Gordon River Cruise from Strahan

Strahan, Australia

Glide past ancient rainforests as you sip Tasmanian wine and sample fine local cheeses on a Gordon River Cruise from Strahan. With a choice of seating on either a morning or afternoon departure, your six-hour cruise on the Gordon River allows plenty of time to explore Strahan and surrounding area, the gateway to Tasmania's World Heritage Area.

Come aboard the fastest, smoothest, most comfortable cruise boat on Tasmania's West Coast, Lady Jane Franklin II, to journey deep into a land lost in time. Your cruise begins in the waterfront village of Strahan, heads towards the open sea at the spectacular Hell's Gate, then crosses Macquarie Harbour to the calm lower reaches of the mighty Gordon River. In the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, marvel at the riverside rainforest, perfectly reflected in the river's waters, then take a walk into the timeless green of the forest at Heritage Landing.

At Hell's Gate, you'll feel the power of the sea and understand why mariners gave the place its name.

On Sarah Island, hear an enthralling actor tell stories of the days when convicts labored to cut logs of Huon Pine, to craft the timber into sturdy ships. The cruise ends with an early afternoon return to Strahan, in plenty of time to discover more about the town and its surroundings. Browse through the Wild Rivers Store and the Thylacine and Endangered Species Center.

Your seating options include:

  • Atrium Seating - All forward seating, spacious seating with a number of styles to choose from. Includes buffet lunch
  • Window Recliner - All forward seating with full length windows for exceptional views. Includes buffet lunch
  • Captain's Premier Upper Deck - Luxury seating and exclusive deck space plus your own dedicated nature guide/steward. Includes fine food, wine and local Tasmanian beer. Gourmet lunch will consist of smoked salmon, ocean trout, Tasmanian game meat and a selection of Tasmanian produce including local cheeses.

I'm sorry, everything was beautiful, but the food, the worst food ever. i didn't eat it. In the brochures lovely, fresh produce. Why couldn't you offer tea and coffee at least after our meal. A piece of fresh fruit even. Anything. Sorry, i'm very easily pleased - but i wouldn't recommend your cruise to anybody. Charge more, so we can have basics. 3/10

A most enjoyable cruise. The stop off at Sarah Island was the highlight. Our Sarah Island guide was little less than brilliant. The on board guide was also excellent. Her pride in being part Tasmanian aboriginal added to her charm. _br/_ Excellent cuisine and with only 40 passengers we had great liberty. I wonder whether a fully booked trip would be as enjoyable. Certainly, I would recommend the trip to anyone.

It was a wonderful experience and the highlight of our trip to Tasmania. Every aspect of the experience from the comfort of the boat, the friendliness of the crew, the knowledge and indeed humour and wit of the Captain made it all memorable. The food was first class and plentiful. The nature walk excellent and the Sarah Island guide was terrific too. The value for money makes it worth every cent. I wouyld recommend this trip to anyone.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Gordon River Cruise and found that the whole booking system through Viator ran very smoothly. Thank you for your prompts to print out etickets. This was done and we handed them to the ticket office and the tickets were printed out without any problem. All ran very smoothly. All in all, very enjoyable. We also used Viator to book the Heritage Railway trip and all ran smoothly with that also.

This trip was stunning. I guess it helped that the day was sunny in the midst of rainy days. Our tour guide was excellent and passionate about the World Heritage forest. She made the trip very interesting with her knowledge and humour. It was magical to glide along the Gordon River on the top outside deck of the "Lady Jane Franklin". The weather was calm and warm which added to the amazing ambiance. The short excursions off the boat were good and broke up the day. This is when we saw the forest up close. Food was good with plenty for everyone. The local salmon was beautiful. You could buy drinks. We bought the Atrium tickets (the cheapest) and had good seats. As you can move virtually all over the ship the dearer seats were not necessary. All in all a great cruise well worth doing.

I travelled to Strahan from Barossa Valley specifically to do this trip after a previous visit to Tassie in which I had no time to do it....I'm so glad that I did. I highly recommend this trip. It will take you to breathtaking scenery and the the staff on board have a wealth of information on the area that they share on the journey. The captains knowledge of the history of the area was outstanding as was his informative guide at the fish farm. Our hostess Irene gets a gold star for her friendly welcome and for ensuring everyone's comfort. Her passion for the flora and fauna of the area was evident in the heritage landing walk, she was truly outstanding. Our tour guide for Sarah Island provided a step back in time experience in a manner that was so much fun. A wonderful meal provided in comfort. I had booked the lower deck but on the day there was no-one booked upstairs on the premium deck so they kindly let us sit upstairs and while the seats were a little more plush than lower deck, I would have been quite happy down below but certainly appreciated being on the upper deck. This is a truly memorable experience and well worth the cost. I will be going back and doing it again when I can find someone to do the kayak experience with me! Loved it.

Great trip with excellent staff and amenities. Seating is extremely comfortable with great views and the lunch was an absolute standout. Our only critique would be the starting time, another hour in bed for a weary traveller would have been good. Maybe 9.30a.m. rather than 8.30 would be better at this time of year when only one cruise per day is possible.

Impossible to put into words the sublime beauty of the Gordon River, you need to experience this cruise for yourself. Friendly attentive staff and GREAT food but the real joy of the day is outside the boat... Macquarie Harbour, Sarah Island and the Gordon River, all so so beautiful. Make sure to book the Captains upper deck, well worth the extra money!!!!

All great, from start to finish. Highlights were walk offshore, in the mist and rain! and the superb tour of sarah Island. It wa spouring, so only those who had wet weather gear could emjoy it, but the guide wa sfabulous, and it was great. History came alive. I would only suggest a recommendation to future travellers to come prpeared for all weathers...it is Tasmania after all.
