Capri Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

This scenic full-day trip from Rome to Capri is a must for any visitor to Italy! You'll sail across the Gulf of Naples to the island of Capri, known as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean', where you have the option to take a boat ride to the beautiful Blue Grotto and take in stunning views from Anacapri.

Your journey begins by heading south along the Highway of the Sun, crossing the fertile Roman countryside and the area known as Castelli Romani dotted with enchanting medieval villages.

Arriving in Naples, you will board a jet boat for the 45-minute crossing to Marina Grande, the port of Capri. Here you will have the option (fees payable direct) of boarding a motorboat to reach the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), where sunlight passes into an underwater cavity and shines through the seawater, creating a magical blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. The boat trip is subject to weather and sea conditions.

On your return to the port, you'll board a minibus for a scenic drive to Anacapri, 918 feet (280 meters) above sea level. You will see wonderful views of the Bay of Naples, before continuing to a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch you can take advantage of some free time to explore Capri at your leisure. Don't forget to bring your camera!

You'll then return to Marina Grande and board the boat transfer to Naples. As you enter the port, you'll see Naples' splendid Castel Nuovo (a 12th-century fortress) and Royal Palace. Next, board the coach for your return three hour journey to Rome.

The tour was great. There is a 3 hour bus trip to the coast, but most sleep a bit. Our guides were very friendly and smart. The boat trip to the island on the speed boat was fun. But the island is outstanding! You have a choice for the Blue Grotto ($25 each) or the Chair lift to the mountain top as time is limited. We chose chair lift. No regrets and we had extra time in the lower town of Capri. The most beautiful sights imaginable from the mountain. Well worth the day and money.

I would have given it five stars, if the Blue Grotto was charged to the local rate of 17 Euro instead and with a boat ride. Nice trip overall, take the cable car to the mountain top is a must only for 10

Sadly, we wasted a lot of time and money on this horrible trip. We spent over 8 hours on the bus, and 50 minutes each way on a ferry boat crammed with local traffic. I believed we were to go on a private boat, and for the price we paid I thought it would be worth it. The guide was terrible, barely spoke the entire time. When she did speak, she spoke mostly in spanish to some people she befriended. The worst was the lunch. Hands down the worst italian food I had the entire trip to italy. Even the pasta was terrible. Our entire table was starving afterward because we couldnt eat any of it. I was so disappointed to have wasted the time and money on this trip. Capri was great, but you could have easily taken a train to naples (little over an hour - rather than the 4 hrs on the coach) and then taken the crowded ferry. There was no need for a guide, or at least I dont think there was a need since ours did not explain anything about the island.

This was the worst investment we have ever made with Viator--10 hours on a cramped bus and board for only four hours on Capri. In the past, we had good experiences with various Viator tours. This Capri tour was a big mistake for us--one that we will not repeat. We found the entire day to be a huge and uncomfortable disappointment.

The Capri Day Trip from Rome was wonderful! Everything went smoothly, and the tour guide who met us in Naples and introduced us to Capri was excellent. When we got to Naples my camera battery went dead. I asked him if he knew where I could buy a disposable camera. He told me to remind him when we docked at Capri. When we got there, I reminded him, and he pointed to a row of shops. "Try those!" he said, "and we will wait for you. You have 5 minutes." We ran into the nearby shop and there was our disposable camera! It was fabulous of him to help us like that. We went to the Blue Grotto, and the rower in the boat that took us into the grotto sang "O Sole Mio!" it was such fun!! Also, the woman who took our order for the tour over the phone followed up on every detail. She was the best. We will be using Viator again!

Wonderful trip. Beautiful weather and scenery...blue groto was worth the extra euros. Would like to go back and spend more time on the island. Day trip is too short. Don't forget to do the chair lift to the top of Capri...the view from the top takes your breath away.

just returned from rome today, the tour was nice but leaving from the hotel in rome takes several hours to arrive to naples before you take your 45min boat ride to the island leaving little time to wait for the resturant to accommodate the tour, feed everyone then leave time to sightsee, the train from rome takes an hour and would be less time in the bus, guides were nice, food nice, capri nice too.

We enjoyed a scenic full-day trip from Rome with the convenience of hotel pick up and drop off via motor coach. Our journey took us south through the Roman countryside of medieval villages arriving at Naples (unkempt city) where we boarded a hydrofoil boat excursion of 45 minutes to Marina Grande. Unfortunately, the sea was a little too rough for a boat tour of the Blue Grotto. We met a minibus which took us on a ride of a lifetime! At a high rate of speed, we climbed 918 feet above sea level to the hilltop of Ana Capri, railing the cliff on one side and passing of another minibus within in an inch on the other side. The beautiful views overlooking the Mediterranean sea were breathtaking! Wish we could have stayed at the top of the island a bit longer, to take in the nature and tranquility before lunch at a local restaurant and shopping. Enjoyed the beauty of the massive lemon trees, but the island was a bit commercialized taking away the charm of what was once a small, quaint island of beauty.

In one word: FABULOUS!!! Tour guides were very knowledgeable. Capri tour guide, Mr Pino was not only professional and courteous but also very well-versed on Capri. Very nice man and very interested in making sure you knew the history and saw all the highlights of Capri and what the Isle had to offer. Lunch was very enjoyable also. MANY THANKS!!!

