Naples and Pompeii Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

Discover history, art and archaeology on this fascinating day trip to Naples and Pompeii from Rome. Your journey takes you from Rome to the Gulf of Naples, where Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., devastating the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

On your full-day tour from Rome you'll travel along the Highway of the Sun, crossing the area known as Castelli Romani dotted with enchanting medieval villages. During the journey you will pass the ruined Abbey of Monte Cassino, destroyed during the Second World War.

After a photo stop at Naples' impressive Castel dell'Ovo (Egg Castle), you'll continue across Naples' historic center. You'll pass Naples' historic sights, including the Royal Palace, Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, San Carlo Opera House, Gallery of Umberto I and imposing Castel Nuovo.

Leaving Naples, you will cross the valley of Mount Vesuvius, passing through the villages of Ercolano (Herculaneum), Torre del Greco and Torre Annunziata before arriving in Pompeii for lunch.

After lunch, you will take a two-hour walking tour of the ancient city of Pompeii with a local guide. A thrilling archaeological journey unfolds as you walk through the ancient ruins which were buried in ashes after Mount Vesuvius erupted almost 2000 years ago. You'll discover the everyday life of Rome's Imperial age at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and imagine the panic felt by the people in those last few minutes before the city was so disastrously buried.

On the trip back to Rome (approximately three hours), you'll stop at a coral and cameo factory, where you will have the opportunity to purchase examples of this ancient craft that dates back to the Greek period.

I booked this trip because I wanted to see Naples and get a few pictures. This tour was not what I wanted. We did not stop in Naples to get pictures or to look around. The lunch was not great and we had to pay for water. Pompeii was was good, but the tour guide was uninteresting. I'm very disappointed with this tour.

This was the worst trip. We spent 10 hours on the bus with Stephanae, our guide, reading a book and saying nothing. Thanks for Franco who was interesting and entertaining during our tour of Pompeii. This was one of the worst tours I have ever had except for the tour of Pompeii with Franco. Stephanae should not be a tour guide.

Just returned from a trip to Europe. This was the only one of four bookings that we were not completely pleased with. We signed up for an English speaking trip to Naples and Pompeii. The tour group had combined 2 groups on our journey, w/ translations in English and Spanish. So, it was a little confusing. When we reached Naples, the group going to Capri Island left, and we pretty much drove around in circles in Naples and saw the down town area under construction. We were not able to stop and take pictures around the water because of the construction, either. That was disappointing. Lunch was good, but be prepared to pay for your drinks--no tap water available! :) Pompeii was neat--great guide. I think they should just call this a trip to Pompeii, until the construction is finished in Naples.

Tour operator not well organised, sort of get the feeling your second class tourists. Got to Pompeii, tour guide was informative, when you could hear him. There were NO AUDIO HEADSETS provided. Other tour groups were wandering around with headsets, but not this mob.

Everything was great -- Thoroughly enjoyable. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I wished we were given enough time to go on the roof of the cathedral. I heard it was not to be missed......The tour only allowed 15 min in the cathedral -- by adding another 15 min those interested could go to the roof. Last Supper was spectacular especially with the story and background told by our guide

This is the only way we could have seen Pompeii. The geography of Mt. Cassino, of Bay of Naples, and 180 degrees of Mt. Vesuvius was memorable. Being a Spanish as well as English tour absorbed some time. Getting the Isle of Capri group to their boat also absorbed some time.

Pompeii was perfect! Our guide tour was the best; however, Naples was a terrible experience, nothing to do with the guide, but the city itself is a chaos.

I visited this trip in March 2012 and weather was wonderful and warm. Not much leaves in the trees though. It was very nice, that we had a pick-up from our hotel, although it was not in their hotel list. In return it did not apply anymore. But we were dropped less than 1 km from hotel. There were enough stops, although the stops were not good at all. I am sure there is better places to take tourists. The lunch was the worst during my trip in Italy. I wish the company would change the restaurant as well as the stops during the trip. It would have been nice to have at least 30 minutes free time in Napoli. Now there was just 5 minutes stop to take photos by the sea. Good that we had even that. Pompeii was good to see, but not something to return to. It would have be nicer, if the guide would have had some sort of microphone, so that we all could have heard, what he had to say. Stay in Pompeii was long enough. The bus was ok. There were guidance in several languages (English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese) and it is not that marvellous to hear everything time after time. Hopefully this feedback helps you to create better trips.

This tour would have have been better had we not stopped at the Cameo shop. If I had wanted to look at or buy cameos I would have made sure it was not attached to another tour. We wasted 45 minutes there, and there were a lot of complaints from other passengers as well. The tour was rushed and the tour guide was not the friendliest. We were not impressed when we saw the tour guide rush along and leave behind a young child in a wheel chair being pushed along the cobbles by his father and grandfather. There was a 10 minute stop in Naples and then off to Pompeii. Pompeii was great, it was amazing to see. As stated earlier, more time should be given to Pompeii.

