Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Embark on a guided tour of Berchtesgaden, Hitler's mountain retreat and the southern headquarters of the Nazi party on a full day coach trip from Munich. Eagle's Nest is a mountain top lodge built by the Nazis, and is a fascinating sight of historical significance. Located at 6,148 feet (1,834 meters) on top of Mt Kehlstein, the lodge has some of Germany's most amazing views of the Alps mountain range. Ironically, Hitler suffered from vertigo and rarely took pleasure in the views.

Due to the World War II bombings by the Royal Air Force, there is little evidence left of Hitler and the Nazi party's presence, however Eagle's Nest still stands.

From mid May to October, you will have the option to take a bus ride up the mountain to see Eagle's Nest for yourself. The last 390 feet (120 meters) of the trip is in a brass-clad elevator. During the winter months or during inclement weather when access to Eagle's Nest is restricted, you will instead visit the world famous Salt Mines. Wearing traditional mining gear you will descend into the depths of the mine where you can see glowing salt grottoes and a subterranean salt lake.

A fascinating day out especially as the weather was just perfect. Our guide (Bridget?)was charming and very knowledgeable and she even had a Band Aid for me when I tripped and fell, picking up a little souvenir of Eagle's Nest.I would recommend this trip to anyone.

This sites were wonderful, but this felt more like organized transportation than an actual tour. Upon arriving at the Eagle's Nest, we were rushed to get to the top and come back down to the bus. We ate a wonderful lunch, but it was further down the mountain as opposed to eating at the EN Restaurant like we were under the impression we would be doing (which would have allowed for less of a rush and a more relaxed visit). I loved the sites; having self-transported with some printed facts and information about the area, however, may have been a cheaper and more relaxing experience.

We didn't see much of Berchtesgaden, as we only drove through, but the Eagle's Nest had the best view of the valley below! It was a sunny, warm day and we had a cold beer at the restaruant. Wonderful trip.

Not your fault, but on the day chosen the Eagle's Nest was snowed up, so we went to the salt mine instead.

was nice but Viator never told us we would have to pay an additional fee for a bus to the eagles nest. I was on a budget and didn't have money to spare.

An amazing view from the top of the muntains. However, the tour group was a big disappointment. Another one of those run by a "Sight seeing" company. Got to see the sights, bujt left on our own once we got there. No history given at the Eagles Nest. The guide told us we could find some history on the wall inside. Problem was, it was all in German..........We had a nice lunch at the top and a nice walk around the property. When we got back, we wre told of the history by someone else who had gone on a different tour. Sorry wem missed all the info. It would have made a nice tour. All in all, we were quite disappointed in the tours booked .

My sons really wanted this trip on our itinerary and, although we are all very glad we went so we can 'tick it off' our list, it was a little disappointing. The Eagles Nest itself is now a restaurant. We all wish it had been kept as original for us to see. However, we do realise economics probably comes into it. It took a whole day out of our visit to Munich though and maybe that's worth thinking about...

The tour was great. The guide was very informative and showed an interesting DVD about the Eagle's Nest. One tip: Make sure you sit on the right hand side as you go to Berchtesgaden. It has the better views along the Alpine Road. Unfortunately when we came back, we went a different way which means people on the other side of the bus (me) never got to get a good view of the beautiful scenery.

The drive to and from Berchtesgaden is long, but the bus was comfortable and the drive was pleasant. The guide was knowledgeable. The documentation center and bunkers are worth the visit upon coming down from the Eagle's Nest.

The trip was very nice. But the tour guide was rude and appeared disheveled. The three hours at the "Documentatio nCenter and Lunch" was way to long and should be cut to about 1.5 hours. And atrip to Berchtesgaden would have been nice, since all we did was drive through the area.

The building itself is relatively small and unimpressive. However, the construction is impressive along with infrastructure (elevator, roadway, bunker, etc.). Breathtaking views.

A great tour with a good driver and guide. The tour was everything we expected and the time given at "The Eagle's Nest" was sufficient to take in the sights. A great tour and we can thoroughly recommend it - we are very glad that we did it.

Well worth going to, it felt like we didn't have much time there but really the tour guide (Charles) was just very efficient at getting things done on time (turned out time is of the essence if you want to see the stunning view from the top with no clouds). There is an on-site WW2 exhibition and underground bunker complex that really made my day as a history lover; it was called Documentation Obersalzberg so I thought it was just an archive but went in anyway for a look and was pleasantly surprised. The museum itself is in German but you cantake an audio guide or go in just for the bunker! The Eagle's Nest itself is just a restaurant now-a-days but it is still very cool to visit the holiday house of Hitler. The drive between Munich and Berchtesgaden has beautiful views of the countryside and interesting things that the tour guide will point out and tell you about.

