Paris Walking Tour: World War II
Paris, France
Combine a little history with an afternoon stroll through Paris on a guided 2-hour World War II walking tour. Exploring the days of the Nazi occupation, you'll visit Paris sites specific to World War II and hear about the invasion of France, the Resistance, life in Paris during the occupation, the D-Day invasion and, of course, the heady days of Liberation.
Sights of the World War II Walking tour include:
Hotel Meurice, the hotel that housed the Nazi headquarters during the occupation - you can still see a bullet hole in the door crest
Prefecture de Police - current-day Police headquarters and site of the initial uprising against the occupation
Deportation Memorial, in memory of the more than 200,000 individuals sent to concentration camps across Europe
The Resistance, their leaders, secret communications, sabotage and their fate if caught
The stories of everyday Parisians caught up in the turmoil of the Nazi occupation
Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French and future President of the Republic
The Liberation, when fighting raged throughout the city until the surrender on August 25, 194

It rained on the day we were there - quite interesting though.

We had a nice small group, great weather, and John Paul was an excellent guide. After this tour, I'm certain I won't walk past key buildings or monuments without remembering the 1940-44 occupation of Paris.

Mike, our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the topic and he made it fun. He could have walked a bit slower, but all in all a great tour!

The info was interesting but our guide was a very young around age 20 or so, American who walked too fast and never checked to see if the whole group was keeping up. We had several older persons in the group who actually were left behind and the guide had no idea he had lost them. Even my wife and I, who are healthy and walk a lot, lost the guide a couple of times and didn't know which way he had gone. Luckily we were always able to find him. Even after we told him repeatedly that there were people getting left behind, he didn't seem able or willing to slow down and keep an eye on the entire group.

The guide was friendly but the tour was too narrowly focused on one small period of the war just prior to liberation and we did not see as much as we expected.

The tour was interesting, but the guide was not too knowledgeable about World War II. Would have been better having a guide who knew more, not just textbook stuff.

It was interesting but it could have had a little more substance. Still it was worth taking for the historical points and we did see things that we hadn't noticed in all the years we've been coming to Paris.

The tour was very interesting and educational. The guide was good but some of the stories he was telling where hard to follow and out of context, in particular stories relating to what life was like during occupation.

The guide had lived in Paris a long time, so he knew a lot. But he made the mistake of doing more walking than talking, and when he talked he seemed to talk to one or two of the group only. One woman in the group was almost completely ignored. And she was irritated.

Because of timing, we had to do this tour the day we got into Paris. Therefore, my husband and I were kind of out of it as we felt like it was 10 pm! However, we still enjoyed the tour and found it very informative. I was shocked at all the information our tour guide had, both for our stops and from the random questions our group had. The only thing I would recommend is that the guide walks a bit slower, as we almost lost him a few times in the crowded sidewalks, and we even had one elderly couple decide to go home halfway through because they couldn't keep up! Do this tour once you've gotten used to the time change and bring comfortable shoes!

The guide was extremely knowledgeable and was a great storyteller. It is a lot of walking and might not be appropriate for younger kids or older adults due to the length of the tour.

The guide was very knowledgeable, but the pace was too quick for one of our members. It would have been better had the walking been a little less rushed.

Tour guide was not very knowledgeable and just recited information found in travel books. A very American perspective as well. Very disappointing tour.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about World War II history and also very courteous with the tour clients. The tour is definitely very interesting and eye-opening, and I highly recommend it for those interested in war and conflict history.

This tour was lead by a well-educated guide with a specialty in 20th-century history, particularly focused on WWII France. Her great interest in the subject made the tour engaging, informative and well worth it. The guide also was very warm and helpful to all of us.