We really enjoyed our day in Pompeii and Naples - it was superb! It was amazing to see the ruins of Pompeii and imagine how people once lived there. It must have been beautiful and a very welcoming atomosphere. The only issue we had was that the map is not really clear on what things are and there is no signage for what you are looking at. This was not really a problem and we did enjoy wandering in the ruins and exploring them anyway. It is definitely a nice trip -- the trip to the Cameo plant was interesting too and lunch was great! I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys seeing what Pompeii looked liked centuries ago. Cheryl and Fred, USA

The visit to Pompei was fantastic, however, this tour only allows you to be in the city for an hour and a half. Not enough time. They send you to Naples, the Detroit of Italy. Not worth it! Take a tour straight to Pompei, and skip Naples.

The tour guide from the company was great and the trip was well organized. _br/_ it was odd that we got lunch but no drinks included. The drinks were then charged at a very high price. We had 4 sodas, 3 teas and 1 coffee. The cost was 20 euros._br/_ The tour guide in Pompeii was not very good. An older gentleman who spoke softly and faced away from us when speaking. He also walked while talking so we did not hear half of the information. He then asked for tips at the end.

I embarked upon this journey at 7:30 am when I was picked up by a woman, not with the tour company, in a van. I didn't have time to finish my espresso at the hotel before I was shuffled to another location. The tour consisted of a 7 hour drive to Naples where we did a bus tour and were not allowed off to buy lunch (mind you, pizza was invented in Naples) or use the bathroom before going to the next location. Needless to say, it was impossible to enjoy. After Naples, we drove to a restaurant for lunch which was surprisingly good. The tour in Pompeii was fantastic and led by our tour guide Nando. However, nothing could make up for the events preceding and by the time we reached Pompeii my only goal was to get drunk enough to put up with more misgivings from the tour guide. She never told us how long it would take to get from one place to the next, which was really frustrating considering I was hungry and had to pee for much of our bus ride. I suppose that's what happens when you agree to take the ride. We returned to Rome without problems, but I wouldn't suggest this trip for anyone who has issue with long hours on a bus and being cast aside by inconsiderate, uninvolved tour "guides." The whole thing felt very cheap and I would not recommend it to anyone.

The Naples part was kind of dumb and the area was very run down. Not what I expected at all. The meal was not too great either. The only really good part was Pompei. This made the entire trip and I am glad we had a tour guide for it that was incredibly knowledgable because I have had friends visit and not hear most of the information we heard. All in all it was a pretty good trip.

The provided lunch was not what I expected. It was a three course meal and all three courses were less than satisfactory. Naples was but a pit-stop on the way to Pompeii, however I preferred it to be this way since Naples turned out to be quite ugly/scary/dirty in my opinion. Pompeii was amazing though. I would recommend getting yourself there some way or another!

The tour gets a low rating because only 2 hours was spent at Pompeii, which deserves much more. The tour of Naples is really a waste of time...it's not a pretty city, and you only get off the bus for a few minutes...the time would be better spent at Pompeii. The tour staff from Rome was great, but the 'local guide' at Pompeii was very old, slow moving, and hard to hear. In retrospect, I would go with a company that spent the whole day (or at least 4 hours) at Pompeii and skipped Naples. One last criticism...the Jewelry shop tour that seems mandatory for all the tour companies...what a waste of time. My thought is that the tour companies must get a percentage of all the money spent by their clients at this store...an irritating diversion.

Pompeii on its own is wonderful; there is so much to see. The bus ride from Rome is terrible. You take a “tour” of Naples from the bus, which drives you through the very busy streets of Naples. You get out at one place in Naples to take a picture and pick up another tour guide for Pompeii. Before you arrive in Pompeii you will stop at a coral “factory” where they will try to force you to buy overpriced jewelry. After the coral stop you will go to a restaurant for a terrible lunch. It was the worst meal we had on our seven day vacation. The choices for lunch were a piece of mystery meat with salad or two pieces of cheese with a salad and blood orange slices for dessert. The tour guide for Pompeii was rude to other visitors to Pompeii forcing them out of areas and making them move out of his way. We had less than two hours to spend at Pompeii before we had to go back on the bus; it wasn’t enough time at all. The tour was done in English and Spanish; it can get a little annoying to hear the same information repeated in two languages the entire day. I wouldn’t take this tour again.

We were in Italy 14 days and we took our tours with Viator, everything was great until the last two tours to Capri and Pompeii. Both tours were a very bad experience for us. The bus was shared with others who had their trip to Capri and delayed in leaving because people did not arrive on time. We had reached the bus at seven o'clock and it was nearly eight before it left. Then to make matters worse the bus was horrible, making noises because it was old and seats were not comfortable. They also made many stops in a cafe and then in Naples to smoke and then stopped again to leave the port of Capri, then more stops in a place where they sell coral and another stop at the restaurant where linger two hours and food very poor, finally at two o'clock we reached Pompeii. We spent two hours in Pompeii, with a very nice and great guide. But then we had to return to Rome, and again we stopped at the port to collect the Capri group which arrived half an hour late and then another stop at a cafe finally arrived at nine to Rome very tired and disappointed because we were only in the ruins of Pompeii two hours the day before we made the same tour to Capri and had a similar experience. Please keep in mind that what you want is to get to Capri or Pompeii to stay longer. I would not take this tour with this agency again.

