La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour

This is the most popular kayak tour. If you can ride a bike you can kayak. After a brief paddle instruction and safety talk, you take your kayak down to the beach. And launch your kayaks from La Jolla Shores and paddle to the La Jolla Sea Caves taking in the gorgeous views and watching for the abundant wildlife. You can see numerous types of sea birds and usually sea lions, seals and sometimes dolphins. You then kayak into the fascinating kelp beds of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and enjoy the surf zone on your way back. Kayaking is fun for all ages! No experience necessary.

What to Expect: Be prepared to get wet! For safety reasons, the tour operator does NOT guarantee going into the caves on tours. Entrance to caves based on ocean conditions, safety and participants ability as determined by guide.

This tour is recommended for ages 6 and up. Participants must be able to swim.

A few words of warning about this tour: Firstly, entrance into the caves is dependent on the weather conditions. We did not get to go in the caves, and our guide said that they don't go in very often in the winter. Also, you WILL get wet, and I mean thoroughly wet, so be prepared and rent a wetsuit, or bring a change of clothes. That being said, we really had a nice time kayaking in the Pacific! I rented a tandem kayak with my 11 yr old son and even though we are both amateurs, we managed to keep up with the group and launch and land through the surf with no problems. The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. This is a good tour for anybody - you don't need to be an expert kayaker. Without going in the caves, there wasn't much else to do, but we saw sea lions and went to the kelp forest (not that you could see it) and it was still a worthwhile experience.

This activity was definitely exciting for 1st timers. I came not knowing what to expect because my swimming is horrible, but overall it all turned out great. I'd recommend this to anyone. Also check out the beach - it's gorgeous!

Excellent! A different perspective of the caves. We had sea lions swimming near us which was great. Guide was very good. No experience needed.

Kayaking in the ocean is the best thing ever, just understanding that you out there only with kayak and a paddle makes you feel wonderful. It's absolutely worth it! Going into caves pumps some adrenaline to your blood, because of those waves and their sounds, but once you go through, it's awesome, and you want more!!

If you are looking for something different to do on the weekend, this is great by yourself or with a group of friends. The best part of my trip was seeing the huge stingrays swim right underneath the kayak.
