Waitomo Glowworm Caves Discovery Tour from Rotorua

Depart Rotorua in the morning and travel over the scenic Mamaku Ranges as the tour heads west to Waitomo. Enjoy a gourmet lunch-box aboard the bus as you travel through the picturesque countryside to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, passing by beautiful Lake Karapiro, popular for kayaking and rowing.
 
On arrival at the caves, start your tour by exploring the main chambers. View the impressive stalactites and stalagmites, created by the constant dripping of water over thousands of years. Later, board your boat and head down river to the grotto. As your eyes become accustomed to the darkness, you will see a faint band of light that surrounds you, these are the glowworms. Be entranced by thousands of tiny living lights hanging like ropes of pearls from the ceiling of the cave.

After your caves tour, re-board the coach for your return journey to Rotorua. passing through the Fitzgerald Glade, a section of the highway where the native bush grows right up to the roadside and the trees form a canopy overhead like a tunnel.

The caves are amazing and very peaceful. Once your eyes become accustomed to the darkness, the glowworms are revealed. Well worth a visit.

The tour to the caves was very short.That day,the bus broke down,so since the company had to bring another bus,we lost 25 minutes and we reached the caves shortly before 10 a.m.The tour was only 45 minutes and then the drivers hurried us back to the bus to Rotorua in less than 10 minutes.We didn't have time to look around.In addition,the driver that was driving us back to Rotorua didn't stop talking over the mike for 2 hours all the way to Rotorua.It is OK to be informative and give details about the country,but his commentary was too much.So,we actually spent 4 hours on the bus back and forth and only 45 minutes in the caves.Not worth it!

Interesting tour. Too big of a group on the tour making it difficult to hear the tour guide. The tour is only 45 minutes. The bus ride from Rotorua was 2 hours each way.