We enjoyed the trip and exploring Pompeii. Lunch was tasty. The drive was long, but did nice for a nap. The group was booked for two languages which the guide did well with, but slowed the pace and amount of information when everything had to be repeated in each language. This caused many to wonder off or get lost as the guide was walking on showing things in the other language.... overall fun day though.

Pompeii was amazing and it was really beneficial to have a tour guide. Only drawback was the amount of bus time. Country side is nice to look at and they stop once half way in both directions to stretch your legs. Lunch on the tour is ok, but drinks are not included. Finally, could have skipped Naples all together...not much to see there at all.

Pompeii was truly a fascinating site. Had some trouble hearing the guide; the popular earphone technology would have been very useful there. Naples was interesting; some beautiful sights, but also some not so with trash lying around the streets and many hi-rises in need of repair. We went in the winter so the Mt Vesusius/Pompeii was not available. Think we would have preferred that trip another time of the year; the weather we experienced was cold and windy. Lunch was a true delight. All in all, a very nice day. I do think it was a little over-priced, as we took another full day (12 hrs) a couple days later which was more extensive for considerably less.

The trip was really interesting. However, the guide needed to use an audio so people could hear better. Time in Pompeii was only about 2 hours. Would have liked much more time in Pompeii. It was really not enough and there weren't any options to explore on your own. One sees only the highlights and there were lots of things I wanted to see, but only saw what the tour guide chose to show. If you've seen programs on Pompeii, the guide skipped some of the most interesting. This tour could exclude the visit to coral and cameo factory. It really was a waste of time. I just wanted to see Pompeii. If you come across the globe every moment counts. Naples was a sightseeing tour from the bus, which was appropriate and just the right amount of time.

Definitely worth the day excursion. Well informed tour guides. There was so much to look at in the maze of the city, the guides were a plus to make it thru everything. Took us all over Pompeii. Lunch was a nice touch, but wasn't impressed with the selection. Would have been nice to have the radio headsets for the pompeii tour, like the colosseum tour had.

Our recent day trip from Rome to Pompeii was very good, although it wasn't a luxury tour bus as mentioned in the description. It was more of a shuttle bus as we would say in the US. The trip was very nice with several stops that were fun and at appropriate times. The lunch was great; however, Americans usually don't eat that much food. The guided tour through Pompeii was very informative but slow. We could have seen a lot more of Pompeii if we could have moved along a little faster. The guide was stopping at each point of interest and describing everything in two languages. Maybe there should have been a guide for the Italian speaking and a guide for the English speaking. It was a long day and fun, and I would recommend this tour to everyone.

This day was well organised and efficient. We were picked up from our hotel at 7.15 am and didn't return until 8.30 pm. Our stop at a cafe for morning tea was a bunfight - 11 buses were there - the queues for fooddrinks and the ladies loo were ridiculous. Surely there is another cafe to stop at. We also stopped at a Cameo and Coral factory on the way down - their prices were very competitive. We stopped in Naples for photos all we needed really then headed on to New Pompeii for lunch- a very generous four courses unnecessary to have that much. We had a two hour tour of the ruins which was quite good but the group was too big 50 or so in the English speaking group which made it hard to hear and keep up some times. Franco, our guide, however painted an excellent picture of life in the homes of Pompeii of 79 AD. All in all a very full and rewarding day.

A long and tiring day, but thoroughly worthwhile. An excellent guide on the bus who spoke 4 languages including perfect English I think she was Russian the 'local guide' for Napoli and Pompeii, Franco be sure to roll those R's, was an older guy who really knows his stuff and also speaks perfect English. A man of dry humour that brightened an already warm and sunny day. Lunch only has an hour and so is served pretty quickly, but was of good quality and decent portions. The only negatives were a lack of leg room on the bus I'm 6 feet tall and had to sit pretty much fully upright all the way out and back and, in common with most other reviews, the pointless cameo 'workshop' visit. Overall, hugely worthwhile, just be prepared for the long day.

I HIGHLY recommend this trip! At first we weren't sure due to some previous negative reviews, but I am SO GLAD we did it. The trip to Naples was filled with lots of informative information about our surroundings. They provided plenty of stops to use the bathroom, get snacks, and stretch your legs. I really enjoyed the stop in Naples - it was JUST enough for us to get a sense of what it is like and to take some photos. The stop at the cameo factory was not super informativeexciting, but it did give us a chance to stretch our legs for awhile and to meet some of the other people on our tour. The tour of Pompeii was AMAZING - probably one of the best tours we took while in Italy. Our guide was great and he did a good job of covering everything there was to see. I would recommend this trip to EVERYONE! As an added bonus, they dropped us off at our hotel on the way back. Be prepared though, it begins at 730 am and you don't get back until approx 7 pm. Bring snacks!!
