2-Day Mt Fuji, Hakone and Bullet Train Tour from Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Escape the big-city bustle to explore Mt Fuji, stay in scenic Hakone then zoom back to Tokyo by Bullet train on this overnight jaunt. You'll cruise Lake Ashi, take a ride on the Mt Komagatake aerial cableway, soothe away your cares in a hot spring bath in Hakone and have a day free to explore this exquisite resort town.

Your tour begins with a relaxing coach trip to Mt Fuji, Japan's highest mountain. You'll visit the Fuji visitor center to see cultural art dedicated to Fujisan, cruise Lake Ashi and ride the aerial cableway to the top of Mt Komagatake for superb views over Hakone National Park.

You'll then stay the night at Hakone, famous for its hot springs (known as onsen) and natural beauty, with a choice of two accommodation options.

Next day you'll have the whole day free to explore Hakone at your leisure, with a one-day Hakone pass provided free of charge. The pass covers the Hakone Tozan Bus/Train/Cable Car, Hakone Ropeway, Hakone Sightseeing Ship, Numazu Tozan Tokai Bus and Odakyu Express Bus.

You'll then make your own way to Odawara Station by local bus or train to return to Tokyo by Shinkansen Bullet train, arriving at around 8pm. Note that your Shinkansen reservation cannot be changed, and travel time is around 40-60 minutes.

This tour is definitely worth taking, but is not without risks. Access to Mt Fuji beyond the visitor center is subject to weather, and we are told by the guide this is possible only about 80+days a year. We were fortunate to be able to ascent, as the frozen road de-iced by late morning, after being told en-route from Tokyo that access for the day is closed. Hakone, especially Gora is definitely another highlight._br/_ If you do choose to stay overnight, try not to stay at the lakeside annex of the Prince Resort. We did, thinking it would afford a nice view of Lake Ashi. However, this turned out to be the lowest point of our trip. The lakeside annex of the resort is certainly not up to standard and both the rooms (we had to change room once) were cramped and very dated. Stains were clear on the wallpapers, everything was very basic. Also be sure to make dinner reservations before arrival or your choice will be very limited._br/_ Fortunately for us, Hakone and Gora especially made up for the accommodation low-point!_br/_ Overall, worth doing but choose the right accommodation please.

Very well organized bus tour. The tour guide was excellent, knowledgeable and great customer service. We learned a lot from the guide on history, environment, political and social aspect of Tokyo and Japan. Strongly recommend to continue this service to tourists. It made up with the usual cloudy and foggy day at the 5th station. _br/_ Our side trip around Hakone was great. Some suggestions would be helpful for those tourists that don't speak Japanese: better information on how to take transportation around Hakone to avoid losing the valuable time for the one-day city exploration.

Great first day, we had amazing views of Fuji, the weather was clear all day and the guide was very knowledgeable. However, I was the only one of about 30 people who stayed on for the second night and as a result I was left to fend for myself in Hakone with vague advice from the guide as to how I might get back to Tokyo. Luckily, the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and arranged a shuttle bus for me. Still, I had to check out of the hotel at 11am and cart my luggage around until the Bullet train left at 6pm. Hakone is very beautiful though and if I had not been travelling alone I am sure it would have been a much more pleasant experience

Awesome trip to Mt Fuji. You will take the bus up the mountain. Then a boat ride across the lake and up an air rail car. After wards, they drop you off at the hotel of your choice. There is only 1 resturant at the hotel, so before you get there, if you want other foods, get it before or you will be spending between 2000 yen or more on food. On day 2, you are given the free pass. You have to plan your own trip around Hakone. There are lots to do and see, so be prepared. After that you take a rail car home. Overall great trip but just wish there was more choices on food.

The guided portion of the tour was excellent, I would highly recommend it as a must do while in Japan. My only issue was with the second day of the trip, I would prefer a guided or on both days. Trying to navigate around a place you never been on public transportation and not being able to speak the language was rather daunting. Beautiful area and excellent service.

