Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Hidden in the seclusion of the Bavarian mountains, King Ludwig II built two of his dream castles, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. This trip from Munich shows you both of these extraordinary castles, the legacy of of Bavaria's fairytale King. Capture the grandeur of these castles and the picturesque mountain scenery of Bavaria in one magical day.

Departing Munich, visit the smallest of three royal castles, Linderhof, which was built by King Ludwig II during the 19th century as a hunting lodge. Built in French Rococo style, the castle has a Moorish pavilion which can be visited during your two hour stay. You have the option to join a guided tour of the interior of Linderhof.

After departing Linderhof, you will have a short shopping stop in Oberammergau, world-famous for its woodcarvers, richly painted houses (Luftl-paintings) and Passion Play.

On the approach to Neuschwanstein, it will quickly become clear as to why this magnificent neo-Romanesque style castle is the most well known castle in the world. It appears through the mist like something out of a fairytale, and you will not be surprised to hear that the man who conceived its design - King Ludwig II, was considered quite eccentric. If it all seems very familiar, it may be because the castle was the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.

You will have four hours to explore the grounds of Neuschwanstein, and the option of joining a guided tour of the interior of the castles if you wish.

Not a bad tour, not really my type of thing. Linderhof is gaudy, Neuschwanstein is pretty neat. Oberammagau is a nice town, but we did not get enough time there. Tour pushed you to eat at specific places, and buy at specific places. My advice, don't listen. Much cheaper places abound. Go up the hill to eat at Neuschwanstein, couple nice little cafes up there. Go to Mary's bridge if you can. Stunning views.

Even though this was a great day, all little more help getting up to the Neuschwanstein Castle would have been appreciated. It is a very long and quite steep walk and if you have any trouble breathing in high altitudes or struggle walking up or down hill take the horse and cart._br/_ Both castles are well worth seeing and we loved Oberammagow - charming town.

The bus ride was fine our tour guide was very nice and very informative, we still had to pay for the admission to the castles, and the horse drawn carriage is a rip-off they only take you about half way up, I was with my 80 year old father and he barely made it up to the castle and then couldn't do the 300 stairs in the castle. It is an amazing view and a nice trip but, wouldn't suggest it if you are not in good shape.

Very well organized and planned. Our tour guide knows a lot and everything went smooth._br/_ From my personal point of view, honestly, I would cut a little time for oberamangau. It's a very beautifu traditional place for souvenirs, but i think it would be better to cut 10 or 15 minutes from that part and add them to the castles, coz we barely had time for pictures. I would reccomend this tour: YES.

Without having a car, this is a good way to see the Castles. More walking than I expected. Not long enough in Oberammergau. It was a nice tour - just beware - LOTS of steep walking.

This is a good tour. It costs less than most of the others; and covers more. Tour guide was very conscientious and made the effort to see that everyone was properly attended.

Beautiful scenery, the drive alone is worth the tour! Castles were amazing but crowded. Be ready to get a workout in, it's quite a hike to get to Neuschwanstein and about 300 steps inside the castle but totally worth it!

We were there in early March before the rush of tourist season. Everything about the tour was enjoyable (except it was a little cold). Our guide was knowledgeable, the driver was proficient and the sites were incredible. Do bring cash.

Beautiful places to visit. The bus was super comfortable and the road trip was very enjoyably. My only issue is that we were not told before hand that there would be extensive walking and climbing stairs in both places. I have knee problems and was not able to visit either place from inside due to the walking involved. I feel that we should have been warned about this so that we could have better prepared for it.

Tour was on time and very organised, however spent time around the castle and at Oberammergau was very short. Other option would be to discard the meal in the Hotel and go round the small beautiful village. Considering that there was a 40 minute walk to the castle was also very frustrated as it was snowing. Anyway nice picturesque castle!!

The trip was excellent (was planned and departured in time). However it would be more cosy to mention the duration of the trip, because the real time took more than 6 hours.

Ok this was awesome. We did the Salzburg tour the day before via train. It was nice to be on a bus. Linderhof was cool but the best part of the tour was the too brief stop in small town of Oberammergau. We only got about 45 minutes to do some shopping but I think we should have gotten a couple hours. LOVED IT. Then off to Hohenschwangau to see Castle Neuschwanstein. You can either walk up, take the bus ($1.80 Euro one way), or take a horse drawn carriage for $6 Euro). There is a bridge you can go to first before your tour and a lot of great spots for photos. You can't take photos in the castle. And even though King Ludwig never finished construction of the inside the of the castle it's worth seeing. The tour is pretty quick but you make 2 other stops on this tour so it still takes all day.

I LOVED IT! It was the best amount of euros I've ever given in my life! and also the money I gave at the bus for the entrances to the castles. The staff was super nice and the place amaizing, and you have enough time to see everything and take pics (i like taking my time in photos) and we saw it in the snow, which is soo idyllic! I liked the castles and also the food, and the souvenirs are better than in Munich._br/_ Also if I were you, I'd choose the Hop On Hop Off with this company, it;'s better than the one of citysightseeing, I regretted not having buying it!

Excellent tour with an effective use of your time visiting 2 or the most beautiful castles in the area. Includes and bonus-stop at Oberammerngau, an interesting village famed for the Passion-play performances that are on stage only every 10 years, being this one of those years.

Our tour was May 20th. Although cool and rainy, the mists from the mountains gave a mystical feel to the tour. Linderhof and Neuschwanstein showcase the diverse tastes of Ludwig II. Our guide Ellen kept us on time and gave us a thorough history of the region and life of this unusal and remarkable king. Thank you Ellen for a great job.

It was a very good experience and our tour guide was very friendly and informative. Even though the tour had to take a detour becaue of an accident in the highway, the tour was perfectly managed and we got ample time to spend at both the castles.

This was a great tour! The guides were informative, funny and charming. We would have liked a bit more time at Linderhof but we were not dissapointed. It was wonderful to see the countryside outside of Munich. The hills were covered in blankets of yellow rapeseed....gorgeous!

This was a really great trip, two totally different style castles in spectacular settings each as impressive inside as out, with the contrast of the souvenir shops in Oberammergau. The trip was very well organised by a very helpful guide. In addition to the guided tours, there was enough time allowed to explore the surroundings a little on our own.

Despite a rainy, cold, windy day the tour was great! The guide was extremely informative and helpful keeping 60 people organized and on time. You had enough time to take lunch or wander around the other sitesup to the bridge instead when you were at Neushwanstein.

Excellent guide and driver. Sufficient travel and visiting times. We were not too keen to see the palaces from inside and so spent all the time in the gardens and surrounding areas. We would highly recommend the trip to anyone who wish to visit these palaces

Great trip. Definetly worth going. I am happy I went on this one and not on the one where you only visit the Neushwanstein castle. I actually enjoyed the visit to Linderhof more. Neushwanstein castle is a castle, but Linderhof is a palace...very beautiful. Remember 17 euro entrance fee not included in the trip meals not included in this trip. You WILL have time to eat lunch aronud 1pm in a very nice hotel Mulan or something in the Neushwanstein village. Food was great. Bus was comfortable, has a bathroom, two floors. Be ontime. The lineup for the bus starts about half an hour before the 830 leaving time. You'll be back around 630pm to munich. The KARSTAD store is on main train station center of munich.
