Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour

Rome, Italy

Take a walk through Rome's 2,000 years of history with an expert guide who'll bring the past alive. You'll have a hands-on history lesson at key ancient sites including the Colosseum, Forum and Pantheon on this fascinating half-day tour. The entertaining and informative three-hour walking tours are often led by skilled archaeologists, who can help unlock Rome's many secrets.

Perfect for first-time visitors, this guided walking tour is the ideal introduction to Rome's famous sights, leaving you with time in the day free to explore the city at your leisure. The afternoon walking tour (held in the morning on Sundays) visits Rome's best known ancient sights, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Several major sites are covered in a short period of time, and you'll receive enlightening insights into the city's millennia of history as you stroll.

While your local guide is trained to educate you in history, politics and architecture, they will also make the daily life and times of ancient Rome come to life with enthusiasm and humor. In three hours you'll relive life in ancient Rome as a gladiator, emperor, slave, Vestal Virgin, senator, merchant and goddess!

The tour includes inside visits of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. However, the entrance fee is NOT included in the tour price, so a supplement of approximately 15 euros per person will be payable direct on the day of travel.

This tour was interesting but it was a lot of walking. Since we did the tour in the afternoon, and many in our group did, it was an exhausting walk from the Coluseum to the Piazza Navona. Our guide was interesting although he tended to walk a bit too fast and our group was spread out.

This was a great tour of the city. This tour took you everything you want to see in Rome. It could have been longer, but you always have time to go by yourself.

This is a great tour. Easy meeting place exactly as it states in the print our receipt from the internet. Great to skip the lines. The knowledge of the guide was very good. She knew the history, the dimensions, and how the rest of Rome tied in. This tour was surprising in that after the Collisseum we went to the Forum which I knew but then to Trevi Fountain and then to the Pantheon and then finished in a beautiful Piazza. This is a bit long and a lot of walking but well worth it!!

We did this tour in March 2012 with our infant daughter (1.5 years) and pram. This is a long walking tour, took just over 3 hours to complete the whole tour. However, the tour ended in Piazza Novona and it took us a good 30-45 minutes to walk from there back to where it started (Colosseum), so be prepared to walk! It was great to see and hear about these historic places. The guide spoke reasonable English although as there were a lot of people around it could sometimes be hard to hear what she was saying through your earphone. I would say only about 50% of the people who started made it through the whole tour (we did), slowly people dropped off as it was a hot day and there aren't really any breaks. I wouldn't really recommend having a pram for this tour like we did, as the Colosseum and Roman Forum were difficult to get around with it. I would still recommend this tour overall, simply because it's nice to hear about these important places instead of just look at them! However maybe they could consider shortening the tour a bit.

Our guide was super. She told us things we would not have gotten otherwise. There was a lot of walking but in Rome one doesn't mind since everywhere you turn there is something interesting to see and the streets are so short. _br/_ We actually walked I believe almost all of the ancient part which made it more meaningful. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone who doesn't have trouble walking.

We've booked a trip with max. 25 people but in fact there were about 10 of us.The guide was super, information was just enough to be interesting but not get bored. We are Russian speakers and guide's English was good to understand, no problems at all. We had a few breaks at each interesting point (10-15 min) to explore the place. The earphones were working fine and were quite useful and easy to use. Strongly recommend this tour for those who would like to explore the old Romans part of Rome in a short time and without lines at the entrance to Colosseum and Forum Romano.

Even in the 'off' season there are queues and crowds. We were fortunate to have Fabrizzio, a native Roman and archeologist. The perfect combination for this tour. A group of only 9, it was very comfortable. Very informative and great to walk past the ticket queues.

The walking tour was a good introduction to Rome, but was WAY too rushed. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, but we didn't have enough time at any of the sites and had to go back on our own. You are better off to bring a Rome guide book with you to the sites and take your time.

A great day and our guide really knew her stuff. This was extremely interesting and not a difficult or strenuous walk at all. I was a little apprehensive about the amount of walking my wife and I would have to do. There is only one complaint I would like to voice. At the end of the tour we were left to find our own way back to our hotels etc. We weren't taken nor pointed in the right direction to a transport hub or, which would have been better perhaps taken back to where we started. Directions were given only when asked. Being dumped in the middle of a square which is nothing more than a place of historical interest is not the way to end a tour with people who don't know the city they're visiting. Apart from the way it ended the tour is defiantly a must when you visit Rome.

No fault of the tour company, but because of a rare Rome snow fall the Coliseum was closed. I would have preferred a refund to taking what was now a disappointing tour.

Excellent tour. If deciding between the small group or the 25 person max tour, I'd recommend the latter simply because you'll save some money and get the same information. The tour guide has a small microphone and everyone is given an earpiece so you don't miss a thing if you're in the back of the group. The tour guide will ensure you don't get lost; she had a small flag to follow and was regularly counting to make sure everyone was together before moving on.

This trip is A must see. Our tour guide was great, very informative and was more than happy to answer all our question related or not. Because of the time of year we ended up with private tour with no extra change. Would definitely recommend this tour.

The tour was great. Michela was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable. I had my grandmother with us who did not move too fast but our guide was very understanding. There is a lot of walking, if you are not up to 3 hours on your feet this is not the tour for you.

Brilliant Tour. Our guide was Alfredo (I think was his name) . He was very informative and you could tell he enjoyed his work and had a genuine interest in all that he spoke about. Some people may miss the extra charge for your entrance into the Colosseum and Roman Forum. It is on the page so be aware. Well worth the money though and a bonus if Alfredo is your guide.

We loved the walking tour. We were led by an archeologist (sorry, I have forgotten her name) who had facts and information at her fingertips, as well as a dry sense of humor. She was very organised and made sure the tour group stayed together and on schedule despite it being a very crowded day with Rome swarmed with tourists. We would recommend this tour to any first time tourists to Rome.

This was the first tour we did after our arrival in Rome. Piazza Navona was a good meeeting point and our guide was easy to find. Fabrizio was an excellent guide - his knowledge was extensive and he was able to paint a picture in our minds of what Rome would have been like 2000 years ago. There was a lot of walking as you would expect - wear good shoes but most of it was on flat ground cobblestoned streets - the Roman Forum being the hilliest part. We visited the Pantheon what a place that was, the Trevi Fountain, Piazzo Venicia, Roman Forum, Caesar's Tomb and the Colosseum. Fabrizio kept us informed the whole time so that we felt we knew about life in those times. Would definitely recommend to others.

Our guide was informative and also entertaining. She kept us going despite the heat, giving us breaks for restrooms and water. The places we visited were essential to the understanding of Rome and its origins. It must be very difficult to keep the tour fresh, from the guide's point of view but she did a great job.

This is a most excellent tour. We saw so many of the main attractions in Rome. If you only have time for one tour on your visit take this one! Our guide was wonderful and very knowledgeable. It is a strenuous walk so wear comfortable shoes - bring water if it is hot - and sunscreen or an umbrella is a good idea. Thank you Viator!

I took a walking tour of ancient Rome on Monday, June 14th with Steve and I have to say it was fantastic. I was expecting a group of 6 but to my surprise it was a one on one tour. Steve’s knowledge of Rome was excellent and it was terrific seeing Rome from his point of view. He knew all the best locations for incredible photographs. Best of all, Steve was an excellent teacher. This tour was much better than I had anticipated. Thanks Steve and Viator!
