drivers so we felt a bit cheated.

I think that we got some really good pictures of the region and the people. It was really cool to see a different perspective outside of Marrakech. My issue was that we were all in different cars. The tour guide only explained stuff when we got out, so we only learned 1 or 2 things at each stop, as opposed to being in a tour bus and having the guide speak the whole time about history, customs, etc. I think the whole trip of what we saw could have been condensed to a half day taxi trip. Lunch lasted about 1.5 hours, which was pretty normal for Marrakech, but be aware. The bottom line is, we took a lot of pictures, but don't feel like we really learned a lot of stuff. On the trip, we went inside a Berber House and had tea and we went to a place where women made Argan oil. Everything else was stops for pictures.

This is one of the most expensive tours on offer in Marrakech but unfortunately it wasn’t value for money – for the main reason that our driver did not speak any word in English (except saying ‘ok’ and counting up to 4)! The itinerary itself through the Atlas Mountains was quite nice, we even stopped at a Berbers’ village to see how they prepare their traditional tea, but the main reason for choosing this (semi-private) tour was that we would benefit from having a more personalised experience – which we didn't get. The group was about 20 people split over five 4WDs. Although none of the drivers spoke any English, there was a group leader who had a basic knowledge of English – but he stayed with the same group throughout the day (I’m sure if you ask what they thought of the tour, their opinion will be different from mine)! For the rest of us, the ‘solution’ was to stop the cars three or four times for photos, where we would all come out and the tour leader would give us a short explanation about where we were and what’s coming up next. These 20 minutes of guided tour - out of 8 hours of awkward silence between us and the driver - do not qualify for good value for money!

This was a good trip to see how the Berbers live. Watch out if you have problems with heights as the road through the mountains has no barriers and there are shear drops to the valleys below. The scenery was incredible.

I really enjoyed our tour and it is well worth doing. The only thing i would say is that our tour guide spoke English but depending on the other passengers a lot of French can be spoken. On our tour there were 9 French speakers, so i felt a lot more was said in French than English but i was told by the guide that he was just responding to questions and that we weren't missing out. Overall, the scenery is beautiful and the Berber people very friendly. It is a nice day out of busy Marrakech.
