Tasmania West Coast Wilderness Railway Tour

Strahan, Australia

Discover one of the world's great railway journeys! Now, after 40 years, the West Coast Wilderness Railway in Tasmania is running again. You're able to travel through one of the world's last pristine wilderness areas crossing 40 bridges, wild rivers, and climb over 200 meters on a fascinating journey between Queenstown and Strahan. You'll also have the opportunity to visit an old gold mining settlement, explore the mine by candlelight and pan for gold in the river.

The historic 35 kilometer railway of tight curves and spectacular bridges clambers through rugged wilderness, dense rainforest and steep gorges, a legacy to the engineering skills, determination and endurance of the early 19th century West Coast pioneers who built it. Since 1896, the railway has hauled copper concentrates from the Queenstown mines to the port of Strahan, providing the only access and lifeline for the communities along the way.

Join the train seated in Tourist or Premier cars that feature natural Tasmanian timbers. The train will meet at Dubbil Barril where Fettlers lunches or afternoon teas are available from the train, or why not try 'Dotties' coffee shop in Queenstown for a fine selection of light refreshments, before or after your journey.

Options:

  • Tourist Carriage - One way Tourist class rail journey with coach transfers back to Strahan or Queenstown. Includes a packed lunch.
  • Premier Carriage - One way Premier class rail journey with coach transfers back to Strahan or Queenstown. Includes gourmet lunch, snacks, wine and beer, dedicated guide/steward plus a souvenir guide book.

Wonderful tour, premium class is definitely worth the money. Drinks are provided and the food is amazing. The trip itself is full of historical facts and such breath taking scenery. The staff are informative and fun and overall it was a really enjoyable day for all ages

My wife and I traveled in the premium class and, although on the surface seemed expensive, it was worth every cent. Our carriage had its own hostess, who pampered us all the way with excellent food and wine. The stops along the way were quite breathtaking. An extremely enjoyable five hours.

My third trip and just as rewarding. Fellow passengers from WA commented that many attractions have at least one spot that lives up to the promotional photo, but every view and moment on the trip was just as good as the previous one. I agree.

Trip was great. It would have been cheaper to buy tickets at the attraction, but it was good to have a guaranteed seat before the trip

Most enjoyable. Premium class seemed a little pricey though. Information about the departure times of trains from Strahan & Queenstown was confusing. Some explanation about how trains depart each morning from both origins and meet in the middle would have clarified this for us.

What a wonderful experience! My husband and I treated ourselves to the Premier Class Tour, and can't speak highly enough of it. The people running the tour were lovely and gave us lots of very interesting information about the trains and how they started. You are greeted with a glass of sparkling wine as you arrive, and then they bring out lots of lovely food and drinks all through the tour. There are many photo shoot opportunities as well. We would certainly recommend this tour.

My wife and I were made welcome when we stepped onto the train. All the way through the journey we were extremely well catered for, nothing was too much trouble. The commentary was excellent, the scenery was great, one could well imagine the hardship and sheer hard work required to complete the project. I doubt if today we could find people who would be prepared to accept the hardship and the isolation without the modern day things that we now take for granted. You have a wonderful tourist attraction, please keep on taking full advantage of the heritage you have. A very big thank you.

The train trip is well worth taking the time to enjoy. We had been on the harbour and river cruise on an earlier trip to Tasmania. We had enjoyed that trip so much that the train trip was the obvious adventure on this trip to the Apple Isle. Strahan is a fantastic place and a place everybody should make it a goal to visit. The people there will make you extremely welcome. We loved it, and others will too.
