Christmas Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride from Salzburg

Your full day winter excursion takes you along the Salzach river valley past many of Austria's ski resorts. Near Schladming, location of the 1982 Ski World Championships, you will ascend up to the "Steirische Ramsau" 3,281 feet (1,000 meters) above sea level at the base of one of the Alpine glacier massifs - the Dachstein.

In the village there is time for a stroll in the frosty fresh air and lunch in one of the local inns. Your guide will give you advice on all of the possibilities. Then you will hear the jingling bells on the reigns as the sleighs line up across the field and your winter sleigh ride begins!

A stop for refreshments is made along the way where the horses rest and you have the opportunity to try some Austrian specialties.

Rosy cheeks and happy expressions are proof that it was a successful day - one that you will remember long afterwards. Your destination may be altered depending on snow conditions on the day.

The Christmas Sleigh ride from Salzburg was a fantastic day. Organisation was terrific and it snowed while we were there which was a real bonus. Would recommend this to anyone staying in Salzburg at Christmas. A bit of advice. Take plenty of warm face protection during the sleigh ride as your face will get very cold if is is snowing during the ride as it was for our experience.

I had a fantastic time, it was quite magical. While we were on the sleigh a group of little kids chased us and jumped on the back for a ride which was cute. Only complaint was that we got split from our group.

Brilliant! Our tour guide Andy was great and we had loads of fun! My only feedback is to specify how long the actual tour is as we got back at about 5pm and all we had on our voucher was 1hr sleigh ride. If I knew how late it would get back I'd have skyped my family in Australia for Christmas before leaving. Cheers.

A truely magical Christmas treat. With plenty of snowfall, days before our arrival, the surrounding scenery was beautiful. The view from the coach window was stunning. For the first leg of our sleigh ride we were bathed in glorious sunshine so be prepared with a pair of sunglasses. After a quick warming refreshment stop (snowball fight for the children) we headed out for the second half of the round trip, this time through thick snowflakes. Make sure to wear plenty of layers and cover yourself well. The sleigh ride itself was exhilarating at times but smooth overall (my wife, pregnant at the time, will vouch for that). The sleigh itself is fitted with retractable wheels with which the friendly and skillfull driver can engage whenever the surface gets a little uneven. The restaurant our tour guide adviced us to try was perfectly fine and reasonably priced. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and would recomend it to all. The sound of those sleigh bells will stay with me forever.

Trip was fantastic. First Xmas in the snow and it didn't disappoint. The sleigh ride was actually for 2 hrs and was magical. Would definitely recommend and would love to do it again. 1 tip - Wear extra socks. It was freezing.

Excellent trip - thoroughly enjoyed it. Would recommend for scenery alone . The stop off half way on the sledge was a good idea by which time a hot drink was welcome. Time after to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant or wander round resort and into the shops.

A magical and unforgettable way to spend Christmas Day. It was the highlight of our five day stay in Salzburg. The tour guides were brillant from the moment they picked us up at our hotel. The mountain views were spectacular and for anyone looking for an alternative to turkey on christmas day try the beef goulash and dumplings for lunch.

Leaving Salzburg to head to the sleigh ride we drove through the local area and through the mountain areas for the next 1 and a half hours. Once arriving at the sleigh ride destination we had lunch then boarded the sleigh ride. Due to the lack of snow at this time we were concerned that it wasnt going to be as good. But luckily there was a bit of snow and the sleigh ride went for approx 1 and a half hours on the roads through the local village and then finally on the snow to get back to the starting point. The sleigh ride itself was wonderful! Certainly rug up to keep warm! They activity took up the whole day travelling, stopping for breaks at road side stops and then a long lunch for 2 hours. We felt we could have left later and gone straight to the sleigh ride and not had to spend the whole morning at particular stops which were not really necessary. But never the less it was a wonderful experience and we would recommend it to anyone for something a bit different!

We did the trip on 31 December 2009. It was overpriced in our opinion, since the more or less only interesting part of the trip was a horse riding. But there was hardly any snow and the route wasn't very romantic. Also we spent 2 hours in total in some touristic shops as a apart of the route. On the way back from the hourse riding we were brought to some place to eat. The place was too small for the group and there was no place to sit inside !!! To be honest we were dissapointed.

We really enjoyed our Christmas Sleigh Ride. The day was gorgeous and the scenery sublime. Our guide was wonderful and very knowledgeable. We took away a great deal of information regarding the area and history. Careful if you have any allergies -we found out our daughter was allergic to the horses when she started with her eyes tearing and swelling. Bring an allergy medicine. It was a wonderful experience otherwise!!

Do not do this trip! The tour leader was unclear and kept talking on and on about things like roadworks, annoying the whole bus. It was raining and miserable with no shelter and it was a horse drawn cart ride, not a sleigh ride. The service at the place we were taken to was terrible and we did not get half of our order and what we did get was not cooked properly. I travel with many tours and this is the first time I have complained. I am so disappointed with this tour.

The tour looked to good to be true, but it was more than good, it was exceptional. I cannot fault the day. The guides, transport, sleighs etc were fabulous. And the sleigh ride itself, well it was beyond our wildest dreams. If you are in Europe around Christmas, make a trip to Salzburg and do the tour, no more can be said. And our teenage boys - 16 and 14 - loved it as well.

This was by far the greatest thing we did while in Salzburg. If I could do it all over again, I would have stayed in one of the bed and breakfasts in Ramsau. It is very beautiful, and there is tons of snow and winter sporting activities.