The tour itself was pretty good, and the tour guide was full of information. Our accommodation that night was really disappointing. After requesting a non-smoking room, the room we went into stunk so badly and when I went to ask to change rooms they said they didn’t have any non-smoking rooms at all. It was also dirty, the hotel service was terrible, and even though we requested a double they didn’t even make the two singles into a double bed. The restaurants run by the hotel are expensive and not good, and there is limited food in the town. I know this is not the tours fault but I was really upset for the amount I paid for the whole package. When we went to leave the next day and tried to use our Hakone free pass which is included in the tour, we couldn't even use it on the bus that goes to the train station and had to pay 15 each for it... a bit annoying when you are on a "tour". I had booked and discovered the rest of our Japan holiday by myself with great success and I won't be using tours again. PS. Mt Fuji is beautiful though!

After viewing Mt Fuji, there's no place to enjoy a decent dinner. We are literally trapped in Hakone resort and the restaurants closed too early. It's the same the next morning; difficult to find breakfast. Also no one suggested that we take the cruise ship to Moto Hakone. Check out time is too early for us to try to enjoy the resort.

My mother and I stayed at the Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, a good hotel! We walked 10 minutes to the Keio Plaza hotel for the tour pickup. The pickup point was well posted near the hotel reception. There were many like us that day. The tour guide was not there early to attend to early comers and give out confirmation slips. So the bus left Keio Plaza hotel late to connect us to the tour bus at the bus terminal to Mt Fuji. We rode for an hour and half before the first designated stop and toilet break. Then onwards another half hour to the 5th station of Mt Fuji. The guide on board the bus, was cheerful and gave interesting commentary. He was also very helpful in attending to each traveler's needs, mostly on catching the train back to Tokyo. We had good views of Mt Fuji from various points up the mountain and when taking the cable car. The boat cruise was short about 15 minutes, but was enjoyable and with beautiful views. The tour bus dropped us right in front of our hotel in Hakone Yumoto Fujima. The hotel is on a hill with good green views yet a short walk from the train station. Room is large with both western beds and tatami beds, they will set it up upon request. The open hot bath in the hotel has both outdoor and indoor pools and not crowded at all. We spent the second day taking the local train in Hakone to visit the various sights which are all very accessible from the train stations. We could find our way around quite easily because of good brochures and maps. Strongly recommend a 2-day trip instead of one day. While Mt Fuji itself is awe inspiring, Hakone offers much more.

The whole trip from start to finish was excellent! Very well organized and extremely informative. Not too rushed considering how much land was covered on the first day. Would have maybe liked a bit more time on Mount Fuji. I was very lucky to have had great weather, so there were great views of and from Mount Fuji. The hotel was very nice, I was in the Lakeside Annex and the restaurant there was very reasonable compared to the other restaurants at the Prince complex. The service was great and food excellent. I loved the Onsen bath experience. The second day, having the Hakone 2 day pass, was brilliant! I am not usually keen on organized tours but this one gave you the best of both worlds, being in a tour the first day and then the freedom to choose what to do on your own the second with free access to local transportation. The trip back to Tokyo in the Shinkansen was a great way to end it and experience such a marvelous train. Top Marks, definitely do this trip in Tokyo!

It was just ok. The weather was rainy and windy, and the cloud cover was thick. We weren't able to see Mt. Fuji at all during our stay in Hakone. We stayed at the Hakone Prince Hotel. I would not recommend it to others. The hotel was old and the room smelled like stale cigarrettes, even though I had requested a non-smoking room. The scenery of Hakone was nice and a good change from the busy Tokyo city. It's a good vacation destination.

Hakone was gorgeous and is definitely a must-go. The hotel was not bad, and we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji while on the Komatage ropeway in Hakone--her first appearance in 12 days! Loved the locale, and the tour guide was adorable. Only caution is not to trust the timings given as they were all shorter than what we experienced. An "8-minute" walk to the train station turned out to be very far away, esp. with luggage, and a "40-min" train ride turned out to be more like an hour. Luckily we gave huge time allowances, so we still managed to catch our Shinkansen back. Also, food in the hotel was ridiculously expensive. The cheapest thing was a 6,000 yen buffet, and there aren't any nearby eateries. So, unless you're willing to take a bus down to Moto-Hakone for your meals, you'll have to make do with the convenience store next to the hotel, which thankfully has interesting Japanese quick micowave meals. Will recommend Viator to friends.

