Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria Half-Day Trip from Washington DC

Washington D.C., United States of America

Make a half-day pilgrimage to the Mount Vernon, the home of America's founding father, George Washington. Along the way you'll see sights both old and new from the pretty seaport town of Old Town Alexandria to the famous Pentagon in Washington DC.

You will have free time to wander around the area and explore the picturesque farm where Washington and his family lived. Step off the coach and visit: George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens which stretch over 500 open acres (200 hectares) along the scenic Potomac River.

The tour includes views of the quaint seaport town of Old Town Alexandria, Christ Church where Washington worshiped, Fort Washington, the Pentagon and Crystal City.

Because of numbers we had to join another tour. We still got to see Mt Vernon but our time in Old Town Alexandria did not allow for much sightseeing or the promised shopping. But despite that time at Mt Vernon was very good.

The tour was fine up to the time at Alexandria when the bus driver informed us that another bus will be coming to pick up the people on the half day tour. He left 10 people standing by the church hoping a bus will arrive to take us back to Union Station Rather tacky

Amazing place to visit - definitely recommend!! We had about 3 hours at Mt Vernon which was just enough time for the mansion tour, the tomb, the wharf and to see the museum!!

Very interesting tour with great driver/guide. My only disappointment was the the African American special tour was scheduled after our bus left Mr. Vernon.

Great trip, driver (Jesse?) very informative. Only drawback was the heat - I'd love to have seen more of the grounds but it was just so hot :(

The Mount Vernon part is 3 hours and the Alexandria part is 20 minutes. Would have liked to spend more time in Alexandria....there's so much to see there.

We had a delightful time on our trip. The driver/guide was very informative and had suggestions to save us time. He also had our house tour changed to an earlier time so we would not be rushed to catch the bus back.

So worthwhile doing this trip - Mount V is beautiful and you get to see really quaint and picturesque towns and countryside on the way. Were also given tickets in advance so that we could be at the front of the queue going in so we were first to view the house. Would have liked more time in Old Alexandria as this looked a really nice place to explore. This trip could easily be extended to a full day.

They tell you 2 be there 30min before tour, (8.30) so we got there for 7am exchanged voucher, and waited inline for bus, our Bus and guide was bad. we arrived at the Mansion at 9am, but you only have 3 hours if that, before you need to be back at the bus, at 12 noon, allow 1 hour for the house and another for the education centre, and cause you were up so early to be at the bus station, you need to eat, they have a great food court at the education centre. We were then taken to Christ Church, for about 10 minute talk by one of the parish ladies. And then was picked up at 1pm by another bus as both the full day and half day tours take the same bus in the morning. We were back at Union Station at 1.30pm. We would have liked more time at Mount Vernon cause we didn't even see the Gardens or George's Burial Tomb. We felt this tour was very rushed.

definitely would prefer more time at mt. vernon, not much going on in old town alexandria to see also if you're printing tickets on the computer you need to exchange those for real tickets at the bus area (this should be explained on the website as everyone had to go at the last minute to do this)

Fantastic day out. I teamed this trip with the full day to Monticello, and was able to compare the two. Both were great. Bus driver was informative, the estate and house were beautiful, and finished off with a trip round Alexandria. Great way to end a holiday in Washington.

I don't have words to describe my feelings. We loved the trip and fed ourselves in terms of culture and discovering. Like a good educationalist, our guide explained the history of the first president and the capital Washington D.C.. We knew of this before but words combined to lively images talk more. We thank him and all the staff for the good job. I will strongly recommend this trip to friends and relatives.

Trip was great. The brocure advertised 4 hr tour. It accually takes 5 hrs. Had a 200pm appointment almost missed it. You should advertise it as a 5 hr tour to eliminate confusion. Besides that it was great.

Very nice and informative, the bus driver was great. Would have been nice to get out in Old Alexandria and spend a little time downtown. Mount Vernon was excellent. We paid a few dollars more at the guest center to reserve a spot in line for the tour and it was well worth not standing in line for 30-40 minutes. Instead we walked the grounds and were able to see more in that time frame.

This was a real joy - we did not stop in Alexandria, but toured it all in the bus, but Mount Vernon, in lovely weather, was a joy to behold. I can see why George Washington returned here when he ceased to be President.

I took this tour in October so the site was not crowded and the weather was pleasant. Our bus driver advised that we by-pass the 'orientation' and get directly in line to tour the mansion. This was good advice, as our wait was very short. In addition, I visited the tomb of the Washingtons, had lunch at the restaurant try the peanut & chestnut soup for something unusual, and spent the rest of my available time at the education center. I could have spent another hour at least on the exhibits there, which were excellent! Hope to go back someday.

We had a great time at Mt. Vernon. Although, we were told to be back at the bus at 12:30, and the bus driver showed up at 1:15. There were elderly people on the tour, and I was 26 weeks pregnant. It was hot and this is unacceptable business behavior. The tourists should not be waiting for the bus driver, the bus driver should have been there to serve us!

It was a nice trip. The driver was very informative. Getting there early is the key, we just beat the crowds. I would have liked an hour or two more so the pace wasn't so hectic. My only issue was with the lack of clear information on where to go at Union Station and how to check in. Would recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early.

This tour actually starts at 8am and finish at 2pm not 12noon as listed. So you'll get to spend about 4 hours at Mount Vernon and you'll likely need all of that.

The bus tour through Old Town Alexandria was informative. Leaving from Union Station was an added bonus due to the eating and shopping establishments there. However, the time spent at Mt. Vernon was so short that we didn't have time to go inside the mansion! We could have easily spent double the time, because we missed SO much of the grounds and museum. Visiting in October was a great time of year for that tour.
