Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples

Naples, Italy

Explore legendary Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius, the only active volcano in continental Europe, on a full-day guided tour from Naples. It's a trip not to be missed by any visitor to this region of Italy and includes both a guided tour of Pompeii's haunting ruins and a climb to the smoking summit of volcanic Mt Vesuvius.

Taking a guided tour is the best way to experience the enigmatic ruins of Pompeii, the largest archaeological site in Europe. Your guided tour of Pompeii (approximately two hours) takes you to the Forum, the Thermal Baths, Vetti's House and the Lupanare brothel, buried by volcanic ashes from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

After a break for an hour to enjoy a pizza lunch, you'll then board your coach to transfer to Mt. Vesuvius, to view first-hand the source of the devastation that destroyed the city of Pompeii almost two thousand years ago.

You can choose to climb Mt, Vesuvius (approximately 45 minutes), accompanied by your guide, and walk around the crater at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters). From the summit you'll have panoramic views of the picturesque Bay of Naples from east to west. Peering down into the depths of the crater, you may see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping, but still active, volcano.

A medium to high level of fitness is required to complete the climb. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes! There is a rest point where you can choose to wait for your group if you do not wish to climb all the way to the top.

The climb to Vesuvius is supposed to be accompanied - we were just given tickets and told to climb on our own. We had to pay another local guide at the top of the crater to explain things to us. This was really disappointing. The rest of the tour was great

It was a great experience from the moment I booked! I was k indly assisted to change my type of reservation to the 9:00 am call at my hotel to make sure I was ready for the day! I recomend the tour 100% the staff in Napoli where GREAT! Money well spent for some relaxing while learning and taking in all the history.

Our trip to Pompeii was a great experience. The only complaint was when we arrived in Naples a few minutes ahead of schedule our guide was not where we were told to go. The train station in Naples is very busy and seems to be in a questionable part of town. Me and another family going on the tour were a little nervous. Once our driver arrived and located us the rest of the day was great. Our tour of Pompeii was interesting and the guide had a lot of personality. Climbing to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius was an amazing experience.

Lovely experience, but sad that we could not get to the crater as it was too windy and were not allowed by the rangers. Was extremely disappointed in not seeing the crater of Vesuvius. The Pompeii trip was spectacular and the guide was good to explain in depth all the history behind it.

We had a very nice time on this trip. Pompeii was amazing... I'm glad we only saw a portion of it, because I don't think I could have walked any more. Mt. Vesuvius and the drive to and from it, were gorgeous.

My son and I took the high speed train from Rome to pick up this tour outside the Naples Train Station. The tour guide was there on time and found a few of us that were waiting. The trip was great, ran smoothly, and allowed just enough time at both places plus a nice hour for lunch. It was exactly what I was looking for when I decided to use a tour rather than try to get myself to both places on my own and the information provided by our guide, Andreas, was very informative.

Our guide was hilarious! I will never forget the Pompeii brothel :) Since I studied geology in school I most looked forward to seeing Vesuvius and thou I did see the other reviews saying they dont give enought time for really appreciating the hike, it was still my favorite part of the day... go and youll see why

Excellant tour! There were only 12 people in our group which was great. We are not "tour" people-we would prefer to sightsee on our own but this was worth doing the tour. First, you don't want to drive yourself in Italy--the drivers are INSANE!!! Second, our tour guide Andrea and drive, Luigi were worth the money! They provided interesting information in a fun way and didn't take themselves too seriously. A visit to Pompeii is a must if you go to Italy. Pizza lunch was good and provided a great way to meet others in the group. Climbing to the summit of Vesuvius was great exercise and an experience not to be missed if you are reasonably fit. The ride up and down Vesuvius by van was better then any scary rollercoaster ride!! All in all, worth the money!

This day trip was wonderful. Although I was given a meeting point, the day before the tour Viator tried to call and arrange a pick up at my hotel (I was out seeing Naples). I was met by a friendly guide and escorted onto a clean passenger van. People who brought luggage were accomadated without a problem. The driver drove us safely to Pompeii's ruins, where our guide, who is an archeologist, toured the ruins with us. I thought the "pizza lunch" was going to be cold and eaten on the bus, but we went to a local pizzeria where we were given a choice of pizza which was then prepare and brought to the tables by a waitress. The drive to the top of Mt Vesuvius was done safely. We got a new guide who was born and raised on the mountain, although she didn't climb to the top with us, no problem, you have the rest of the group encouraging you to go to the top. To actually ascend the Mt is a significant undertaking that I didn't complete but all the young people in my group did. This trip was wonderful, and I am hard to please.

Pompeii was so interesting. In the US we sometimes fool ourselves that a few hundred years of history is 'ancient', but this was really a historic place. Our guide, Andreas, was very knowledgeable and gave us beau coup information and a few laughs as well. Vesuvio was magnificent. Wished I'd dressed a little warmer for the hike to the top, but I still enjoyed it and can say I CLIMBED VESUVIO!! It was spectacular. The scenery all the way up the mountain is unbelievable. Sweeping views of the entire city of Naples, and the sea. Loved it.