Marcos was very informative on the bus and we really enjoyed him as a tour guide however, when we got to the top and exited the elevator we ALL needed guidance. Everyone we saw from the bus was asking us where to go to see something besides the restaurant. THE BUS DRIVER WAS AWESOME AND DOES NOT GET ENOUGH CREDIT._br/_ thanks

Great tour up in the alps with a view that has to be seen to be believed. The house is literally perched on the edge of a cliff with the only acess via an elevator. Would liked to have at least seen a driveby of more of Berchtesgaden but that was not to be. If you have the time ,don't miss this day trip.

This trip was ruined from the start when I was informed by the tour leader that another 17 euro per person was required to actually get up to see the Eagle's Nest - that is, over and above the 47 euro per person already paid. Several other tourists expressed both surprise and dismay. 47 euros per person is a lot of money to cover only bus travel to the carpark below the site plus a guide. In order to visit the Documentation Centre yet another 3 euro per person was required. All in all the tour/tour costs had been deliberately misleading. I shall recommend to all who ask that they should NOT take this tour.

Seeing the Eagle's nest was on my bucket list of things I had to see at least once. While in Germany we did four Viator tours and found this to be less enjoyable than the others. Maybe it was because the weather was bad but I felt like it was just too much time sitting on a bus. Glad I did it but I wouldn't bother to go again.

The tour was a little lacking in historical facts, the country side was pretty and it would have been nice to pending some time in the town of Berchtesgaden. Also there was no information on the fact that we needed to pay cash for entrance to the Eagles Nest and Documentation center.

What a fun trip! A guided tour was a first for us, but it turned out to be maybe the highlight of our visit to Munich. The bus was a very nice, comfortable, and quiet double decker with W/C. Our guide, Uta, was terrific, very nice and spoke very good English. She gave good information along the way, and seemed to really enjoy showing people around. The trip itself was amazing - the countryside on the way is absolutely breathtaking. The Eagle's Nest itself is small, but has a restaurant and patio seating, which on a nice day would be just about one of the best beer spots around. Hiking around the rocks above the Eagle's Nest is a must.

The tour and bus trip were very enjoyable. Some ideas for improvement- the guide should do a paragraph in German and then a paragraph in English- alternate sentences are annoying. The guide didn't give us an accompanied tour of the building which would have helped us. He also suggested we not eat at the tea house restaurant . We wish we had not taken his advice. Overall it was worthwhile.

The view from eagles nest are amazing, unfortunetly there is not much to see inside as it has been turned into a resturant and the US soilders took everything after the war. The marble fire place is the only picture point with the soliders names scrached into it. After eagles nest we were taken to a document centre, nothing in english so reccomend getting audio guide. The bunker underneath the document centre was the highlight of the tour for us. Lunch stop was very nice food was great.

This tour is expensive but given the remote location understandably so. In addition to what you pay for the tour, there is an another 16 euro charge per person to actually get up the mountain to the Eagles Nest. It might be better if this were incorporated into the fee as several passengers seemed to be taken off guard by the supplemental charge. Also, if you are the type that gets motion sick on buses be aware that the last 45 minutes of the trip are on local (non Autobahn) roads that twist and wind through the mountains.

The tour was very informative and helpful. Parts of the tour lacked communications such as when the bus would pick us up and what to look for. We had to guess at times what to do next. I think it would be helpful if there was more information about the tour so we understand completely what we are signing up for. I felt we were not given information about additional charges that arose such as fees to Eagle's Nest and other fees. What I originally paid for I thought would cover the whole tour. So my final assessment is the lack of communications about exactly what to expect.

The Eagles Nest is very nice. My second time there. However, the bus driver was very bad and I'm not sure why "Berchtesgaden" is the partial name of this tour. We drove through it on the bus for less than 3 minutes. We were dropped off at Obersalzburg (sp?) for 2 hours to walk through a 5 minutes bunker and sit on our butts at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. My suggestion is to take a train to Berchtesgaden (Like i did in '03) and from the train station catch a bus to the Eagles Nest. I cannot believe they even mention Berchtesgaden in the title of the tour. VERY MISLEADING! 2 out of 10 stars...DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.

Be warned that the 'Nest' is now just a restaurant with very little historical information available. The tour guide is next to useless as there was no tour of anything during the day, we were left to explore by ourselves, which is fine but this was billed as a walking tour.

This is a thoroughly delightful day, in spite of the early start and 10.5 hours. The visit to Eagle's Nest, the Documentation Center and the views of southern Germany and northern Austria are not to be missed. It's a history buff's dream if you are into WWII. The only negative was the tour guide. While he had a great personality, he shared very little historical information with the group....nothing about the history of Eagle's Nest, the Nazi regime, Obersalzberg. It was a pity since the area is so rich in history. He was too busy talking about himself and obsessing about logistics on buses, elevators, meeting times, etc. That was a shame.

We were unable to get up to Eagle's Nest due to weather conditions. The tour guide was not easy to understand as he had a very thick German accent. No refunds were offered but an alternative option to see Salt Mines was given but only after the bus had left Munich.
