Assisi and Orvieto Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

Feeling overloaded by Rome's epic sightseeing options? Why not leave Rome for the day and take an excursion to Assisi and the Umbrian hill town of Orvieto. Your journey will take you away from modern highways and large cities to discover the real Italy, where ancient villages are just waiting to be discovered.

Leaving Rome, you'll travel in a northerly direction and drive along the Tiber Valley to reach the marvelous medieval hilltop town of Orvieto, whose origins go back to Etruscan times. You'll stop here to admire Orvieto's magnificent 14th-century cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture.

Your tour continues into Tuscany's green hills covered in olive groves and vineyards. This is the land of some of Italy's best known D.O.C. (quality controlled) wines, which include Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

After a lunch of traditional local dishes, you'll drive along the shores of Lake Trasimeno to arrive in Assisi, built at the foot of Mount Subasio. During a guided stroll through the alleys of this historic town you will see the Church of St Claire, St Francis' birthplace, his childhood home and Town Hall Square with its

People's Palace and Roman temple dedicated to Minerva. You'll also pay a visit to St Francis' Basilica, close to the ancient city walls, with its magnificent frescoes painted between the 12th and 14th centuries.

Leaving Assisi, you will stop at the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli, named after the church where St Francis died in 1226.

Orvieto cute village on a hill, fun to roam around, church very nice. Lunch at farm relaxing, Assisi tour beautiful -life of the saints fascinating, fantastic views, guides very informative.

Tour and guides were great. A smaller bus was substituted, very uncomfortable and many complained.

Excellent - our guide was very good - the only thing I would change is a shorter lunch - and a little longer in Orvieto.

Loved this trip other than the meal. Would definitely recommend these destinations. Our Assisi guide was marvelous.

I could have done without the Orvieto stop because it was not enough time in Assisi. It would have been better to go straight to Assisi, have lunch, then tour, then shop and look around and then go back to Rome. Guide was ok.

A great one day get-away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Rome via motorcoach with Hotel pick up and drop off for convenience. Enjoyed the cable car lift to the medieval hilltop town of Orvieto filled with charm and a beautiful 14th century cathedral. Traveled through Tuscany's green hills to have a delicious luncheon of traditional local dishes at a Tuscan farm. I fell in love with the history of St. Francis Assisi, his birthplace, and childhood home. This tour is a must-see for anyone wanting to see the countryside and learn more about the history of the Estruscan times.

With thec exception of the stop at the local produce shop where we had lunch which was, quite honestly, appalling, the whole day was superb. The guide was first class and very helpful throughout and the coach driver was very good. I would suggest that the lunchtime stop is scrapped and instead more time should be spent at Assisi where your own lunch could be purchased.

I enjoyed the first part of the trip to Orvieto. However, had I known that there was a lengthy stopover at a predesignated restaurant with a predetermined menu, I would not have chosen this trip, The lunch break meant that we had limited time in Assissi. My main reason for choosing this trip was to have a significant part of a day to explore this significant medieval town.

Wonderful, though very long day. We had rainy overcast weather which detracted from the enjoyment of driving through the countryside. Orvietro is very quaint, Assisi and area overwhelming in it's religious buildings, history, with beautiful vistas. Lunch in a quaint agri-tourismo development was unspectacular. Both tour guides, the all day one and one at Assisi, were excellent.

The bus service and guide were excelent. A lot of usefull information about the places. lunch was good. the only thing that the trip would be better would be if we could have spent more time in Orvieto (only 30 minutes at the church) instead of 1 hour and a half at the lunch place. i recommend this tour to everyone.

This was a very nice tour and I liked that our group was very small. I really enjoyed both Orvieto and Assissi. I do think more time in Orvieto would have been nice and we could have done lunch there instead of the farm. We only had about 45 minutes to explore Orvieto. I loved our time in Assissi. Our local guide was great and really knew a lot of interesting information. I would recommend this tour for those who want to get a taste of what Orvieto and Assissi have to offer.

Very nice day trip and perfect way to break up our stay in the city. However, we wished we had spent more time in Orvietto and could have skipped the blatantly commercial food and wine tasting stop along the way. Our guide was very pleasant, but did not add much value as we were desposited places and left pretty much on our own. But, lovely places to visit, comfortable bus ride and worthwhile day.

The trip to Assisi was overall a good trip. However, I was somewhat disappointed with several of the planning points. We were unsure about where we needed to meet. Also, a number were unclear about where to return the audio. The guides were polite, professional, and knowledgeable. I had heard so many good things about Viator tours, I was a bit let down.

This day trip is definitely a must. The trouble with it, though, is that you don't have a whole lot of time to just soak it all in. I guess because of the travel time, it isn't possible to give you more time.

Assisi is now one of our favorite places to visit. It is absolutely beautiful and our guide was able to share the history and interesting stories to give it even more beauty! We enjoyed the trip up to Orvieto and we could have spend more time exploring the village. The pick up and drop off at our hotel was a real bonus, thanks.