The tour was well organized and very informative. Our guide was knowledgeable of the area and offered great suggestions for activities. The only downside was the hotel and overnight stay. While the view was fabulous, the hotel itself was run down. It felt very Motel 6ish, with worn furnishings and 80's appliances. Also, additional information for the free day should have been available, such as a bus schedule that allowed the Hakone free pass. Considering the cost of the tour, I had higher expectations for these two things. This tour is highly recommended to the traveler who wants a quick introduction to the area and is on a time limit. If the hotel was of higher quality for the money and more information was provided for the free day, this tour could be stellar.

Don't go on a cloudy day. The tour was a lot of bus riding, and not a lot of seeing anything. The second day is on your own, they give you a bunch of maps and a suggested route. Getting to the train station was a hassle at the end of the second day.

A spectacular time, beautiful views of the valleys and of course Mount Fuji. The guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed his dry sense of humor. Stayed at the Hakone Prince Hotel and thought it was wonderful. Very nice rooms, an excellent buffet dinner 50pp and the onsen experience was definitely something not to miss. I only wish we had one more day in the Hakone valley to explore a little more.

Everything is in a rush! From boarding the bus to resort, after which it's our own time. Not bad for the lunch though. Seems like it was only half a day to Mt Fuji, so not really considered a tour as we ventured the other 1.5 days ourselves. Good thing was we had a free pass to ride almost all transport.

It was over an hour trip from the hotel pick-up to tour bus at the station. The ride itself was comfortable. The guide was friendly and generally competent, although he gave a wrong instruction during the cable car ride, and lost 13 of the tour group in the process. By a stroke of luck, the group we were in was not lost only because the cable car warden insisted we had to get out of the carriage at one point. Lunch was very poor and forgettable as the food appeared to have been cooked hours before and were stale and cold. The tour during the day was enjoyable although very rushed and we hardly had any time to do much else, understandably perhaps. Accommodation at Hakone was comfortable, although the hotel staff at the reception were not the most friendliest we have seen. One lady was in fact impatient and rude. Otherwise, we had a good time at the onsen and enjoyed our walk at the hotel's garden, which was beautiful. The tour guide gave us no clue as to what to do with the free Hakone pass the next day, so we were very much left to fend for ourselves. In the end, we decided on visiting the glass museum, which turned out to be the correct choice. Overall, it was a pleasant trip, and Hakone is beautiful and well worth the trip.

The trip was from 7.55am to 4.30pm, practically 8 1/2 hours, only not a 2-day tour. We were without a tour guide on the 2nd day return. You dumped us at the hotel after the 8 1/2 hours tour, especially when we are totally strangers in the city and had to take 3 different buses and 2 different trains to return without our guide. Besides that, my husband had hard time walking after his foot surgery. But your guide Harry was an excellent tour guide. If this was to cut down your expenses, we could have easily paid extra money. I will not repeat such inconsiderate tour program again nor recommend to our friends.

The 1st day was great and we were lucky enough to be able to see Mount Fuji usually it's too clouded in summer. I wouldn't say the 2nd day was really part of the tour, they just dropped us of in the hotel in Hakone, and we had to get around and find the way back on our own. We ended up finding some nice things to see in Hakone, but it's not very easy to get around there, the town is not really aimed for foreign tourists.

There is no assistance in the return trip which is very arduous. Lugging a suitcase even a small one on to at least 3 different buses before getting to the train station. Also I do NOT recommend the hotel in Hakone, a very old property that is seedy. The cable car station is very old and has had no upkeep. The steel girders are covered in rust.

Day one of the trip was great. Pick up was well organized, we got to see Mt Fuji, and the tour guide was good! However, I'd strongly suggest skipping the two day tour and just do the one day tour instead. At the end of the first day, we were literally dumped in our hotel. We were pretty much left to fend for ourselves. There's nothing much to do there at night, so we ended up eating an overpriced dinner and went to bed at 8:00 p.m. For the second day, it was supposed to be "explore Hakone on your own" with the Hakone free pass. Note that the pass is hardly free, it's just a discounted pass which allows you to visit some places of interest in Hakone, which unfortunately were not very interesting at all. Plus, getting around was going to be a hassle. The worst part is that we were automatically booked on the 6:00 p.m. bullet train back to Tokyo, which meant that we were going to be stuck in Hakone for almost the entire day. So, in spite of what our tour guide told us, that our tickets were not valid for any earlier train service, we just made our way to the train station early the next day and somehow found our own way back to Tokyo!
