Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg

Salzburg, Austria

Journey through the Bavarian Alps, via the Alpenstrasse, along the King's Lake River to the Obersalzberg - famous for Hitler's retreat, the Eagle's Nest. Here, the highlight of your tour awaits as you tour the 450-year-old salt mines. Wearing traditional miners' clothes, you enter the mines and hear historic as well as legendary tales of the fascinating underground world.

Using the same slides as hundreds of miners before, you descend to the grottos, the magical world beneath the surface of the earth. You end your adventure with a raft sail on the salt lake and a special train trip.

The tour will both amaze and educate you into this underground world, great fun for all ages! Afterwards there will be a short visit to the town of Berchtesgaden before returning to Salzburg.

Fabulous tour! We had some initial difficulties (because Viator didn't disclose the tour-company name, and there were several tour companies providing this 'type' of tour once we arrived to claim our booking), but it all worked out once we managed to communicate that the booking had been through Viator.

Good day trip up to the Bavarian mountains to visit the Salt-Mines. Compared to other trips, I can't really rave about this one. Tour guide placed 4 German speaking people into a group of 25 English speaking people, and then proceeding to play (during the tour of the mines) an English audio to explaining the relevance of everything we saw, only to speak quite loudly in German to ensure the 4 German speaking people could understand what was going on. Downside, we couldn't hear the audio over the guide, so we got to look at old interesting (I'm sure) mining equipment, but didn't take any learnings away about the history of the place.

The idea of viewing salt mines sounds more interesting than it actually is. You could find out the same information if you googled it. Going into the salt mine was interesting though and a bit scary. We had a German tour guide for the mine and he spoke no English, so that was unfortunate. They had audio guides, but they failed to fully explain how they functioned, so we missed some of the narrative. They seemed too interested in taking pictures they wanted to sell you. They do not allow pictures to be taken on this tour and I'm guessing it is because the want to sell you pictures they have taken. Boating across the 'mirror lake', which is more or less a pond, was one of the highlights. Taking the two slides was fun, but less fun than it looks like it would be. If you don't take this tour, you're not missing anything special. The tour guide on the bus was informative about Salzburg and the surrounding area. He seemed a little perturbed if you asked him any questions (not sure why), but he did answer the questions.

This was an informative, fun and totaly original experience. Suitable for any age. your journey starts on a little train, then you take the slide into the heart of the mine. The audio guide is really interesting and visual effects add to the experience. Mirror lake is stunning, the ceilings reflection actually looks like a floor until the boat moves through it. We had young and old on our tour and it was equally enjoyed by all. The tour guide on the coach too and from the salt mine was excellent, informative and amusing. I would highly recommend this to anyone

This event is very, very fun! tours was running late getting everybody to the mine, so when we arrived, everybody was pretty frantic trying to get ready and boarded. The staff at the mines weren't too friendly because of our tardiness (not the tourists fault). BUT!!! Once the tour of the mines started, we had a BLAST!!! We didn't really know what to expect and this tour, but we laughed and enjoyed the fun. Don't miss it! Hopefully others will have better luck with the tour group's organization.

Very nice tour. Guide was great in pointing out places and talking about the area. Salt mine tour was nice. Stop in Berchtesgaden was very nice, long enough to eat at a restaurant. Please be aware though that even if tour picks you up at your hotel, they do not return you to hotel. You must walk or make other arrangements.

It was a perfect experience. The train trip into the mine, the sleigh rides there were two and the short boat trip on salt were fantastic to us. We had our 11-year-old son with us and he had an absolutaley fantastic time. It was probably the most amazing experience he had had during our stay in Salzburg. When I applied for this tour, I doubted whether the sleigh ride would be dangerous but there was nothing dangerous at all, even for toddlers. It is a place people who are planning to visit Salzbug should definetely see. However, on the way back to Salzburg we dropped by a small beautiful town called Berchtesgaden. We had only 40 minutes to visit the town and have lunch. So, it wasn't enough at all.

I went on this tour to the salt mines four years ago and since they have totally renovated it. I would have recommended it before halfway, but with all the new fixes and totally new buildings I say this is a must do! Especially with older kids or for those in technicalscientific professions. But don't worry, everyone enjoys a different part---especially the slides!!!

This was a fun tour for our family, children ages 5 and 7. The tour guide was great fun and the tour of the Salt Mines was interesting. The pace of the Salt Mines tour was perfect, but the guide did not speak English so we had headset which my children found fun to wear. They also liked wearing the mining outfits.

I really enjoyed the salt mine tour as well as the drive through the Bavarian mountains and would even do this tour again if I am lucky enough to go back to Salzburg. It is a bit cool once you get into the mine, so I would recommend a sweatshirt or light jacket to wear underneath the coveralls they give you. The only reason I didnt give the tour five stars was because of the stop at Berchtesgaden, Germany. You only get 45 minutes, but the tour guide recommends you stop for lunch at one of the cafes. Knowing how slow European restaurants are at least compared to the US, I went directly to one of the cafes so I would have the full 45 minutes. Well, that was not even enough time! The food had just started to come out when the 45 minutes were up and we were all due back at the bus. We asked the waitresses to wrap up our food, and not knowing that I understand a bit of German, the waitresses started complaining about Americans. So, during the stop in Berchtesgaden I would highly recommend that you just stroll through town and maybe get a snack I know there was an ice cream vendor around. Trying to go to a caf is not only stressful but a huge waste of time!

We enjoyed this tour. This tour was a combined Eagles Nest and Saltmine Tour, the bus dropped us off at the Saltmine, while the others went on to Eagles Nest. To enter the saltmine we had to wear very ugly overalls, which were very funny but kept our clothes clean. To reach the mine we rode on a little train into the mountain and then slid down a long wooden slide to the depths of the mine. This was great fun. There were two slides during the tour. Our miner tour guide spoke little English and pressed a button for the English commentary at each stop in the mine and after it was over called dis vay and strode on ahead. Some of the tunnels were damp under foot. The displays explained how the salt was mined, which was an interesting surprise others were about salt itself or the machinery used. The return to the surface was via a funicular elevator and then a return train trip. You can purchase photos taken while on the slide and train ride and there is an extensive shop. We waited outside for our bus to return to collect us. The bus returned and took us to Obersalzburg to meet the group returning from Eagles Nest. There is a shop at Obersalzburg where you can buy souvenirs of Eagles Nest. The scenery is very impressive. There was a lunch stop at Berchtesgaden before a return to Salzburg.

Salt mines was very interesting, the English during the toor was a little diffiocult and quet as it was played via speakers whilst the German guide was talking. Fantastic drive to the mountain, and great viewing oportunity! Little village we visited after was lovely and can get some great photos of the Alps. Our driver was very good and infrmative and his English was perfect!