The drive and sceneries were great. The drivers were great. The coach was beautiful and new. We even had a wonderful lunch in a small farm house somewhere in Ovierto._br/_ The Tour Guide however could have said more during the drive at least to Assisisi and Ovierto.. He did not really explained much during the drive, just pointed out a couple of places. The local lady tour guide was not much different. She explained a lot about the things we were seeing but she only explained stuff to a few people (the ones who were walking fast beside her) so the rest of us literally missed what she was saying and did not get much info about the places we went to. I thought that wa a real pity._br/_ The tour company can do better by training the guides they are hiring to do a better job of explaining stuff to the tourists._br/_ Irma

The itinerary was great with the stop at Orvieto perfectly timed to allow a visit to the Cathedral as well as a coffee break._br/_ The lunch was unsatisfactory. The pasta course was okay but the second course included inedible meat._br/_ The guide in Assisi was well-spoken and well-prepared. I would have preferred to have a guide accompany us throughout the churches, however. Perhaps, the sites do not permit a guide to escort visitors._br/_ Overall, I was very pleased with our tour guide William and our driver Guiseppi.

Our guide did not know much and seemed to be more like a bus driver that replaced a missing guide. Nothing was explained not even on the way there. We were dropped here and there and had to be ready to be picked up 20 min after. It was definitely the worse tour I booked. Very disappointing.

The leaders were OK. Lunch was terrible, cold--the lamb measly and the chicken inedible. The guide in Assissi was nice, but she talked about all these stores that had we wanted to buy something, we couldn't. I wanted some chocolate, but we didn't pass the store again on the way back to the bus.

Our destinations were good choices...except we only got to spend 40 mintues in Orvieto...and we really needed more time._br/_ However, our guide, William, had little to say, did not share history or information along the road...and he had terrible breath._br/_ In Assisi, we were blessed with a good local guide, who not only showed us the sights but shared history with us and was very detailed. She was great. We loved Assisi..._br/_ We made another stop, again with William, and I could not tell you the name of the town, nor the name of the church we saw. He was a dud._br/_ Overall, our Assisi local guide saved the day for us. _br/_ And our bus driver seemed competent but used his cell phone several times while driving and that was scary.

The trip would have been a 5 except for the guide William. It was the most unorganized process I have ever seen. We left later than the time stated, then we had to wait on the street for about 15 minutes for people who were late - not a word said as to why we were waiting. When we got to our destinations, on two occasions he failed to "count" people so we ended up waiting for them to show up, again delaying the trip and the time we had to spend at the sites. The final debacle was when we were headed home, we noticed after about a half hour that we had turned around and were returning to our last destination. As had been William's behavior previously, there was not communication at all. After we arrived at the parking lot we had vacated previously, someone finally asked him what was going on and he said that we came back to pick up some missing people. No one on the bus knew of anyone that was missing. As it turned out, we returned to pick up people from another bus but they had already left on a train! No communication at all this entire period! We ended up getting back very late, and since we were the last stop and were told it would be another hour before they dropped us off, we decided to get off and catch the Marriott shuttle back to the hotel at a cost of 12 Euros. Overall, we felt cheated because the delays reduced the time spent at the locations. What would have been a wonderful trip was due to the incompetent guide.

Both Assisi and Orvieto are definitely worth seeing. The local tour guide in Assisi was very good, but the guide who accompanied the group from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi (Mickey?) left much to be desired.I am not sure if it was because of the language barrier or because he lacked passion in his job. Orvieto was left generally unannotated and I learned more about it the following day on my way to Florence from Alena than from our Orvieto guide. Also, we should have spent more time in Orvieto and Assisi and less time in the farm house where we had lunch. _br/_ Overall, though, the trip is still recommended because neiter Assisi nor Orvieto should be missed.

Our guide on the bus, William, did not have the enthusiasm that we expected. He did very little to explain the countryside and scenery between bus stops. He also was our only guide in Orvieto so we were just told to look around for a few minutes and then meet back at the bus. The food at the lunch was ok but due to our guide it was more like a stop at a cafeteria - no details on the site etc. The local guide in Assisi was fantastic and made the whole trip worth while. You need to replace William with someone with enthusiasm for the job and who wants to interact with the travelers.

In retrospect, we'd have preferred an Assisi and Perugia combination. The exterior of the cathedral at Orvieto was beautiful, but the gentleman at the entrance to the church was so rude, we didn't dare enter. There didn't seem to be anything else to see in Orvieto. I had a problem with hearing the guide on the bus. I asked him if he could increase the volume, but it didn't make any difference. Lunch was very good.

I thought this trip was outstanding as it combined so many things into a day long excursion. The natural beauty of the countryside and the town of Orvieto and Assisi was sublime. Both cities have a long, fascinating history. Their churches and other buildings are a must see for any visitor to Italy. Our guides were friendly and the stop for lunch was wonderful!

Very cold day for us, as we are from Hawaii. Very informative trip, but the tour guides seemed to be in too much of a hurry to get it over with, especially in Orvieto. Just raced thru this quaint little town without any stops to look around or shop. You would think you would want to help the local economy, by giving a 10 or 15 minute rest to shop.

Excellent tour with small group. Only downside was it was bilingual English, Spanish, which we find makes it more difficult listening to the guide's commentary. Visit to Orvieto was quite brief. More time there would have now been nice, but it would have been impossible to spend more time there and see Assisi properly. The local guide in Assisi was excellent!
