Salzburg Small Group Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

Take a day trip to the home town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a guided full day rail tour from Munich to Salzburg. Considered one of the jewels in the crown of Europe, the city of Salzburg has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, framed by the majestic backdrop of the snow-capped Alps and famed for its old world glamor.

Salzburg is also one of the most popular movie tourism destinations in the world for one simple reason, The Sound of Music. With a small group (maximum 25 people), you will see sights you'll remember from the silver screen. Salzburg is one of the finest preserved medieval old towns in Europe, criss-crossed with winding streets and venerable market places and adorned with architectural monuments of the later baroque era. Piazzas and fountains, the stunning Domkirche Cathedral, palaces, gardens, churches, monasteries, confectioneries and patisseries. And towering above it all, the breathtaking 900 year old fortress Festung Hohensalzburg, the magnificent edifice that dominates the city's skyline.

Your expert guide will bring you on a train ride from Munich to Austria and back again and put their knowledge of the city and what is best to see and do at your service. We'll provide you with a map and give you a 1.5 hour orientation tour through the major sites. You'll then have 3 hours to explore the city for yourself before the return journey. We have the inside knowledge of what to see and where to go and are dedicated to helping you experience the city by the most convenient and most efficient means.

The journey to Salzburg takes approximately 2 hours by train. Germany's rail system is world renowned and this journey to the Alps is no exception. Trains are clean, comfortable and equipped with washrooms and snack bars. Feel free to walk around and chat to your fellow travellers as well as your guide, who can answer any questions about Munich and Bavaria.

Ian (sp?) was our guide and he did a great job dealing with 6 different delays and changes that happened with the tranportation to Salzburg. There was one problem after another with Germany's trains and buses, but he kept his sense of humour and kept his eyes on us to keep us together. He actually got off the train to look for me when it was getting ready to leave. He found me and we ran for the train to catch it.

This was an awesome tour and our thanks to tour guide Jeff for making it so. Jeff couldn't do enough for the group - he took the time to speak to each of us about our needs, had a wealth of knowledge of Salzburg and made the train trip and walking tour of Salzburg interesting and fun. The tour was a long day but this allowed for 3 hours to walk through the city at our leisure. Thanks Jeff for making this a memorable day for us - Dawn and Andrew

Excellent. Even for 1 day it was great. Our guide tour was great and she gave us excellent tips about the city such as a restaurant and places to go in our free hours. The restaurant was great. The oldest restaurant is Europe run by monks. I recommend this tour .

Impressed with the whole process, from the organisation, that tour guide, to the experience itself. The old section of Salzburg is a real gem, the whole area was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the markets were very busy (Sunday). Will certainly return to Salzburg and stay a few days, regretted having to depart in the late afternoon, would love to have experienced the atmosphere at night, must return. The tour is well worth the effort and gives one a great feel for the area. The outward train journey was through pleasant countryside, just North of the Alps however due to overcast skies our view was restricted. This is a tour that you just have to take, Salzburg is brilliant. Viator do an excellent job.

It's always nice to visit Salzburg but this trip wasn't my favorite. First of all, we had to jog from the Tour meeting site about 1/2 mile to the train which was more crowded than the NY subway at rush hour. After jamming ourselves into the train, we had a nice 2 hour ride to Austria. Once there, as expected, Salzburg was so crowded we couldn't move (Christmas Markets). The guide was lovely and informative but the city was just too crowded to move. Don't go during the Christmas Markets. Salzburg isn't big enough to handle the crowds.

Wasn't what we expected. Way too commercialized. If we want to shop at all the nice stores you'd find at a nice mall .... You'll love it. The tour didn't allow enough time thouh if you wanted to tour the fort.

Terrific day in Salzburg -- Maxine was a great guide. Only complaint, the weather was too cold! In hindsight, may have skipped the long lunch and spent more time seeing the town. Also enjoyed the Christmas fairs.

I really enjoyed the Salzburg Tour - it was definitely worth it, and much cheaper than going independently. Our guide, Maxine, was wonderful - very knowledgeable and friendly. The tour departed on time from the train station. Train was quite empty and very comfortable - Maxine gave us an overview of the tour as well as a map with her recommendations on what to see/do. Once at Salzburg, she took us on a walking tour visiting many of The Sound of Music sights, and she pointed out many historic buildings around town. We ended the tour in front of the oldest restaurant in Salzburg/Europe which was a wonderful place to have lunch - nice restaurant, excellent service and delicious food. We then had roughly two hours to explore Salzburg on our own. I opted to do a bit of shopping and visit some of the churches and the Mozart Museum. Two hours wasn't a lot of time so if you do want to explore Salzburg, I would suggest skipping lunch/grabbing a sandwich on the go. I was a bit worried as we went on a Sunday when all the shops were closed - to be honest, all the touristy shops/restaurants were open, so we may have benefited from there being less people around. All in all, am very glad I booked this tour.

Great tour indeed. Our tour guide, Maxine, was also great. The only inconvenience with this tour is that there is too little time in Salzburg in comparison with the time you spend travelling (plus we had problems with the train that day). Even so it is worth going. And I truly recommend a meal at St Peter's, the oldest restaurant in Europe dating back to 803.

The timings are perfect, and the guide, Maxine, tries to provide tips and recommendations as much as possible. I would recommend a longer time though for the free time, as I think it is not enough to visit all there is in Salzburg for only 3 hours.

Our tour guide Keith was great friendly, knowledgeable and fun. The cost of the tour was less expensive than if we had purchased train tickets on our own. The combination of guided tour and time to explore on our own worked well with adequate time in Salzburg.
