3-Day Italy Trip: Naples, Pompeii and Amalfi

Rome, Italy

Spend three days exploring Naples, Pompeii and Amalfi. You'll visit several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and discover the rich history of Italy. Departing Rome, you'll travel through the Campania region where high-end hotels meet historical sites. This is also the capital of Italian comfort food, home to pizza, spaghetti and mozzarella cheese.

Naples is the region's capital and filled with historic castles and sites. The city was first colonized by the ancient Greeks, who gave it the name Neapolis (new city). Today, Naples' city center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A short distance from Naples stands the once lost city of Pompeii. Covered in ash from a volcanic eruption in 79 B.C., the site was only accidentally discovered during renovations some 1,700 years later.

Winding along coastal roads, the rugged town of Amalfi emerges with its colorful terraces perched along steep slopes. In the public squares below, take your pick of restaurants and linger in souvenir shops where red coral jewelry is the signature accessory.

No real tour in Amalfi - more of a do it yourself trip. Transportation back to Rome was a mess and the local tour group was unwilling to assist. You can book your own trip much cheaper. Amalfi is really worth seeing though.

The Amalfi coast is beautiful, and the trip overall was great, however, when we arrived at our hotel The Excelsior, they did not have a reservation for us, and we were given a small room, without a view and the air conditioning did not work. The hotel meals were very good and the hotel appeared overall to be a very nice and 4 star business. The hotel staff, with the exception of Anna Marie on the front desk who was surly and unfriendly, were polite and very friendly and made the guests feel welcome.

The walking tour of Naples was a bit short but considering that the highlight was Pompeii it was OK. The cameo factory tour was really not interesting and the items far too expensive for souvenirs to take home. Great views of the Tyrrhennian Sea from the Hotel Fontana in Amalfi and good to explore on our own. But we could have used some more advice on what's there to see. Overall a very good excursion.

The staff was very professionaland knowledgeable. Our only frustration was waiting for translation for 2 people who were with an entire group of English speaking travelers. Our hotel in Almalfi had a breathtaking views. Thank You for making our excursion so memorable.

Stop in Naples was a waste of time-more time could have been spend in Pompeii or SorrentoAmalfi. We should have gone to Sorrento but things got crossed and we were booked in Amalfi instead. Had to make reservations in Sorrento on our own and pay difference.

Our tour guide from Rome to Naples was very good. The guide in Naples and Pompeii was decidedly unexciting and her English was very difficult to understand. The hotel in Amalfi was very nice, the service and meals were excellent. In the tour description it only listed breakfast as included. It turns out dinner was also included. Also in the tour description it said the we would return to Rome mid day on the last day. It turns out we didn't leave until 3pm and then went back to Pompeii to wait for the Pompeii tour to leave for Rome. One day in Amalfi is more than enough.

Mostly positive experience. Transport and hotel excellent, staff friendly and fun. However, felt should have included with visit to Pompeii a trip to museum in Naples where Pompeii artifacts are held, or at least given a choice. Walking tour of Naples uninteresting and a waste of time! Also, some tours give some choices and suggestions for free day activities, and this would have been appreciated as we did not have time to do our own research.
