Seine River Cruise and Paris Canals Tour

Paris, France

Cruise the waters of the River Seine before enjoying a unique view of old Paris from the canal Saint Martin. See many of the major attractions of Paris from the water including Notre Dame and The Louvre.

This two and a half hour cruise on the River Seine and the canal Saint Martin gives a unique view of Paris. You will experience both the grandeur of the Seine and the quiet intimacy of Paris' network of inner-urban canals, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 1800s. Along the way, your informative guide-interpreter will provide illuminating insights into the history of Paris and its canals.

Your River Seine cruise begins near the Musee d'Orsay and sweeps you past a parade of monuments: the Louvre Museum, the Institute of France, the spires of Notre Dame Cathedral and tiny Ile Saint Louis, before arriving at the entrance of the Canal Saint Martin.

The first section of the canal takes you through an eerily lit tunnel which passes under the Place de la Bastille. Emerging from the tunnel you will discover the most romantic "boulevard" in Paris - the Canal Saint Martin's three miles of pure poetry. Reflected in the canal's waters you'll see old swing bridges, half-moon footbridges and the abundant foliage of horse-chestnut trees.

A trip along the Canal Saint Martin reveals a side of Paris that tourists don't usually get to see. The canal winds its way through a series of 19th-century locks and enchanting old areas of Paris until, 26 meters above the Seine, the canal reaches the Villette Basin. Here you will pass the raised Crimee Bridge before arriving at La Villette Park, where the Science Museum, the Geode and enchanting gardens await you.

Note that the morning tour begins near Musee d'Orsay and ends at Bassin de la Villette. In the afternoon the schedule is reversed, beginning at Bassin de la Villette and ending near Musee d'Orsay.

Interesting tour, though there are many locks to go through in the canal system, which took a great deal of time. The commentary was a little difficult to understand, especially on the top deck with the wind.

What an unexpected pleasure, really interesting. This tour gave a good experience of the Seine, then a great experience of going through the locks and tunnels of Paris. pleasant lunch with lots of options at the end of the tour and an easy train back to Paris.

We enjoyed this unusual view of Paris. The day was cold and if you stayed inside it was very comfortably warm. Take your own afternoon or morning tea and enjoy it even more. There are many locks to go through and some delays can occur.

Not worth your time at all. The 230 departing point way out of the way. Cruise it self not great majority of time in the water locks waiting for water to go down and boat stops. This happens nine times. Not much of the city in tour just dirty canals and graffiti.

The cruise is great, but the instructions on your voucher leave a lot to be desired. For one thing, it leaves from a very difficult to get to and large park, and there is nothing on the map of that park in our guidebooks to suggest just "ou" in the vastness of the park, the stop for the canal boat might be. We spent almost the entire day looking for it and then an hour actually on the boat. It IS worth doing though.

The tour would be enhanced if it was accompanied with some music and availability of snacks and drinks to pass the time during the locks.

I thought a boat trip on the Seine was a bit 'samey' so opted for the canal tour - a mistake. The boat was dissapointing, on a hot day there was no bar on board; little outside seating and the English commentary was rushed (the French version was longer). It took ages to get through each of the 9 locks and we had to wait for other boats - at peak time this will be a nightmare. We over-ran by an hour and all were very relieved to get off!

My wife and I were not that impressed with this tour. About 2 of the 2.5 hours is spent on the canal. If we were to do it again, we would have just done a Seine cruise. Much of the area along the canal is not that nice. The staff was nice, but seemed to more interested in each other. The tour guide's English was good, but not great. The directions here were also not very clear. It simply said to 'meet in the Parc de la Villette'. This is a pretty large park, so a little more detail would have been helpful. Luckily we had plenty of time on our hands. They could have said 'meet outside of My Boat restaurant (side note: despite the English title of the restaurant, everything is in French)'.

It was cold but clear on this day. The tour speaker was a bit difficult to understand, however. Next time I'd go on a cruise of just the Siene as I didn't realize how many locks there were-slow and added to length of cruise. Plus this cruise didn't take us entirerly the length of the Seine. So we never got down to the Eifel tour area.

