Iceland South Coast and Jokulsarlon Lagoon Day Trip from Reykjavik

Reykjavik, Iceland

Head out to the magnificent glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, and follow in the footsteps of James Bond in "Die Another Day" and Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider". This exhilarating full-day excursion from Reykjavik takes you along Iceland's southern coastline, known for its exquisite mountain scenery.

Many of Iceland's biggest glacier rivers run into the Atlantic Ocean on the country's southern shore. Along the way to this amazing coastline you'll pass charming villages such as Selfoss, Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur, and the Skaftafell National Park; there is also a stop to visit the Skogarfoss waterfall. You'll also drive through the vast desert of Skeidarasandur, where sand storms can be so powerful they've been known to strip the paint off a car!

Just before you reach the lagoon, you'll pass Iceland's biggest volcano, Oraefajokull glacier, which also has the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjukur, at 6950 feet (2119 meters).

At the lagoon you will have time to view this stunning area before taking a boat ride. But these are no ordinary boats! They are capable of driving short distances as well as sailing on water - something quite unique!

Jokulsarlon lagoon started to form in the early 1920s, and is growing bigger every year. You will see blocks of ice that have broken off Europe's biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, and are sailing slowly towards the ocean, which is only a mile away. Some of the icebergs are partially covered with volcanic ash from ancient eruptions, and look like sculptures, made by Mother Nature herself!

This tour is seasonal, operating from 1 May to 31 October only.

A long day out but well worth the effort. Probably too long day for children.

Helki was great taking us to Jorkulsarlon. We were able to maximize our time being seeing many sites to and from the lagoon. He was extremely resourceful in removing a large rock that stuck between 2 rear tires, which saved us from a flat. Very informative, relaxing, and fun experience. Viator really made the journey better.

Stunning glacial lake, well worth the long drive. Boat trip was fantastic with informative guide. Highly recommended. Beautiful waterfalls along the way. Better to take your own food as meal stops not so great. An unforgettable day.

Excellent trip, with many stops along the way to break up the driving. Unfortunately we had very poor weather, but the lagoon was still spectacular.

A very long day which can not be missed! The drive from Reykjavik to the lagoon is long but breathtaking! The guide provided fantastic information about the formation of the geographical features, but we just wished that the coach could stop every five minutes for us to take photos! The final destination is an experience and a half although be prepared for the weather to change drastically from your destination. Anythings possible so be prepared! Awful weather did not deter us from enjoying this memorable day out. More than adequate toilet stops and a well timed evening stop for dinner before returning late to Reykjavik.

The Iceland South Coast and Lagoon Day Trip is a long 14 hour day, but very much worth it. After all, you don't go on holiday to rest do you?

The Jokulsarlon Lagoon is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The high point of the trip was going into the lagoon on an amphibious boat and tasting a crystal clear, delicious piece of a 1000 year old iceberg.

I just wanted to say that I have been to Iceland previously and taken various tours. This was my first with your company and also my first hopefully of many! Visit to the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon. Quite simply, the entire tour was amazing and outstanding in every sense of the word. The tour guide was simply the best, extremely knowledgeable, friendly, good humoured and one of the best guides ever. Yes it is a long day but at the same time, the hours pass so quickly and not only was the trip value for money but I have come away with a lifetime of memories. Iceland really is one of the most amazing destinations I've ever been lucky enough to travel to and I cannot wait to visit again.
