Kamakura Full-Day Walking Tour with Optional Rickshaw Ride from Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Explore the countryside, temples and shrines outside Tokyo on a full-day walking tour through Kamakura. This fascinating, fully guided excursion takes you to Kamakura's famous Great Buddha and pretty Hase Kannon Temple. You'll also have the option to take a one-hour rickshaw ride or train trip to visit the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine as well as shop for arts and crafts along Komachi Shopping Street.

To begin your full-day walking tour, you'll board local trains to Kamakura and Hase, a suburb within Kamakura, to visit the massive bronze statue of the Great Buddha at Kotokuin Temple. The second largest Buddha statue in Japan, the bronze image measures 37 feet (11.4 meters) and is thought to date back to 1252. You'll then visit the attractive Hase Kannon Temple, with its gilt statue of Kannon. You'll have great views of Hase and the Pacific Ocean from here.

After a Japanese-style lunch at a local restaurant, you have the option of taking an one-hour rickshaw ride or train trip on the Eno-den line to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (select your preference when booking).

Here, you'll take a walk along Wakamiya-Oji, the approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine lined with cherry trees. Features of the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine include a series of red torii gates, an arched bridge, ponds, a huge gingko tree and the colorful Main Hall standing at the top of 62 stone steps.

After walking back to Kamakura Station via Komachi Shopping Street and its art and craft shops, you'll catch a local train on the Yokosuka Line back to Tokyo.

The 3 of us were the only ones on this tour! Yuki was very knowledgeable and flexible. We could not have navigated the trains (2 trains) by ourselves. She explained each site and its significance. The Buddha was amazing, and worth the trip. Other shrines and gardens were also very beautiful and interesting. Lunch was very good. Highly recommend!

The itinery was v.good -interesting places visited & travelling on local trains etc. however the day was spoiled by the.poor English spoken by the guide, I don't know his name as he didn't introduce himself, we were only given basic info about the places visited and he was difficult to understand. He did however take the trouble to make sure that on the return trip to Tokyo we got off the train at the best station for our final destination rather than all go back to Tokyo main station.

Very organized and timely as well. Tour guide guide English was poor, hard to understand, never introduced himself to the group, and way to many temples to see in one day.

Great little tour. There were only 5 of us plus the guide so an intimate little group which made it more fun! the guide was very knowledge and wasn't in our faces at all, she wanted to give us as much time to ourselves as we wanted. the japanese meal was pretty good. all the places we visited on the tour were well worth seeing. there was a fair bit of walking but not too much and had time to relax and enjoy what we saw without charging around. you get the train there and back and it takes about an hour, the guide is with you all the way and gives you the tickets when you need them for trains and entry. i don't usually do tours and it obviously works out cheaper to do it yourself but you risk missing the better places or getting lost and you don't have the same knowledge or insight you receive from a guide. i think it's more relaxing this way as you don't have to think too much either! enjoy.

fantastic tour, we were lucky enough to only be in a party of 4 ppl. the guide was fantastic and she really knows her stuff and looks after for fully from the time you arrive to getting you back to the hotel. i cant praise her enough. the tour itself took in some amazing sights and especially the big buddah and the gardens are stunning. and added bonus was the food, it was really nice and im a fussy eater lol. also seeing the beach was a strange twist. all in all 5 out of 5, makes a change to tokyo for a day

We had a great tour with Yoko. The tour was very informative and we had a lot of free time on our own. After visiting the first Temple, I wished we would have had more free time for shopping as we walked back to the train station. We were not offered a rickshaw ride that was mentioned in the tour description. This tours was really fun and we would have not been able to go to these places on our own.

If you only have a short time in Tokyo, this is a great tour for getting out of the generic big city and seeing more of the "real" Japanese countryside. While you could notionally get yourself there on the train, going with the tour guide made it much easier. She did a wonderful job explaining what we were looking at. Make sure you wear good walking shoes!

Kamakura was recommended to us by another colleague at work and from beginning to end, it proved to be a fantastic trip. Very tranquil, very calm and near the sea too. Witnessed a wedding and naming ceremony of an infant, 2 separate ceremonies at the Shrine which was the icing on the cake. Our guide made every part of our day most enjoyable.

It's a nice place. We couldn't enjoy the sightseeing too much because we were walking under the rain. Kamakura, the temple, shrine and Buddha are worth seeing. The guide was fantastic as well. We highly recommend this tour.

The tour to Kamakura was the highlight of my trip. The sites we visited were very impressive, the village of Kamakura was very pretty and fun to walk around in. The local lunch was excellent and the guide worked very hard to provide us with a lot of information. We even saw several traditional wedding ceremonies at one of the temples. The time was not enough but considering that I had little time in Tokyo, this was a great way of seeing an awful lot in a very short period of time. If I had not taken this tour I doubt that I would have made the 1 hour trip on the train on my own. Well worth it!

Our trip to Kamakura was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and gave us the history behind the sites we were seeing. The town itself was quite a change from the busy streets of Tokyo. The Hase temple is breathtaking, as are the grounds that surround it. The large Buddha was very impressive, but the temple and the shrines were our favorite part. Our tour group was wonderfully eclectic and small enough that we got to know a little bit about everyone. We chose this tour because we did not have time to make it to Kyoto, but wanted to make it out of the city. We are so glad we did.

On this tour, we only had 11 people plus the guide. We took a series of trains to Kamakura. The giant Buddha in Kamakura was worth the whole trip. The Japanese lunch was good. I was the only one of the 11 to take the rickshaw ride, so I felt somewhat embarrassed about taking it. However, it was an interesting ride. Our guide was great.