Capri was beautiful even though the day we went it was cold and foggy. Locals said it was unusual for March weather. The tour was nice but beware when it is advertised as an "english" speaking tour it may include other languages as well. We were a little disappointed to learn that our tour included English, Spanish and Japanese tour guides and translations. Because of the three languages it resulted in continuous talking. We enjoyed the island and all it has to offer.

Capri is an amazing island that is diifenatly worth going! But the tour guide in there and his name was Pino is the worst; he didn't give us enough time to enjoy ourselves in there and the food is the worst ever. Most of the time was lost in the transportation between Rome and Napoli and in the island itself. I highly recommend to visit Capri but I recommend if tour guide is changed. Diffenatly not worth it for the money and again the worst of all was the food!!

Capri guide left us standing in 40 degree temps with high winds for 30+ minutes- no shelter. Took us to overpriced lemoncello store and had us walk halfway down mountain on steep steps to restaurant while other tour guides used buses to move customers. Did not consider age or physical limitations of people on tour. A bad weather day made worse by callous guide on Capri.

There was a traffic jam on the way to Naple to catch the ferry so the time spent in Capri and Anacapri was shorter than planned. We did not arrive Capri until almost 12:45pm. We only had 3 hrs. to visit Capri and Anacapri(including time to have lunch together at a planned restaurant. It was a cloudy day so the water in the cave was not as blue as it could be. The cave was so small that I don't know it really worth paying 25 euro per person to enter. Don't do it on a cloudy day for sure.

The only good thing about this tour was the guide of Capri, who was great. The problem is that to go from Rome to Capri you have to take an old bus with bad seats and gather all those who go to Capri as well as those for Pompeii. The bus came at seven but did not depart until eight, and then it made a lot of stops. In addition to people you meet all nationalities who speak different languages and the guide will explain all the way in five different languages as well, which was very annoying. I would see Capri again, but not with this company.

I was disappointed that we were spending our precious day in Italy, mostly on the bus. It was very cold in Capri (no fault of the tour). I was not impressed by the Capri guide, he seemed to be more interested with his friend that came along with our group. The lunch in Capri was awful. The tour seemed "canned".

Boy, my timing wasn't so great in Rome! On days that I booked the most expensive trips, those were the days when it poured rain! However, it was a nice boat ride, a small group, and I met some really cool people. The lunch, however, was terrible, although the local Capri wine was excellent. I did lots of shopping because there really wasn't much else to do because of the rain.

All in all the trip was good. It is a long commute from Rome. 3 hour bus and 1 hour boat trip each way. Capri is truly amazing and I fel like I was in another Country, oh yeah I was in another Country. The tourists shops on Capris are way above the shops in Rome. Most of their items are hand made and hand painted. Take the chair lift is is only 10 eros and well worth it. It was the best view I have seen in my life! Loved Capri. The trip was a little daunting though.

We loved the boat ride around the island only it was cut short by half due to the weather. We were disappointed but that's mother nature. The restaurant at the top was not that clean, especially the bathrooms, they were awful and spending four hours at the top was not fun. A lot of complaints about that. Capri was lovely though so worth the trip. People in charge of bus were awesome, guide spoke to fast even in English so a lot of us were confused about different issues. Probably won't go back.

Monica, the bus guide, was average. We were unable to see the Blue Grotto due to rough sea conditions and were to have extra free time in either Capri or Ana Capri, but that did not happen. Pino, the local guide, seemed more concerned about his cell phone while on the boat than conversing with anyone on the tour. While on Capri and Ana Capri, the tour seemed rushed with very little free time for any shopping or walking around. There no extra free time since the Blue Grotto was not accessible. The guide, Max, for Amafli Coast and Pompeii was MUCH better!!

When I booked the trip I was a little worried about how expensive it was. But while on the trip, I was so grateful as the tour was everything it promised and more! Yes there was a fee to get into the Blue Grotto, but it was just beautiful and peaceful, and all boatmen who took tourists into the Grotto sang while we did our little loop. I would definitely recommend taking the lift to the top of Anacapri, the views are breath taking and the ride up and down on the "ski lift" were relaxing.

This was so very worth doing. Capri is breathtaking and try not to miss the Blue Grotto when you are there. We had very nice guides traveling and in Capri. Viator is to be complimented on their thoroughness and professionalism. We were a family of 6 traveling and we used Viator 4 times in Europe. This is an affordable and recommendable tour company. Its a great well organised trip, the guides are great and do the best they can for you.We ourselves did,nt do the blue grotto boat trip but our fellow travellers told us we did,nt miss much as they were in the cave for only a few minutes and it was,nt worth the 25 euros. The lunch was adequate but the cable chair ride 12euros to the top was brilliant.Go !!!!! Capri is beautifull Its a great day out and a nice break out of our tour of rome.

We had a great day even though the weather wasn't the best. The guide was friendly and informative. The included lunch was pretty ordinary and it was about 2.20 pm by the time we ate, so everyone was very hungry. The ferry trip over to Capri was quite rough and many people were seasick, so take some tablets if you are prone. We have no complaints about the tour company, everything was organised very well.
