Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Small Group Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Venture out of Munich by local transport for a comprehensive small group tour through Dachau Concentration Camp and memorial site. An authorized guide will share important information concerning the desperate survivors who'd been tortured and exploited throughout the course of World War II. Today, Dachau Memorial Site is a place of memory, of pilgrimage and of education and makes for an illuminating day trip from Munich.

Just outside the medieval town center of Dachau, a Memorial Site stands on the grounds of the former concentration camp. This was the 'parent' camp. Dachau was the 'Academy of Terror', the originator, role-model and training ground for the vast order of brutality that spread over half of Europe in the wake of the armies of the Third Reich, and which ultimately culminated in history's greatest crime, the Final Solution.

2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of most Nazi concentration camps in the closing months of the Second World War. All over an exhausted Europe, advancing Allied soldiers set free the desperate survivors of camp after camp. The diseased, the starving, the barely alive emerged to tell a shocked and disbelieving world of the full horror of a network of systematized murder and degradation that had first been set in motion in 1933.

While each camp was responsible for its own particular form of barbarism, what distinguished Dachau is that almost everything that happened in the system as a whole happened at some level there. Almost every category of victim passed through its infamous Arbeit macht frei (Freedom through Work) gate, German dissidents, outspoken clergymen, Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, Jews, Polish civilians, all in all the citizens of some 34 nations. Today's Memorial Site combines the historical authenticity of the original environment and its many surviving buildings with the function of a modern exhibition center. It is a place of memory, of pilgrimage and of education.

Excellent. Several people had told me not to book a tour - to do it on my own. I disagree - the few extra Euros was worth it. Steve was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable and provided tidbits of information one could not get going through on their own. Definitely worth the trip and fee.

This was a great quick 4.5 hour trip well worth the time. Nothing can replace the experience of standing within the fenced walls of the Concentration camp with its ominous history surrounding you. Our tour guide Steve had a wealth of knowledge and shared many stories with us. It was good to get a tour guide with so much respect and passion on the subject matter. I would highly recommend this tour and the meeting place is conveniently located within the main train station.

I'm sure there are really good tour guides on this trip, but we did not have a good experience. Having been on an excellent walking tour in Berlin and a tour to Nueswanstein, this was horribly miserable. The guide was very slow in starting and when he did it was asking the group how they felt about various things. I wanted to be eduacated and not interested in group opinions and feelings. We left the group and ended up with another tour guide who was educated on Dachau. Also, the 'small' group turned out to be 50 people! They divided that into 2 groups, but still, 25 people in a tour is NOT small. We were very disappointed

Excellent presentation by a well versed historian with great expertise. This is more than a stroll around the compound showing you the remains of the artifacts of the camp. You are immersed in a total historical review of the event leading uo to the camp, the realities of the camp and perspectives of post camp reactions of all concerned. No punches are pulled in this presentation, even though the guides are trained in historical accuracy. If you can't understand how something like this could have happened, take the tour. Eat before you come, come prepared to be enlightened.

Content of trip was very positive, however the size of the group at 60 people was anything but a "small group". This marred the experience, even with the group being split into 2 groups of 30 at the memorial. I would not have booked if I had known it would be such a large group.

Very worthwhile tour package. Although entry to the camp memorial site is free, it is very convenient to have a guide make all of the arrangements and offer historical background context and event explanation. Tour left Haubtbahnhof station via train to Dachau station. From there we had to grab a bus (#826 I believe) for a ride following the old road to the camp - probably a 10 minute ride. At the site the guide (Alun from London) guided the group (14 of us on this tour) to various sites to explain things. Tours enter through the original Tower B iron gate and into the roll call grounds. The Guide took us throughout the 1 sq km site, allowed time to see the 22 minute film, and adequate time to see reconstructed barracks, crematoriums, gas chamber, original bunker building with solitary confinement cells, and left us with the last half hour or so to browse through the museum displays on our own. This is not adequate time to see the entire museum thoroughly, but I recommend buying the square blue book for 15 euros that has 200+ pages of pictures, stories, etc in it. The book also contains a CD that contains the entire library exhibit boards and photos - and it is really well done CD. great buy. The book can be purchased at the bookstore near the camp entrance, or back at the Rialto Tours office (for the same price). This tour is a thoughtful and moving experience and should not be missed. The price is a great value, and the guide was well worth tipping. Enjoy!

Fantastic Tour. The guide did a wonderful job giving an objective tour and painting a picture of the role this camp played in history. Extremely informative tour with sufficient time at the end to 'self-guide' around the camp. Transportation was all taken care of by the guide which made this visit even easier.

Very good guide Knowledgable, English - so language was good, obviously knew A LOT about not only the site, but the era. I do wonder if you had the audio guides if you would have found out as much which may have been cheaper - but not having to worry about what train bus to take was great! Good balance of guided tour free time on the site. Definitely recommend. OH - BE ONE TIME, unless you want to make it to Munich on your own.. Our group left 8 people who didn't meet up on time.
