Pompeii Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

Take a break from Rome's big-city bustle to discover the fascinating history of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius on this full-day guided tour from Rome. Perfect if your time in Italy is limited, this is the only day tour from Rome that visits both Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 25 people when exploring Pompeii and Vesuvius, ensuring you'll receive personalized attention from your knowledgeable guide.

After your transfer from Rome by air-conditioned coach, your tour into Rome's ancient history begins high above the city and Bay of Naples, on the crater of Mt. Vesuvius. Europe's only active volcano, Vesuvius is infamous for causing the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD and has erupted many times since - today it's regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Lava flows have scarred the sides of Mt. Vesuvius, and are visible on the winding road up to the summit. Hiking the active volcano is the only way to truly experience the magic of Mt. Vesuvius. The 20-minute upward hike to the crater takes you through soft volcanic ash and pumice, and the views from the top are worth the effort! Alternatively, you can stay on the ridge of the volcano and admire the views. After your adventurous morning, it's time to take a break and enjoy a leisurely lunch (included). Relax as you experience the world-famous pizza Naples is so well known for.

Next stop is Pompeii, sitting in the ominous shadow of Vesuvius. During your personalized tour of Pompeii's remarkably well preserved ruins, you'll discover why this UNESCO World Heritage Site continues to shock and fascinate over 2.6 million people who venture here each year.

The now ruined city of Pompeii was once a sprawling metropolis of shops and residences, restaurants, gyms and brothels. You can walk Pompeii's main streets just as the ancient Romans did - the stones are still worn with tracks from the drawn carriages that used them nearly 2,000 years ago. You'll also visit the forum, the center of Pompeii's political and social life, and view the startling plaster death casts of the victims of the catastrophic eruption that destroyed the city of Pompeii.

Traveling between November and March? Mount Vesuvius is inacessible, so you will visit the National Archeological Museum of Pompeii instead.

One of the best excursions of the trip to Europe tour guide and site guide were both very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!!

Pompeii is impressive but I do not want to write the same things as other travelers. My review will only add few important details. We really liked our tour guide - he was knowledgeable and very customer oriented. He considered such small but important things on the tour, such as bathroom stops. The route of the bus was developed in a way that we were able to stop at café or convenient store or gas station every 1.5 hours. Also, I like the fact that we were given credit for the unfortunate break down of our bus on the way back to Rome. We were waiting for another bus less than an hour and still the company gave us some portion of the price of tour back because of this small inconvenience. Thank you for the great trip and service.

We had the most wonderful guide, Georgia. She really took care of us. She was also a great historian. Take something to snack on because lunch is after 200. You need to wear good shoes for the climb, no sandals.

The guide stayed with us the entire time and provided very personalized service. She was very knowledgeable about both Vesuvius and Pompei even though we had a separate guide for Pompei. The Pompei guide was the son of one of the more recent excavators and provided a comprehensive, knowledgeable tour with integrity and respect. The Neapolitan pizza lunch was better than the mediocre food that often comes with these tours. Look for Viator when in Italy.

Great trip! We had adults and teenagers and we all thought it was very fun and interesting. It is a bit of a walk up Mt Vesuvius but worth it, the pizza provided is great and they included wine if you wanted it. The tour of Pompeii was very informative but not too much, just right. Our leader Rachelle was perfect! She was so knowledgable about all of ROME and the trip, very helpful and friendly! She even offered help on restaurants and spoke about other tours or cool things to see while we were on the long 3 hour drive. We also had a family that kept being late and she kept her patience with them, overall she went above and beyond to make sure our OVERALL trip to Rome was great. THANKS!

The day trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius was extraordinary! My only wish was that we could stay on the mountain just a bit longer. It was a bit of a hike to get to the top and I just wanted to savior the experience, the view and the moment longer then we had. Pompeii was awesome. Over all a big highlight for our trip.

This was one of the best trips I have had with Viator. Both the hostess Ms Shreya and the ocal guide at Pompeii were just fantastic. The cloud covered Mt Vesuvius climg was most enjoyable. The Pompeii visit was very educating - so much development 2000 years ago. It was value for money.

Trip was great! The hike up Mt. Vesuvius definitely gets the heart pumping, no need for a jacket once you start hiking. Pompeii was more than I imagine, definitely recommend to anyone visiting Italy to include in their plans.

This was a well organised and very informative tour, with plenty of necessary breaks on the journey. The local tour guide at Pompeii was extremely good, both informative and amusing and Massimo the guide for the day was excellent. Vesuvius is not that inspiring, but it does tick another box to say you have been to the top, but Pompeii was fabulous - all that I hoped for and more

Excellent and when else will you get the chance to climb an active volcano and to see the actual excavation site of Pompeii. Both guides that we had one for VesuviusRome and the other in Pompeii were excellent. Our reason for not giving an overall excellent rating is the time involved. It was a 3-plus hour bus trip there and the same coming back! 6 hours is a long time to give up for transit while on vacation. I recommend you dump the bus and change to train service instead with coach in Napoli to get to Vesuvius and Pompeii it would be much quicker and will save lots of time.

I do not recommend this tour for a family with little kids. 10 year-old kids should have no problem. I wish I had more time in Pompeii, but it was a very good tour and worth it.

The only negative to this was that the Vesuvius tourism workers went on strike the day we were going to visit, so we could not do the hike. However, Viator substituted a trip to the Volcano Sulfrada, which was possibly even more engaging.

This tour was amazing. We felt a little rushed walking up Mt. Vesuvius since we were only given an hour to hike up and back. It was probably because we hit traffic on the way and we needed to be on schedule. Lunch in Naples was really good too. The waiters were pretty generous with their wine pours. Overall, this tour was great and we highly recommend it.

This was our most anticipated tour of our 15 day European trip. Mother nature was cross!! it rained and we never even saw Vesuvius!! The tour had only been cancelled 3 times in the 6 years our guide had been doing it. The Sat and Sun we were there were 2 of the times very disappointing but the guide was great. However all of us on the tour think they should have expanded the time we spent in Pompeii in exchange but there was a different guide for the town and he rushed us through I have been before but it was my husbands first time and we were herded past many major sights a 'too busy' but never got back to them neither did he explain what they were. Always take your own soft ear phones they are much better to wear than the ones supplied.

It was very interesting and impressive. Our main guide was funny and helped us a lot, our guide in Pompeii gave a lot of interesting information. Lunch was OK. I reccomend this tour to have a look at Vesuvius crater and remains of Pompeii.

A fun trip - the main guide Rachel was fantastic. Giorgio the guide for Pompeii was very knowledgeable. The lunch was good, a glass of wine and pizza, and the hike up Vesuvious was a nice walk. My only one complaint is that the driver didn't run the air conditioner on the way back and it got toasty on that bus. He said it was on but it looked to me like it was just the fan and not the air-conditioning. Ah well the rest was well worth it!