The Pompeii section of tour was very interesting and the guide was informative but rushed us through too quickly and other members of the tour agreed. There was barely time for photos. The second guide to Vesuvius gave us barely any information and when she let us out the bus, demanded we be back at an exact time. Some members were elderly and found it intimidating thinking they wouldn't make it to the top and back in time. Then she left the tour before it was even finished.

This trip was good, but disorganised. We were told we would be picked up from hotel nearby to ours at a certain time. The bus ended up coming 10 mintes early, and we felt very fortunate that we had been there, otherwise I'm sure we would have been left behind..._br/_ The tour of Pompeii was amazing and our guide was very informative (a former history student)._br/_ A great deal of confusion arose when after the Pompeii tour, they had to separate and organise three different groups of people, as only some were going to attend the Vesuvius tour, while others were joining differnt tours. _br/_ It was a very stressful moment, trying to coordinate everyone at this point. People wouoldn't listen and continued to ask an overload of questions, while a family lost an (adult) member aand tried to keep the entire group waiting. _br/_ I would like to emphasise this was no fault of the guide, who had tried to answer everyones questions and remain professional. Perhaps however, more guides to accommodate and direct the ongoing groups would have been beneficial._br/_ We were told we would have pizza for lunch, but instead got a dried out pasta with a few semi-cold french fries._br/_ Other than that, amazing tour and I'm so glad I did a tour for it...Unless you know alot about history, Pompeii may look like a pile of old ruins (clearly i'm not a history buff), so having an informative guide was great. The climb was challenging, but worthwhile.

Mixed experience. Due to construction, the bus could not come to hotel so we had to walk to the Napoli Centrale station. Pickup from there was much later than promised; I was getting worried that they wouldn't come. Guide in the bus to Pompeii and in Pompeii (Andre!) was very good; we enjoyed his explanations and his humor. Guide switched when we went to Vesuvius, and the new woman guide was not good. The worst thing happened on the way from Vesuvius back to Naples. The van broke down on the way on a narrow winding road. I was worried about personal safety because the broken down van was not very visible from back and the road was narrow. I had to ask to get out of the van. We had to wait for about an hour before a different van came to pick us up. This was stupid waste of time. We could have used that lost time in Naples that evening. On the way back, our woman guide got off the van far before our hotel drop off. We thought that was unprofessional.

This was the second part of the tour to Pompeii. We only had 8 people total so it was fine. The transportation was nice but our tour guide was sulking because of the fiasco we experienced in the morning so she was not very talkative and gave only limited information to us on the ride up to where we could walk to the top. It's definitely worth the tour, but there needs to be a guide that can be a "tour guide" and not just someone that takes you to and from a destination.

Pompei trip was great and the guide Andrei did a wonderfull job! We enjoyed the trip and recommend it. The only thing we would have liked was a bit more time for the vesuvius visit. We walked up and had to hurry back to visit the volcano in the given timeslot. An extra 1/2hour over there would be great.

This was my favorite tour ever, part of it what we were seeing other part was the staff. We were picked up promptly from our cruise and taken to where all the tours get together in Pompeii. We were then shown the local jewelry custom and given a chance to buy water. The guide, Andre, was fun took us to get out headsets etc, then off to Pompeii. He created an amazing story and picture of life during their time. Describing the purposes of different things throughout the city and making you feel like you were there. Pompeii itself is breath taking and I was so pleased. Then we were taken to lunch in a quaint local cafe and it was the largest personal pizza I had ever seen. After our break we took a bus to Vesuvius and were given an opportunity to walk up at our own pace. PS it is a HIKE, but so worth it. Everything ran smoothly and I learned so much, I do suggest this to anyone.

Informative tour guide who explained all the main facts and points of interest in regards to Pompeii. Trip to Mt Vesuvius was also really good. For this tour I would recommend good walking shoes for Mt Vesuvius, thongsflip flops are not really suitable. Also take a water bottle with you if doing tour during warmer months, you can refill it during Pompeii tour.

My wife became ill on the morning of the trip and we were fortunate enough to switch the trip to Tuesday. Your staff helped us with the change but we could not go on the "Small Group Naples City Tour".Our tour guide and driver were totally professional. We were met at our hotel exactly on time and taken to the pier for our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the excursion.

This tour was wonderful!! Not just the tour but the company. My train was late from France so I missed my connecting train in Bologna to get me to Naples. The company sent a private driver who waited AN HOUR - in the heat - for me to arrive. He whisked me to Pompeii. I missed the Pompeii part of the tour that's okay, I had been here before but was still able to spend about 20 minutes in the forum area of the city. Then I had lunch with the tour group a wonderful oven baked pizza before going on to Mt. Vesuvius the main reason I took the tour. Our tour guide, Julia, was very sweet and well informed and she spoke English very well. She was very personable and talked and joked with everyone. After the tour they dropped the whole van off at the Archeological Museum, which was nice because it was less time I had to spend in their notorious metro and I had just enough time to see the frescos I had missed on the first trip, get to the central train station, and make my train. I highly recommend this tour and would go on it again if I ever took a family member back with me to Naples since I am definately not crazy enough to drive in that city on my own!!!!!