It can take 30 minutes of the cruise just to get through all the gates in the canals. I would prefer just the Seine river cruise.

This tour gave me a different perspective of Paris which I enjoyed. However, it is necessarily slow because of going through lochs and it would have been nice to have been able to buy a glass of wine and a nibblie on board while one was there to savour it in a nicer way. For the price, I think it is worthwhile and for someone like me who loves Paris it just gives a better perspective of the place overall.

Wonderful trip Great way to see Paris and people along the canal side. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day and there was lots of action along the canal side. Captain and assistant were very friendly and interacted with guests. Commentary in English was very clear and advice to stand at front of boat to see the lock action was good

A potted history of France delivered by a Canadian. However it worked out well. We started at 'Hotel des Invalides' then walked across Le Seine to Place de la Concorde and finished outside Le Louvre. OUr Canadian guide, Scott, was very entertaining and informative.

This tour gives you an opportunity to see major Paris sites from a different perspective, and keep site seeing while giving the feet a rest. The only thing we were not aware of is that the tour cannot go back to the start (didn't think about the fact that to do so would take another hour and half if in fact it was possible) It is necessary to get yourself back, which we did by the Metro train.

I would not recommend this tour for any one who doesn't know french or their way around Paris. I was on what I thought was suppose to be an english tour and it was done mostly in french and very bad english. They drop you off in not the best place in Paris, and you only get to see Notre Dame and a couple of other sites.

Cruise on the Seine was great, guess we did not know how long the canal part would last and was really too long and not that much fun, going up and down the locks, definetly learned about the canal and their lock system. Would have preferred to use that precious time shopping, oh well, next time!!!

I really liked the lazy cruise down waters and areas of Paris the average tourist does not see. Finding the docking point was not easy. I think a better map and some more specific instructions would help. There was confusion for us when it said to go to the St Denis Canal instead of the St Martin Canal. We thought we had to cross the bridge and got very confused. Also the website needs to state definitively that you must print your ticket. The captain was very strict about that but finally let us on with only our Blackberry proof of purchase.

I enjoyed the cruise. We had a lovely sunny day for it. I would imagine the night cruise would be very pretty and relaxing too. Patrons should be aware that the boat passes through a 2 kilometer tunnel. We had a person who is closter phobic and had a hard time with the tunnel. I would recommend starting (if you have the choice) at the open water portion.. closer to Notre Dame... and ending with all the locks.

it was interesting to see how the locks work. The boat was full of French speaking tourists and the our guide didn't do a very good job of translating in English. It took forever to go through each lock. We got left off at a location that held nothing of interest to us and we had to take the metro back. We had imagined that it would be faster through the locks and that we would see more of the countryside outside of Paris.

Great trip through the locks and canals of Paris. Very relaxing, you don't have to be in a hurry. Going through the tunnel was amazing. One criticism is that the commentary in French and English was very repetitive, but it didn't spoil the trip.

Our Seine/Canal cruise was very nice. Beautiful weather. Two things...we did not realize when we booked the cruise that is was 'one way.' No problem, just something to plan for. Paris has a wonderful Metro/RER transportation system. Secondly, while our cruise was listed as 'English,' that was kind of marginal. Lots of French narration with minimal, somewhat difficult to understand English descriptions. Would I do it again? Absolutely!_br/_ Melanie H.

Long slow canal ride great on a good summers day, especially after many other tours sit back and relax for a while. Saw parts of Paris one would never get to or even knew were there. One needs to take the Metro back to the centre of Paris but it is only a 4 min walk to the station and very easy to use.

We spent the morning at the Parc de la Villette, which is a brilliant place to explore, and then spent a lovely relaxing and fascinating couple of hours on the boat trip down the canal and the Seine back to the Musee d'Orsay. A really great way to see a different side of Paris. We realised later that the canal tunnel actually runs along under the middle of the street past our hotel, on the Boulevard Richard Lenoir! Highly recommended trip.

The trip was a succcess from start to end. The only point I would like to make is there is not a lot of sign posts indicating the actually departure point. It was pure luck an personal judgement that found it rather than signs or assistance.
